  • Your Nightclub Bouncer Job Just Got Real in Out of the Box on Xbox One

Your Nightclub Bouncer Job Just Got Real in Out of the Box on Xbox One

Our club is finally open, so get in line and prepare to enjoy Out of The Box on Xbox One!

So, what is Out of The Box? Well, it’s a quirky, cartoonish bouncer simulator. Players not only get to do a bouncer’s job, meeting all sorts of strange characters and getting physical with some of them, they also get to experience a bloody, decision-based narrative with a pinch of dark humor and political incorrectness!

    Out of the Box

    Out of the Box

In Out of The Box, players get to experience the night from the particular perspective of an ex-convict named Warren Baker, who cannot escape from his past. Although he just wants to redeem himself, he can only find a job as the new bouncer of the luxurious club The Box, which belongs to his old Mafia boss. Here, he’ll have to deal with its problematic customers, as well as the ghosts from his former life as a thug.

Out of The Box is our first project as Nuclear Tales, our small development studio located in the Mediterranean city of Elche, Spain. The long journey until its launch started with another artist and myself. We share a special talent that didn’t fit with the working class of the 2000s. We usually met to have some beers and talk about video games, especially the graphic adventures of the 90s. That’s why, in 2010, we decided to start making video games. Our first project: Randal’s Monday, a graphic adventure with a classic approach and many references to pop culture. After launching Randal’s Monday with great success, we decided to create our own company, Nuclear Tales, and start developing with our own brand.

    Out of the Box

    Out of the Box

With Out of The Box we look for deep contrasts and to go beyond the narrative of our previous titles. We want to offer simple, pure entertainment mixed with a slightly challenging gameplay and a deep plot that unravels little by little. This narrative adapts to the decisions players take. We also worked on the clash between a carefree, humorous visual style and a dark, serious story, something along the lines of Tim Shafer’s Full Throttle, one of our main inspirations. The result is a shocking time-management title that swings from the mundane to the extravagant, from funny situations to dramatic instances, and back again.

We believe Out of The Box reflects our society through its main mechanic: managing the queue of the club. In the modern world, prejudices and stereotypes determine our choices. These decisions unconsciously shape our environment, each one serving as lessons about life, about measuring each step we take in this world. The same happens in Out of The Box, when we take rushed assumptions about the guests of The Box and decide prematurely who can and cannot get through its doors. Eventually, these actions will come to haunt us in many forms, some of them leading to unexpected consequences.

    Out of the Box

    Out of the Box

Before starting the development of Out of The Box, we remember the time we met a Spanish influencer named Gonzalo, or Gona as he is known on YouTube. Randal’s Monday was almost finished and we were moving to different gaming events, looking to get the word out about our title. It was at one of these trade events that we met him, a young and nice Spaniard that loved the game from the first moment he played it.

Gona wanted to create a gameplay series about Randal’s Monday for his YouTube channel. At the moment, he had a rather small but very passionate community that enjoyed the game alongside him. He had such a good time that we kept in contact, which eventually led to us illustrating his books. That’s why we decided to include him as a guest character in Out of The Box! We would love to generate this kind of relationship with our players, this time with Out of The Box.

  • Report: Players Who Create 'Inappropriate' Custom Characters In Soulcalibur VI Now Risk A Ban

Report: Players Who Create 'Inappropriate' Custom Characters In Soulcalibur VI Now Risk A Ban

Soulcalibur VI features a fairly robust create-a-character mode. It also lets you take any character you create into the online competitive modes, including ranked. You can see how that might cause issues from a mile away, but Bandai Namco looks to be on the case.

According to a translated message on the official Soulcalibur VI Japanese website, players who make “inappropriate characters” now risk having their accounts banned from online play.

The exact definition of “inappropriate” is somewhat vague. There are plenty of characters loaded with mundane objects that, when put together, create obscene imagery, but also characters who obscure the entire screen, change the hitboxes of certain attacks, or take one character swap it out for another in an attempt to confuse opponents in ranked matches. We’ve reached out to Bandai Namco to clarify and will update this article should they reply.

For now, check out our review of Soulcalibur VI, as well as some of the wackier creations you may no longer get too see online.

I think the best fix for this issue is to simply ban custom characters in ranked, then just leave the player lobbies as is. When people are trying to grind ranking points to prove themselves, it can frustrating to run into a character meant to throw others off or troll them. But if people want to battle giant cubes for hours and hours in a one-off lobby, let them.

  • Battlefield V Will Have A Virtual Currency For Cosmetics Implemented After Launch

Battlefield V Will Have A Virtual Currency For Cosmetics Implemented After Launch

With Battlefield V being the first major game from DICE after last year’s Star Wars: Battlefront II upended the table on multiplayer FPS microtransactions, the studio has been cautious with both how they approach and how they discuss the revenue model with Battlefield V. Today, DICE and EA explained how it will work, and seem to at least be trying to avoid the pay-to-win reputation that dogged Battlefront II.

Battlefield V will have two currency options: Company coin and Battlefield currency. Company coin is earned in-game through daily missions, career rank progression, and live events. You use company coin to purchase new equipment, skins, and general gear, as well as new skill upgrades and cosmetics. The plainly named Battlefield currency, which is purchased with real money, can only be spent on cosmetics.

To put it simply, everything can be bought using in-game money, but you can shortcut your way to cosmetics by spending real money.

Moreover, Battlefield currency will not be available at launch, though cosmetics themselves will. The choice mirrors EA’s decision to turn off Battlefront II’s ability to buy virtual currency until a few months later, though DICE explains that they want players to have hands-on time with the game before allowing currency to be sold. It is possible that the studio plans to launch it alongside the now-delayed Battle Royale mode coming in March.

DICE used the post to reconfirm their commitment to making sure nothing purchasable within Battlefield V unbalances the game, an important note for players worried about a pay-to-win model rearing an ugly head over this year’s title.

Battlefield V releases on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on November 20.

I would rather they not have the virtual currency at all, honestly. While I am glad they are limiting it to cosmetics, the addition of live events makes me suspect some cosmetics are going to be time-limited to encourage just paying the money to get it. That said, maybe that’s still a better situation than random lootbox drops that also cost money.

  • Undertale Creator To Reveal Something New Tomorrow

Undertale Creator To Reveal Something New Tomorrow

Undertale creator Toby Fox is teasing something new regarding Undertale, though whether it’s a sequel or an update isn’t quite clear.

Whatever it is, however, it looks to be pretty major. The official Undertale Twitter account this morning posted several vague tweets, seemingly in in character, saying it wants “To show you something,” and that it will make contact again in 24 hours. It also mentions that whatever it’s going to reveal “is far from complete,” however, and that it will take questions from the community and use the feedback to complete it.

Fox is also encouraging PC and Mac players who’ve finished the game to play it early tomorrow morning. “I want to make something new, and it all begins with your feedback,” Fox said.

For more on Undertale, check out Daniel Tack’s glowing review from 2015

Considering this is all hinting towards “something new,” it’s likely we’re looking at a new game from Fox and/or possibly a sequel to Undertale. However, the statements about asking for community feedback also seem to hint toward an early access or crowdfunding approach to the game. While Undertale has sold quite well, it may be Fox wants to keep the grassroots spirit of the development process that birthed Undertale alive rather than directly publish or work with a publisher on a sequel. Either way, I can’t wait to see what this is. Unfortunately, I think I lost my Undertale save at some point, which means I won’t be able to see the reveal as intended.
