  • Nintendo Shuts Down "No Mario's Sky," But the Game Still Lives on Kind of

Nintendo Shuts Down "No Mario's Sky," But the Game Still Lives on Kind of

Nintendo has apparently issued a copyright claim that has forced the developer’s of “No Mario’s Sky” to take the Mario/No Man’s Sky game down. Developer ASMB Games wrote on its website that “No Mario’s Sky is no more-io!” This was probably always going to happen, considering the game’s use of the Nintendo IP.

“Thanks everyone for playing and enjoying our little fan game,” the studio said. “We would love to see an official Nintendo game in this style–a Mario Galaxy-style game in 2D within a procedurally-generated universe.”

While No Mario’s Sky is gone, it’s been replaced by what ASMB is calling “DMCA’s Sky.” It’s similar to No Mario’s Sky, but uses a character named Spaceman Finn instead of Mario who is searching for Princess Mango, not Princess Peach.

“Featuring crazy Moombas, An Infinite Universe, Muscle, Amazing Physics and a Radical Space Ship; DMCA’s Sky is the hackneyed remake-gone-mashup you’ve been craving,” the studio said.

You can download it here. As always, be careful when downloading anything from the internet.

No Mario’s Sky removal was basically inevitable. It’s also not the first fan-made Mario game that Nintendo has shut down. Two fan-made games, Pokemon Uranium and the Metroid 2 Remake, were recently taken down. Pokemon Uranium’s creators say they weren’t contacted by Nintendo’s lawyers and instead took it down out of respect for the right’s holders. The Metroid 2 remake, however, was issued a DMCA takedown notice by the Mario publisher.

Nintendo also had the Super Mario 64 HD fan project shut down. The project was a remake of the N64 game’s first level, Bob-omb Battlefield, built in Unity.

Halo 5 Getting Custom Game Browser on Xbox One and PC

Microsoft continues to add new features to Halo 5: Guardians. Developer 343 Industries has now confirmed that the game is getting a custom game browser on both Xbox One and PC.

343’s Frank O’Connor confirmed this on NeoGAF, possibly accidentally. When discussing Halo 5’s PC Forge tools, he said, “Once the custom game browser is available I think the community might get crazy legit.”

Studio head Josh Holmes added some further details, stating this is a feature that 343 has wanted to make “for years.”

“To be clear, it’s a new feature that will provide similar functionality to a custom game browser, extending the existing file browser,” he said, as reported by VG247. “It’s something we’ve wanted to build for years and managed to get done as part of our ongoing support for the game.

“We’ll be talking in more detail as we near release, but yeah it’s pretty megaton for Halo and will be a great addition on both PC and console,” he added.

Halo 5’s Forge tools and custom games support come to PC on September 8, which is also the day that the game’s newest expansion, Anvil’s Legacy, comes to Xbox One. The game’s file browser also arrives on both systems that day. There is no word yet on when the custom games browser will be available.

  • Marvel's Ghost Rider Revealed in New Agents of SHIELD Image

Marvel's Ghost Rider Revealed in New Agents of SHIELD Image

Ghost Rider is one of Marvel’s coolest characters, but many fans would argue that the two critically-maligned movies starring Nicolas Cage didn’t exactly do him justice. This might be about to change when the supernatural anti-hero makes his Marvel TV debut in Agents of SHIELD this month. The first image of actor Gabriel Luna as the character has been released–check it out below, via EW:

    3125013-shieldqefw.jpg

This version of Ghost Rider is Robbie Reyes, who has been his alter ego since 2014. Unlike Agents of SHIELD, the two earlier movies were not part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and focused on Johnny Blaze, the ‘classic’ Ghost Rider.

In addition to the image, the show’s official Twitter feed released a short ‘found footage’ style video that reveals that Ghost Rider will be driving the cool black car associated with Reyes, as opposed to Blaze’s motorcycle. Watch it here.

At San Diego Comic-Con in July, Marvel TV boss Jeph Loeb spoke about the decision to introduce Ghost Rider in Agents of SHIELD‘s fourth season. “The Marvel catalogue is filled with all kinds of really interesting, new, and often weird things,” he said, via ComicBookMovie.com. “So we hit on Ghost Rider and in particular the character of Robbie Reyes, because our show really hinges on the idea of family and how that works in the world.

“Robbie and his relationship with [his brother] Gabe and his relationship with the Ghost Rider are all really interesting things for our SHIELD folks to encounter, possibly in negative ways.”

Agents of SHIELD season 4 premieres on ABC on September 20, 2016.

  • Unreleased Nintendo 64 Game 'Rev Limit' Discovered

Unreleased Nintendo 64 Game 'Rev Limit' Discovered

    IMG 5117

Seta’s Rev Limit was shaping up to be one of the Nintendo 64’s most promising racing games when it was hyped during the early days of the console’s lifespan. Shots of the work-in-progress racer hinted at a real-world driving title with some impressive real-time lighting effects, variable weather conditions and a wide range of vehicles based on real marques. The game underwent several redesigns during its development and was even rumoured to have been switched from the N64 base system to a launch title for the infamous 64DD at one point. Sadly, Seta ran into financial troubles in the late 1990s and the game was quietly cancelled and considered lost…until now.

    IMG 5116

According to this thread at the Assembler Games forum, this forgotten Nintendo 64 racer recently surfaced in a Yahoo Auctions lot and was snapped up by Japanese gamer and YouTuber RetroGameTV, who then shared the images on Twitter. The cartridge itself came with an N64 development unit and is a typical elongated prototype model that many pre-production games were tested on. The cartridge is unmarked except for a sticker with the code ‘NUS-16F32S’ and ‘128M + 256K’ which hints at the capacity, and it is believed that the buyer did not know what was on the cart until he tested it himself. Prior to this discovery, it wasn’t known how much of Rev Limit had been completed before it was canned, and it was speculated that a version of the game could have been finished (but similarly unreleased) for the Aleck 64 arcade board. While this may sound unbelievable, it becomes a slightly more feasible prospect when you consider that the Aleck 64 was based on the Nintendo 64 hardware and was co-developed by Seta and Nintendo. Another interesting detail about this find is the date shown on the title screen  – 1999. The game was thought to have been cancelled by 1998 (after numerous delays) so this later date hints that Rev Limit could have continued to languish in development hell for a lot longer than originally thought.

    IMG 5115

While the Nintendo 64 did play host to a number of great non-kart racers such as Ridge Racer 64, World Driver Championship and Roadsters, Rev Limit could have been another great addition to the library. At the time of writing, RetroGameTV has not released any new footage of Rev Limit running, but we have reached out to ask if he is willing to share further details on this fascinating discovery. It would be amazing if Rev Limit was dumped online so that nostalgic Nintendo 64 owners could finally sample the racing game that never was, but so far all we have are these (admittedly brilliant) images.
