You have to hand it to Sonic fans – they don’t do anything by halves. Even less so when it comes to making their own games based on the Blue Blur’s escapades fighting Dr Robotnik/Eggman or whatever his name is these days. Unlike Nintendo, which seems hell-bent on crushing anything that even remotley resembles an homage to any of its intellectual property, Sega seems more than happy to allow Sonic-based fan games to flourish and the latest offering is Sonic Time Twisted.

Coming from Overbound Game Studio, Sonic Time Twisted has been in development for 12 years and is now finally available to download and play for free. The game appears to take elements from many of the major 2D Sonic games, including a Sonic sprite similar to that seen in Sonic 3 and pseudo 3D bonus stages, and mixes them together with a Sonic CD style time travel mechanic. Featuring 28 acts across 8 original zones, and appearances from plenty of the series’ main characters, Sonic Time Twisted could be the perfect stop gap while fans wait for Sonic Mania.

Sonic Time Twisted is available as a free download for Windows, and below you’ll find the official launch trailer for this wholly unofficial Sonic offering.
