  • Cedric Nicolas-Troyan to Direct ‘The Huntsman’ After Frank Darabont Departure

Cedric Nicolas-Troyan to Direct ‘The Huntsman’ After Frank Darabont Departure

    Huntsman director

It’s been an up and down news cycle for The Huntsman, which will be Universal’s prequel to the 2012 film Snow White and the Huntsman. First there was the news that it would leave out Snow White, but then came the announcement that Frank Darabont would write and direct. In a surprise move, however, Darabont pulled out of directing last week, thanks to “creative differences.” Now Universal has signed Cedric Nicolas-Troyan — the second-unit director and visual effects supervisor on the original film — to direct The Huntsman.

THR has the news, which was previously rumored by Schmoes Know. Nicolas-Troyan scored an Oscar nomination for his visual effects work on the original film. He also recently worked as second unit director on Maleficent, in addition to many other credits. He has been linked to the Highlander reboot, but whether or not that will happen now is open to question. Universal is trying to push The Huntsman into production quickly.

While Kristen Stewart will not return as Snow White, Chris Hemsworth will be back to play the title role, and Charlize Theron will once again play the queen Ravenna. The film is a prequel, with THR saying the script by Darabont focuses on “the Huntsman and Ravenna’s lives before the arrival of Snow White.”

Emily Blunt is also in talks for a role; she’ll play Ravenna’s sister.

The Huntsman is set for release on April 22, 2016. Here’s what Universal said about the film when it was officially announced:

The fantastical world of 2012’s global hit SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN expands to reveal how the fates of two characters, The Huntsman Eric and Ravenna, intersected before they met Snow White. Chris Hemsworth and Oscar® winner Charlize Theron return to their roles in a new epic action-adventure, THE HUNTSMAN. Three-time Oscar® nominee Frank Darabont (The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile) directs and wrote the current draft of the screenplay, with earlier drafts by Craig Mazin and Evan Spiliotopoulos. Producer Joe Roth (Maleficent, Alice in Wonderland) once again leads the team in a breathtaking new tale from the legendary saga.

  • UK Theater Surprises Fans With Interactive ‘Kingsman’ Upgrade

UK Theater Surprises Fans With Interactive ‘Kingsman’ Upgrade

    Kingsman upgrade

When theater attendance is declining overall, a little extra showmanship never hurts when trying to convince audience that theaters are the number one way to see a film. Food and drink, live personal appearances and quote-along events have become the obvious go-tos for most programmers. But some want to go a bit further. Take the Kingsman upgrade offered at one UK theater during a preview screening of Matthew Vaughn‘s film Kingsman: The Secret Service. If seeing the movie isn’t enough, how about being escorted into the film though a gauntlet of stunt performers in a live action scene? Check out video below.

In truth, this video probably makes the experience look a lot more frenetic than it really was — the highlighted couple looks bemused more than exhilarated at the end. But it’s a neat idea regardless, and there are fans who would be ecstatic to get this sort of treatment.

The video comes from Vue Cinemas in the UK, which hosted this event, and has Kingsman opening on January 24. Their video page explains: “On Thursday 8th January 2015, Vue cinema-goers got offered a ‘Kingsman’ upgrade …but what that entailed was not entirely what they were expecting.”

Kingsman opens in the US on February 13. Samuel L. JacksonMichael CaineMark StrongJack DavenportSofia Boutella, and Sophie Cookson also star.

Based upon the acclaimed comic book and directed by Matthew Vaughn (Kick Ass, X-Men First Class), Kingsman: The Secret Service tells the story of a super-secret spy organization that recruits an unrefined but promising street kid into the agency’s ultra-competitive training program just as a global threat emerges from a twisted tech genius.

  • ‘The Interview’ Hits Netflix This Weekend; Did the VOD Release Lose Money for Sony?

‘The Interview’ Hits Netflix This Weekend; Did the VOD Release Lose Money for Sony?

    la_ca_1215_the_interview

After original plans for a wide release got all screwed up, The Interview went on to become Sony’s “#1 online film of all time.” But it still wasn’t enough to make The Interview turn a profit, according to the National Association of Theater Owners, which sounds all too pleased with their assessment.

Regardless, Sony is pressing on with The Interview‘s digital rollout, striking a deal to make the comedy available on Netflix just one month after its theatrical/VOD bow. More on The Interview Netflix debut and The Interview Sony losses after the jump.

