  • David Goyer and SyFy Make ‘Krypton’ Origin Story Series Official

David Goyer and SyFy Make ‘Krypton’ Origin Story Series Official

    Krypton TV show

Krypton may be gone, but it is never forgotten. Sometimes it can even be resurrected. Just about six weeks ago word leaked out that David Goyer is developing a Krypton TV show to act as a sort of Superman prequel. That rumor has now been verified, as Goyer and SyFy have announced the development of (wait for it) Krypton, a show written by Ian Goldberg (Once Upon a Time, FlashForward), who cracked the story with Goyer. The two will exec produce the series, which plans to follow members of the El family a generation before it gave birth to Kal-El.

    THR says,

Krypton takes place years before the Superman legend we know, when the House of El was shamed and ostracized. This drama, which is in development, follows the Man of Steel’s grandfather as he brings hope and equality to Krypton, turning a planet in disarray into one worthy of giving birth to the greatest Super Hero ever known.

The show is produced by Warner Bros. Television and DC Entertainment, and continues the trend of spreading DC shows around to various networks and cable channels. It is also part of SyFy’s push to get back to serious sci- fi, as also seen with shows like Dominion, Ascension, 12 Monkeys.

That’s all we’ve got at the moment. Clearly there are decades of Krypton stories from which the show might draw, and one advantage of doing this as a TV series disconnected from any other portrayal of the DC Universe is that it does not have to be beholden to ideas seen in Man of Steel, or any other Superman movie or TV series.

  • Natalie Portman Passes on Aaron Sorkin/Danny Boyle Steve Jobs Movie

Natalie Portman Passes on Aaron Sorkin/Danny Boyle Steve Jobs Movie

Natalie Portman as Jane Foster in Thor The Dark World

UPDATE: Variety reported on December 8 that Portman passed on this role. It is thought that Portman (and Jessica Chastain before her) was actually up for the role of Joanna Hoffman, who was part of the original Apple Macintosh dev team, and for a while the only marketing person working on the Macintosh. Additionally, we’ve heard that one bit of info in the “three product launches” structure is wrong, and that it is actually the original iMac launch seen in the script, and not the iPod launch.

In a recent interview, screenwriter Aaron Sorkin said that one of Steve Jobs’ daughters, Lisa Nicole Brennan-Jobs, was the “heroine” of the film he scripted about Jobs’ life.

In the case of Steve Jobs, it’s the relationships he had – particularly with his daughter, Lisa – that drew me to it. She didn’t participate in Walter Isaacson’s book, because her father was alive at the time, and she didn’t want to alienate either of her parents, so I was very grateful that she was willing to spend time with me. She is the heroine of the movie.

We know that Danny Boyle is directing the film and that Michael Fassbender will play the lead. With that quote in mind, we now have a pretty good idea who will be playing that role. Natalie Portman is reportedly in talks to join the film. Read more about the Natalie Portman Steve Jobs casting below.

Deadline broke the news of Portman being in talks for the film and though they don’t connect her to a specific role, the 33-year-old actress is right in the same age range as Jobs’ daughter, who is currently 36. Plus, if an Oscar-winner like Portman is coming on board, it’s probably for a significant role. Sorkin says Lisa is the heroine of this movie, they’re the same age and kind of look alike so this seems to fit. It’s unconfirmed, but an educated guess.

The Sorkin-scripted, Boyle-directed film has had some trouble of late. The original studio, Sony, let the project go and Universal quickly scooped it up. It’s odd for a potential prestige project like this to get that treatment, suggesting issues of some kind with the production. We don’t know for certain what caused Sony to drop the film, but it now has a home. With Portman potentially joining up along with Fassbender and Seth Rogen, who is attached to play Steve Wozniak, they’ve got a formidable cast and crew.

A few months back, Jessica Chastain was said to be in talks for the role and you’d imagine it was the same one Portman is currently looking at. They could be different characters, that’s unclear, but it’s worth noting.

Do you think Portman would work as Jobs’ daughter?

  • Which Major DC Character Is Already Dead in ‘Batman v Superman’?

Which Major DC Character Is Already Dead in ‘Batman v Superman’?

Batman v Superman Dawn of Justice

Production just ended on Zack Snyder‘s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, but the spoilers are already coming faster than a speeding bullet. We’ve been hearing rumored plot points including some major villains, some of the Justice League heroes and much more.

