I warped into a new sector. I was immediately wowed by the pink and orange starscape ahead of me. It was like a cotton-candy sunset that spanned further than my puny ape brain could comprehend. Then ten ships converged on me, and I exploded.

“The ocean is a friend of mine.” Disney has debuted the full trailer for the musical Moana, to follow-up the extended teaser that arrived during the Olympics. This musical is the latest from Disney Animation and co-directors Ron Clements and John Musker (of The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Hercules, The Princess and the Frog) and is an adventure about a kick ass Hawaiian princess named Moana. We also get a better look at the big villain, the Lava Witch, in this new trailer. Auli’i Cravalho voices Moana, and the the cast includes Dwayne Johnson, Alan Tudyk, Phillipa Soo, Temuera Morrison and Jemaine Clement. This looks like it might actually be really quite wonderful, Disney is back at the top of their game. Have fun. ›››

“Before man makes it to Mars, he must conquer the Arctic.” IFC Films & Sundance Selects have debuted a trailer for a film called Passage to Mars, an experimental doc with narration by Zachary Quinto retelling some of the stories from the crew on NASA’s Arctic expedition. As a test to see if astronauts could survive on Mars, NASA sent a team of six people on a 2,000-mile journey up into the Northwest Passage in the Arctic – this film recounts their voyage. “As an expedition that was supposed to take weeks stretches into a two-year odyssey, the crew must overcome seemingly insurmountable challenges and life-threatening conditions if they hope to realize their dreams of someday reaching the Red Planet.” James Cameron even loved this film. ›››

“This is kung fu. It’s not a game. It is not a religion. It’s about who lives, and who dies.” Wow – martial arts fans need to take a look at this. The first full 3-minute promo trailer has debuted for a film called Birth of the Dragon, a fictional feature based on the true story of the legendary Bruce Lee. Directed by the guy who made The Adjustment Bureau, the film stars Philip Ng as a cocky, young Bruce Lee living in San Francisco training and teaching his kung fu skills to others. He is confronted by a legendary Shaolin monk named Wong Jack Man, played by Yu Xia, who is upset that he is sullying the art and spirituality of kung fu. This trailer pretty much goes through most of the story, including the token white dude who is a part of the story, played by Billy Magnussen. This looks like it has some fairly kick ass fights and will be inspiring to watch. ›››

“It’s becoming harder and harder to kill ’em.” Discovery Channel has debuted the first official trailer for Morgan Spurlock’s latest documentary titled Rats, and it is indeed about rats, the creepy little (or actually pretty big) vermin that live under our streets, eating our garbage, spreading disease. The doc is premiering in the Midnight Madness section of the Toronto Film Festival this week, which is perfect for this kind of film. While it’s based on the book about rats in New York City, Spurlock’s doc examines the history of rat infestations in major cities throughout the world. I’m a big fan of Spurlock and his documentaries, and this looks like it’s going to be freaky and fun. Thankfully as viewers we won’t have to get anywhere near any rats, but be prepared there are some seriously disgusting shots in this. But I still want to see it – looks fascinating. ›››

The true story of a young Indian boy separated from his impoverished family only to reunite with them 20 years later is told in the emotional new film Lion, directed by Australian filmmaker Garth Davis (“Top of the Lake”), a tale full of heart and perseverance. Some will perhaps find it easy to compare this to Slumdog Millionaire, another fairly recent (and popular) film about an Indian boy beating the odds to make his way back home, but they are both very different adventures. Instead of the fast-paced Slumdog approach, Lion has a more quiet and subtle style in mind. The film begins in 1986 following five year old Saroo Brierley (played by Sunny Pawar) as he struggles to help his mother and older brother make ends meet. ›››

“Happiness is inside of all of us, sometimes you just need someone to help you find it.” DreamWorks Anim has released a new full-length trailer for their next movie, Trolls, in theaters starting this November. While this is based on the funky little toys you used to collect as kids, it’s also a musical about finding happiness and your “true colors”. Featuring original music from Justin Timberlake, the film stars the voice talent of Anna Kendrick, Zooey Deschanel, Russell Brand, James Corden, Kunal Nayyar, Ron Funches, Icona Pop, Gwen Stefani and many more. This new trailer briefly goes behind-the-scenes with some shots of Kendrick and Timberlake talking about music and bringing this story to life. This looks quite lovely. ›››
