The nominees for the 23rd Screen Actors Guild Awards have been announced today, putting awards season in full swing before along with the Global Globe nominations earlier this week. The Screen Actors Guild Awards are unique in that it’s the actors themselves choose the best performances from amongst their peers. Last year’s big winners were Leonardo DiCaprio for The Revenant and Brie Larson for Room. This year they’ve selected a very impressive set of notable films – including Moonlight, Hidden Figures, Fences, Manchester by the Sea, La La Land, plus a nice surprise appearance by Captain Fantastic in two categories. ›››

“Dance fight!” Universal has released the first full theatrical trailer for Illumination Entertainment’s next sequel to Despicable Me, titled just Despicable Me 3 for now. The story brings back Gru (and his minions) for another misadventure, this time involving his long lost twin brother Dru (who is also voiced by Steve Carell) not seen in this trailer. The full voice cast includes Kristen Wiig back at his side as Lucy Wilde, along with Miranda Cosgrove, Russell Brand, Michael Beattie, Dana Gaier and “South Park’s” Trey Parker as the new stuck-in-the-80s villain Balthazar Bratt. Nabbing Parker for a voice is the only thing that interests me about this. They show quite a bit of footage in the trailer, and it looks as amusing as expected. ›››

“The event that shaped our world.” Epic. Warner Bros has unveiled a full theatrical trailer for Christopher Nolan’s WWII action thriller Dunkirk, about the Dunkirk evacuation in 1940. This trailer is also playing in front of Rogue One, with the prologue in IMAX theaters. Starring Mark Rylance, Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy, Kenneth Branagh, James D’Arcy, Harry Styles, Aneurin Barnard, Jack Lowden, and Adam Long. When Allied soldiers from Belgium, Britain and France were surrounded by the German army during a fierce battle in France at the start of WWII, they had to evacuate by boat across the English channel. Finally we get some real footage and holy hell does this film look incredible (but of course it does). ›››

“How well do you really know Julia?” Warner Bros has released the trailer for a romantic thriller titled Unforgettable, about a woman who sets out to make life hell for her ex-husband’s new wife. The man-in-the-middle is played by Geoff Stults, and the two women are played by Katherine Heigl (with some seriously wicked blonde hair that makes her look like Monica Bellucci) and Rosario Dawson. The film is also a reunion for Heigl and Di Novi, who previously collaborated on Life as We Know It. The main cast also includes young actress Isabella Rice, Simon Kassianides, Whitney Cummings, Robert Wisdom and Cheryl Ladd. From the description, this seems like a comedy but it’s actually a crazy twisted thriller. ›››

“What you end up remembering isn’t always what you actually witnessed…” CBS Films has revealed a trailer for a film titled The Sense of an Ending, an adaptation of the novel by Julian Barnes. The movie stars Jim Broadbent as Tony Webster, a man who becomes haunted by his past and is presented with a mysterious legacy that causes him to re-think his life. He receives a letter that makes him look back at one of his early relationships. The cast includes Charlotte Rampling, Michelle Dockery, Emily Mortimer, Harriet Walter, Joe Alwyn, Freya Mavor, and Billy Howle. I’m a big fan of director Ritesh Batra, who directed The Lunchbox, and this is his next film. It looks like it builds to something very powerful at the end. ›››

“What more can I man donate then his child?” IFC Films has debuted an official US trailer for the WWII drama Alone in Berlin, which premiered at Berlinale this year. Brendan Gleeson stars as Otto Quangel in this true story about a husband & wife who planted anti-Nazi notes around Berlin as a form of resistance and retaliation against the evil in the country at the time. The film is titled Jeder stirbt für sich allein in German – which translates to Everyone Dies Alone, a more sad title for how it plays out. The cast includes Emma Thompson, Daniel Brühl, Mikael Persbrandt and Katharina Schüttler. I love Otto’s ideas, but this film just isn’t very good, and I wish it was better (read my festival review). It’s worth a look anyway. ›››

Directed by Gareth Edwards (of Monsters and Godzilla), Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is the first in a new series of Star Wars standalone films. Written by Chris Weitz and Tony Gilroy, from a story by John Knoll and Gary Whitta, this is inspired by the opening crawl in George Lucas’ original 1977 film:
“It is a period of civil war. Rebel spaceships, striking from a hidden base, have won their first victory against the evil Galactic Empire. During the battle, Rebel spies managed to steal secret plans to the Empire’s ultimate weapon, the DEATH STAR, an armored space station with enough power to destroy an entire planet. Pursued by the Empire’s sinister agents, Princess Leia races home aboard her starship, custodian of the stolen plans that can save her people and restore freedom to the galaxy…” ›››