Patrick Corcoran, vice president of NATO, laid out his case in a column for BoxOffice. “In this simultaneous-release game, Sony is $30 million in the hole and almost out of cards,” he wrote.

Sony had planned a traditional theatrical wide rollout for The Interview, but scrapped those plans after the group behind the Sony hack threatened violence. That decision brought widespread criticism from President Obama (among many others), and Sony wound up giving it a limited theatrical opening and a simultaneous VOD release. (That chain of events, by the way, is grossly misrepresented in Corcoran’s article.)

According to THR, this pissed off major theater chains, who had wanted Sony to delay The Interview‘s release rather than cancel it outright. NATO refrained at the time from commenting publicly due to the sensitive nature of the situation, but Corcoran’s piece now makes the group’s views clear. “Game not changed,” he crowed.

By Corcoran’s estimates, here’s what The Interview made:

    • $30 million from digital outlets (based on what Corcoran calls a “generous” total revenue estimate of $50 million; the studio itself has reported $40 million in sales and rentals so far)
    • $3.5 million from domestic ticket sales (based on an estimated final box office of $7 million; it’s grossed $6 million so far)
    • $10 million from international ticket sales (a guess which Corcoran again calls “generous,” and which is based on figures for Rogen’s last several films)

And here’s what The Interview cost:

    • $44 million production budget (based on leaked info; Sony insiders claim to THR the figure was closer to $40 million)
    • $30+ million marketing budget (Sony insiders claim the figure was closer to $20 million, but others dispute that)

In contrast, he argues, Sony stood to make about $12.5 million more had the traditional release proceeded as planned.

Corocoran’s whole column is worth a read if you’re curious about NATO’s take on The Interview rollout. He crunches the numbers and concludes it’s “game over” for simultaneous releases. Which seems kind of optimistic. Regardless of how The Interview did, it’s unlikely that any one title will settle the question of release windows once and for all. But hey, he has to defend his people.

While he makes some good points about Sony’s struggle to make its money back on The Interview, it hardly seems fair to point to this movie as evidence that day-and-date releases don’t work for studios. Considering the film wasn’t conceived of and (initially) marketed with a VOD release in mind — and considering the massive controversy surrounding it — Sony is probably just relieved it was able to recoup some of its costs.

In any case, Sony is embracing The Interview‘s popularity with people who are willing to watch movies on the Internet. Netflix CEO Reed Hastings has announced that the comedy will come to its streaming service just weeks after its initial release on VOD and in theaters.

“We are thrilled to offer exclusively the controversial comedy, The Interview, to our US and Canadian members beginning this Saturday, Jan. 24 – just thirty days after it debuted in theaters and pay-per-view,” he wrote in a letter to shareholders (via THR).

  • Microsoft Exec On Xbox One Sales: "More Work To Do, But It Was A Good Holiday"

Microsoft Exec On Xbox One Sales: "More Work To Do, But It Was A Good Holiday"

Microsoft’s top Xbox boss, Phil Spencer, has spoken out to say that while the Xbox One enjoyed a strong end to 2014 (it outsold the rival PS4 in the US for November and December), there is more work to do.

Writing on Twitter, Spencer thanked Xbox fans for their support, attributing their faith in the Xbox brand as the key element in helping Microsoft turn the tide.

“PS4 is also doing very well. Console and game sales are strong, which is a good thing for the industry” — Phil Spencer

“Most important thing was Xbox fans sticking with us, they kept believing,” Spencer said. “More work to do but it was a good holiday.”

Another fan pointed out that, even though the Xbox One outsold Sony’s console for the final two months of the year, in fact, the PS4 was the top-selling system overall for all of 2014.

Spencer replied: “PS4 is also doing very well. Console and game sales are strong, which is a good thing for the industry.”

Microsoft has not announced a new Xbox One sales number since November 2014, when the company said shipments of the system were approaching 10 million units. It’s possible we’ll hear a new number next week when Microsoft reports its latest earnings on January 26.

  • Texts Reveal Counter-Strike Player Bragging About Match Fix

Texts Reveal Counter-Strike Player Bragging About Match Fix

A long-suspected match-fixing scandal that has plagued the Counter-Strike pro-player community has resurfaced following a new investigation undertaken by The Daily Dot.

Suspicions were immediately raised in August when iBUYPOWER, a then-revered and successful pro-Counter-Strike team, were crushed 16-4 when playing against a team that were believed to be easy opponents.

