Every time I’ve fired up Steam this week, I’ve been greeted by ads for a game called The Talos Principle. I’d never heard of it, but it had a picture of a robot holding a cat, so I installed it.

Almost every evening here on Kotaku, I run a feature called “Fine Art“. It is, as the tagline says, “a celebration of the work of video game artists, showcasing the best of both their professional and personal portfolios.” This post in particular, though, is going to attempt the impossible, and try and pick out a few pieces I think were the best for 2014.

The Epic Rap Battles of History video series has been going for a couple years. The crew behind the show, which is in its fourth “season,” consistently manages to create simple beats and entertainingly brutal verbal disses by ringleaders Peter Shukoff and Lloyd Ahlquist, and some impressive costumes for the core cast that performs as various figures from history, pop culture, and the creative scene. The latest entry pits Steven Spielberg against Alfred Hitchcock in a multi-act verse showdown. But this is an extra-long episode — typically each combatant gets a couple rounds in — with two big guns stars. Check out the epic rap battle between Spielberg and Hitchcock below.
Here’s the making-of footage for the episode. These guys started doing these a few years ago for less than $100 per episode, but now that each episode routinely garners over 10m views, they’re able to leverage a few more resources.
The team also recently released a “Ghostbusters vs. the Mythbusters” battle, which is a bit better than the Spielberg v. Hitchcock episode.

Phil Lord and Chris Miller have built up so much goodwill at this point, they could probably get audiences to watch anything. But even they may be testing their limits with MoonQuake Lake, a third-rate Twilight knockoff starring Mila Kunis, Ashton Kutcher, and Rihanna.
Or rather, they might be pushing it if MoonQuake Lake were a real film instead of a pitch-perfect sendup of the fantasy YA subgenre. It’s the best joke from Annie, the new musical by Will Gluck. Watch Lord and Miller’s MoonQuake Lake trailer — and their tongue-in-cheek reaction to the film’s Golden Globes snub — after the jump.
Sony shared the MoonQuake Lake trailer on the fake film’s real website.
MoonQuake Lake even has its own theme song by Beck and Sia, featuring such eloquent lyrics as “She’s a fish and he’s a boy.”
Kutcher, Lord, and Miller took to Twitter to show off their new masterpiece.

Proud to unveil our next project… Catch a sneak peek when you see #AnnieMovie in theaters December 19th.

Who am I kidding? I would absolutely watch MoonQuake Lake. Not only is it directed by Lord and Miller, it stars Rihanna as a freakin’ lake monster. With fangs and everything.
Everything about this is perfect, from the chintzy special effects to the way-too-old casting to the stilted dialogue (“Said the boy who doesn’t have to go home to the moon every night”). The only thing it’s missing is gratuitous shirtlessness, but Annie is a family film.
In fact, MoonQuake Lake may be getting better buzz at this point than Annie itself. The Sony musical is currently sitting at 21% on Rotten Tomatoes. Uf. Guess Lord and Miller really can make gold out of anything.
Unfortunately, genre movies still tend to get overlooked in the awards race and MoonQuake Lake is no exception. In an interview with The Huffington Post, Lord and Miller were gracious about their snub.
PL: We’re really disappointed, but we made it for the fans. I know that we’ll win the award in their heart.
PL: We’ll get them the next time.
CM: “Moonquake Lake,” we’re envisioning as a four-part series. Although we might split the fourth movie into three movies. So, as many as seven films.
PL: The “Moonquake” fans, or “Quakers,” are a very powerful lobbying group. So, I will see you at the People’s Choice Awards.
MoonQuake Lake is nowhere to be seen on the release calendar, for the obvious reason that it doesn’t actually exist. (At least, not yet.) But Annie hits theaters December 19.

The Sony hack has taught us many things. On the movie side, it has taught us that Sony really does care about Spider-Man. They might not know what to do with him but there’s no doubt everyone is looking at every possible option for the character. You’ve probably already read a bit about the Sony talks with Marvel to get the character to appear in Captain America: Civil War, or of a possible animated movie by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, or of Marvel’s desire to recast Andrew Garfield. Now a few more details have leaked.
Turns out, the discussions with Marvel went a little deeper than we initially thought, with many different angles examined about how that marriage could work. Plus, there was a major internal discussion about how they could possibly reboot the franchise for a third time, avoiding the origin story and maybe even adapting one of the most popular Marvel Comics Spider-Man stories of all time.
Below, read the latest on plans to possibly reboot Spider-Man again.
First up, The Daily Beast found an 8 page document dated November 13, 2014 on how to reboot Spider-Man. In it, the point is made that they don’t need to redo the origin story again, citing James Bond as an example of the fact that audiences will recognize the character without the origin.
He then listed a group of filmmakers he felt would be great to direct a reboot. None of these people are attached, or necessarily available, but it gives an idea how how big and important they want to go with this: Brad Bird, Chris Buck & Jennifer Lee (Frozen), Damien Chazelle (Whiplash), Joe Cornish (Attack the Block), Glenn Ficarra & John Requa (Crazy, Stupid, Love), James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy), Don Hall & Chris Williams (Big Hero 6), Phil Lord & Chris Miller (The LEGO Movie), Joachim Rønning & Espen Sandberg (Kon-Tiki), Colin Trevorrow (Jurassic World), Edgar Wright, and David Yates (Harry Potter).
Next, the document suggests two different possible stories. First is an adaptation of “Kraven’s Last Hunt,” a 1987 storyline that ran in Amazing Spider-Man #293-294, Spectacular Spider-Man #131-132 and Web of Spider-Man #31-32. It’s considered one of the best stories in the character’s history. Next, the suggestion is to catch up with Spider-Man as an adult, after he’s been the character for years and everyone is used to his presence.
These are both pretty radical directions to take with the series. Neither is apparently happening yet but, it’s possible.
Another set of leaks, these acquired by Mashable, show that a deal for Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci to write The Amazing Spider-Man 3 was shelved. Also, chairman of Sony Amy Pascal seemed very open to the idea of Spider-Man appearing in Captain America: Civil War, but she had a long laundry list of questions that would need to be answered before that took place. This long, detailed exchange seems to show three things. First, that Sony and Marvel were not close to working out a deal. Second, it was going to be very difficult to find a middle ground. And third, they definitely wanted to consider the option, if the terms were right.
Those emails also confirm that they’re very much still considering Venom, Sinister Six, a female starred movie, the animated movie and more. It’s all on the table.
Read more of the emails and details at the above links. What do you think the studio could possibly do a Spider-Man reboot again

Electronic Arts’ soccer sim FIFA 15 managed to retain its position atop the UK All Format Chart despite a 20 percent drop in sales.
With the annual shopping season in full flow, the top five positions are unchanged this week, with Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare in second, GTA V in third, Far Cry 4 in fourth and Lego Batman 3: Beyond Gotham in fifth.
In a surprise spate of sales for Nintendo’s last-gen system, the Wii version of Just Dance 2015 has propelled sales of Ubisoft’s title to sixth. That result shows that the seasonal appeal of the Wii still carries weight some eight years since the system’s release, and two years since Nintendo released the machine’s successor.
