In 2016, esports experienced even more highs and lows than the previous year. That’s what it means to be growing. But while the industry surrounding competitive gaming continues to expand on the backs of enthusiastic investors and hype-men, it’s important not to forget why anyone actually watches it in the first place: the people playing are really damn good.
It’s an age-old question: what exactly was going on when you laid waste to cartoon ducks with the Nintendo Zapper? The 8-Bit Guy is here to exhaustively explain exactly how this beautiful little accessory worked its magic.
I don’t advocate taking the law into your own hands, but I love watching other people do it on the internet. After some goober on a scooter steals a trucker’s phone, the dude goes full-on Jackie Chan to enact some swift street justice.
“My understanding is we’ve got a bit of a situation…” A trailer has debuted for a film titled Stray Bullets, from young filmmaker Jack Fessenden, son of Larry Fessenden. Not to be confused with the comic book series Stray Bullets, this crime thriller is about two teenaged boys who end up in a fight against a hitman while being held hostage by three criminals they discover hiding out in their father’s old mobile home. Jack Fessenden stars along with Asa Spurlock, including James Le Gros, John Speredakos, and Kevin Corrigan, with an appearance by Larry Fessenden. This looks solid, better than expected for a first film. ›››
On this the last day of 2016, Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima has reflected on the year that was.
Writing on Twitter, Kojima thanked fans for their support in the year that his new studio got off the ground. “Everything was from zero except your warmest support,” he said on the social media site.
1/2 Year 2016 for me was the prep year for the new journey. Everything was from zero start except your warmest support. pic.twitter.com/ubWH1FlBMC
2/2 I could done only because there’s a hope. Thank you. Have a good new year for everyone who dreams, who supports the dream to come true. pic.twitter.com/QYkr9vFbTG
Disney’s animated classic Beauty and the Beast featured more than a few memorable songs, including “Something There.” Now, the first audio clip of Belle actress Emma Watson singing the song for next year’s live-action version has arrived for you to listen to.
Here’s the wonderful snippet of the track, as shared by Beauty and the Beast producer Jack Morrissey (via Entertainment Weekly):
Beauty and the Beast comes to theaters on March 17, 2017. Disney has described the film as a “re-telling” of the 1991 animated classic, tailored for a “contemporary audience.” It will stay true to the original music, while adding some new tunes as well.
Watson plays Belle, while Dan Stevens portrays Beast. Luke Evans plays Gaston, alongside Josh Gad as LeFou. The new Beauty and the Beast also features CG versions of Lumiere (Ewan McGregor), Cogsworth (Ian McKellan), and Mrs. Potts (Emma Thompson), Kevin Kline plays Belle’s father, Maurice.
The movie is directed by Bill Condon, who was behind the camera for the final two Twilight movies. You can see nine images from the film here or in the gallery below.
Beauty and the Beast is not the first live-action take on a classic Disney movie, as the company released Maleficent and The Jungle Book in recent years. Disney is also developing live-action versions of Snow White, Mulan, The Lion King, and Aladdin, while a second Jungle Book is also on the way.
Now through January 3, developer Niantic is releasing Bronze, Silver, and Gold boxes into the game; they include things like incense, lure modules, lucky eggs, Poke Balls, and Great Balls. These replace the previous freebies, including Special, Great, and Ultra boxes that were available December 25-30.
Additionally, now until January 8, Pokemon Go’s first partner Pokemon and their evolutions will show up more frequently in the game. These Pokemon include Bulbasaur, Ivysaur, Venusaur, Charmander, Charmeleon, Charizard, Squirtle, Wartortle, and Blastoise. Further, the game’s lure modules will run for 60 minutes instead of the normal 30 for the duration of the event (via DualShockers).
Pokemon Go is far from the only game celebrating the holidays–read GameSpot’s roundup here to see how other games are getting in the holiday spirit.