Now comes another potential plot point that’s not exactly a spoiler because it’s about a character who isn’t in the movie at all. This is an important character in the world of the film’s heroes, one you probably expected to be in the film, but apparently is not. Apparently, this character is already dead.

What does this missing character mean for the remainder of the DC Cinematic Universe? Possibly a lot. Read more about the pre-Batman v Superman death below.

Once again, the news comes from Badass Digest, which apparently has some very good sources on this production. If you want to avoid spoilers – (which again, this just barely counts) – stop reading here.

According to Badass, Commissioner Gordon is dead at the start of Batman v Superman. Here’s the quote:

In this continuity James Gordon has, at some point in the past, bitten the dust. How and at whose hands I cannot tell you – all that’s noted in the script is that there’s a memorial plaque to James Gordon. This explains why the role wasn’t cast for the film, at least.

So that raises a bunch of questions. Will the eventual Batman movies move ahead without Gordon? It’s possible he’s dead like he is in The Dark Knight, which means not at all. Or they just didn’t want to confuse the issue with Gotham on TV and this film in theaters. Though, to be fair, Gotham may not even be on the air come March 2016.

Since this movie will have characters like Aquaman, Wonder Woman, and Cyborg, it’s safe to say Ben Affleck’s Batman will be in Justice League Part 1 and 2. But does a dead Gordon hint we may get solo Batman films set BEFORE the events of Batman v Superman? It doesn’t seem likely, but this opens the door. Batman and Commissoner Gordon are, in a way, symbiotic characters.

Odds are this is just a way to sort of build Batman into a more seasoned veteran crime fighter. Apparently, we see a flashback in which his parents die early in this film (this is the scene where fans saw IMAX cameras on set) and if he’s lost Commissioner Gordon as well, that’s just one less person he can truly trust.

If you want more details on Batman v Superman, head to the Badass Digest link above. The site says Batman has been around 17 years at this point, some more about Alfred’s relationship with Bruce Wayne, even the potential fate of Robin.

What are your thoughts on the Commission Gordon Batman v Superman death news?

  • ‘Still Alice’ Trailer: Here’s the Film Getting Julianne Moore All That Oscar Buzz

‘Still Alice’ Trailer: Here’s the Film Getting Julianne Moore All That Oscar Buzz

    Julianne Moore in Still Alice

With just three weeks to go until the end of the year, we’ve still got several noteworthy pictures to look forward to. Among them is Still Alice, an indie drama that emerged as one of the brightest gems from this year’s TIFF crop.

Julianne Moore leads as Alice Howland, a professor and married mother of three who is diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s Disease. Alec Baldwin plays her husband, and Kristen Stewart, Kate Bosworth, and Hunter Parrish play her children. Hit the jump to watch the new Still Alice trailer.

Yahoo debuted the Still Alice trailer.

Moore got some of the best reviews of her career for Still Alice at TIFF, which is saying a lot seeing as she’s Julianne Freaking Moore. She’s considered a likely Best Actress Oscar nominee by critics who’ve already seen the movie, though she’ll have stiff competition from the likes of Rosamund Pike (Gone Girl) and Reese Witherspoon (Wild).

The premise has the potential to get saccharine or melodramatic, but based on the trailer it looks like Moore keeps it grounded. Her confusion and heartbreak are almost palpable, but Moore doesn’t oversell it. Nor does she appear to fall into the trap of playing the disability instead of the character.

Still Alice premieres January 16, 2015, though if you’re in New York or LA you may be able to catch it right now — it’s currently in the middle of its Oscar-qualifying limited run in those territories. Wash Westmoreland and Richard Glatzer wrote and directed the film based on the book by Lisa Genova.

Alice Howland, happily married with three grown children, is a renowned linguistics professor who starts to forget words. When she receives a diagnosis of Early-Onset Alzheimer’s Disease, Alice and her family find their bonds thoroughly tested. Her struggle to stay connected to who she once was is frightening, heartbreaking, and inspiring.

  • Xbox Exec Responds to Street Fighter 5 PS4 Exclusivity

Xbox Exec Responds to Street Fighter 5 PS4 Exclusivity

Xbox gaming executive Phil Spencer has responded to the announcement that Capcom’s fighting game Street Fighter V is coming exclusively to PlayStation 4 for its console release.

He says on Twitter that Microsoft can’t win every business deal, and that he’d rather invest in Killer Instinct, Microsoft’s own fighting game franchise.

“Business deals happen,” he explained to a fan. “We won’t do all of them. When we have a 1st party franchise in a genre I’d rather invest in ours.”

Spencer added that, while Microsoft will make exclusive business deals from time to time–Dead Rising 3 and Rise of the Tomb Raider are two examples–the company also sees owning IP as of paramount importance.

“There is a mix of deals to do,” he said. “But making sure we own IP [that] Xbox gamers love is critical [in my opinion].”

After a trailer for the game arrived ahead of schedule, Street Fighter V was officially announced on December 6 during Sony’s PlayStation Experience event in Las Vegas. The game, which is also coming to PC, will support cross-platform play between PS4 and PC. Capcom has not announced a release date.

  • 20th Anniversary PS4 Sells for $20,000

Some gamers who were able to buy a 20th Anniversary PS4 before the limited-edition systems sold out almost immediately are turning to eBay to sell the commemorative console.

The online auction site features numerous listings for the rare PS4 system, which as was announced last week, and went on sale the evening of December 6 during PlayStation Experience.

Sony manufactured just 12,300 of the consoles, with each unit individually numbered.

Given that the consoles are officially sold out, bidding is trending well above the system’s standard $500 asking price. One 20th Anniversary PS4 sold for $20,100, while another went for $15,100. You can see all the eBay listings here.

The 20th Anniversary PS4 is modelled after the Original PlayStation, which went on sale in Japan on December 3, 1994. Check out GameSpot’s unboxing video above to learn more.

  • Threes Wins Apple Game of the Year

Threes, the acclaimed card puzzle game developed by indie studio Sirvo, has been awarded Game of the Year by Apple.

The game, which tasks players by matching cards of the same number, shipped in February and has accumulated a score of 92 on Metacritic. Apple said Threes was “one of the finest number puzzlers we’ve ever played, this little gem is big on charm and clever concepts.”

It added: “Immensely thoughtful design makes Threes instantly appealing and nearly impossible to put down”.

Platformer Leo’s Fortune took runner-up, while Apple also gave honourable mentions to Monument Valley, Hitman GO, Ruzzle Adventure, Battleheart Legacy, and XCOM: Enemy Within.

Blizzard’s card title Hearthstone, which was nominated for overall Game of the Year at the inaugural Game Awards show on Friday, did not feature in the list.

Meanwhile, in a separate rundown of the most popular apps of 2014, Mojang’s Minecraft finished first in the paid category. Top grossing honours go to Candy Crush Saga on iPhone and Clash of Clans on iPad.

  • Destiny's Dark Below DLC Locking Out Some PS4 Players

Destiny's Dark Below DLC Locking Out Some PS4 Players

Some Destiny players who purchased The Dark Below DLC have discovered that they can no longer access the base game.

According to several online discussion threads (here and here on Reddit), once players purchase The Dark Below DLC, they are presented with a countdown timer for the downloadable content’s release.

However, some players cannot get past the countdown timer. It appears this only affects users who download a digital version of the game on PS4, and then go on to purchase the DLC standalone (as in, not as part of a season pass purchase).

The Dark Below is Bungie’s first Destiny expansion, which is set for a release on December 9. That launch date likely means that the countdown block will resolve itself in a day (but this isn’t guaranteed).

Some Reddit users have suggested a workaround might be possible if players delete and re-download the game file. However, it has not been confirmed that this method works.

The issue was complicated further because the PlayStation Network went down overnight, meaning some users have experienced problems downloading the game file.

Priced at $20 / £20, Bungie’s The Dark Below includes:

    • New weapons, armour, and gear to further customise your Guardian
    • The ability to increase your Light level to 32, and five additional bounty slots
    • Three new competitive multiplayer maps: Pantheon, Skyshock, and The Cauldron
    • New cooperative Strike: The Will of Crota. Purge a twisted horror from the Cosmodrome
    • An additional resident of the Tower: Eris, a resolute survivor of an ill-fated mission
    • And a new six-player Raid: Crota’s End. Face him in the deepest dark

Some exclusive content is also coming to the PS4 edition.

Look below for some recently released Dark Below images.