Combatants of iBUYPOWER were heard laughing as they died at key points, while their use of combat knives instead of firearms was considered a curious decision. A video of the contest, which took place during CEVO Pro-season 5, can be seen above.

Suspicions regarding the infamous CEVO August match began immediately, as the team was seen making curious choices

It was believed that multiple bets were placed just prior to the match, with wagers that garnered more than $10,000 in earnings.

While the accusations had quietened in the months that followed, an ex-girlfriend of Derek Boorn (a pro-player who has joined a new team with former members of iBUYPOWER), published text messages that appear to show him confessing that the match was thrown.

“By the way, all that drama with iBUYPOWER,” he wrote, “they really did throw the match lol.”

Initially, as images of text messages published by the ex-girlfriend–Ashley Leboeuf–had spread across Reddit, she began to face claims that she had forged them. However, The Daily Dot has been able to verify their authenticity after meetings with Ms. Leboeuf.

The text messages can be found below:

As the images spread to members of the ESEA (a Counter-Strike pro-player community), a representative for the group confirmed on Reddit that Derek Boorn’s membership had been terminated.

“Derek is an event manager that connects Insider users with professional players for those types of events,” the representative said.

“He does not work with the League division in any capacity and after reviewing things we’ve terminated him from his role with Insider events.”

In a statement to The Daily Dot, Boorn did not address the text’s authenticity, only claiming that he had “zero interest in participating in any type of revenge mission she [Leboeuf] has going.”

“It really pains me to do something like this to someone I care about” — Leboeuf

Leboeuf said it was not an easy decision to incriminate her ex-boyfriend.

“It really pains me to do something like this to someone I care about,” she said. “But I can’t stand that the community respects these players when they do things like this. Amateur players look up to them, and they just use that to get away with anything they want.”

Meanwhile, Shahzeb Khan, another ex-iBUYPOWER player, has confessed that he took part in match fixing during the inafmous match in August.

“The day of this match I had placed a bet on iBUYPOWER. I brought up the bet while talking to [pro-player team manager] Casey Foster; he then voice-called me on Steam Friends and told me to change my bet. He made it very clear the match was going to be thrown. I didn’t want to get involved with any of it but I changed my bet, as I thought would be logical at the time while also sharing this information with a friend whom I assumed to have bet the same.”

The full confession, along with more evidence that connects iBUYPOWER to the match-fixing scandal where more than $10,000 of earnings were made, can be found on The Daily Dot.

  • Steam Broadcasting Now Available to All

Steam Broadcasting Now Available to All

Steam Broadcasting, a new, Twitch-like feature that players can use to stream their games for anyone to watch, is now available to the platform’s 100 million+ users. Broadcasting was announced in early December 2014 and had previously been available to some Steam users in beta form.

The feature is currently available to all Steam users as part of the the latest client update. This patch, which will be automatically downloaded, also introduces an in-game FPS counter and lots more.

To use Steam Broadcasting, users can click “Watch Game” on their friend’s profile. Viewers don’t have to also own the game, pay a fee, or install any additional apps. Though Broadcasting was designed to highlight game clips, users can also utilize the feature to broadcast anything on their desktop.

Steam Broadcasts do, however, forbid a range of content. This includes the following:

    • Porn, inappropriate or offensive content, warez, or leaked content or anything else not safe for work
    • Any discussion of piracy
    • Cheating, hacking, game exploits
    • Threats of violence or harassment, even as a joke
    • Posted copyright material such as magazine scans
    • Soliciting, begging, auctioning, raffling, selling, advertising, referrals
    • Racism or discrimination
    • Abusive language, including swearing

In launching Steam Broadcasting, Valve is entering the streaming market currently dominated by Twitch, which is owned by Amazon. Steam is indeed a force, with 100 million accounts and close to 4,000 games, though it remains to be seen what effect Steam Broadcasting might have on Twitch.

Earlier this year, Steam rolled out a major design overhaul that introduced a range of features and functionality aimed at helping you filter through the flood of new releases.

  • Sony Offers 10% PS Store Discount Following PSN Xmas Woes

Sony Offers 10% PS Store Discount Following PSN Xmas Woes

PlayStation 4 and PS Vita customers have been offered a ten percent discount on the PS Store for a limited time, as part of a peace offering following the PSN downtime over the Christmas period.

The discount will run for four days, valid from January 23-26 (starting and ending at 9am Pacific in the US, and 9am GMT in Europe). Exclusions apply too, with PS Plus subscriptions, Music Unlimited and video rentals not eligible for discount.

Sony says the code can be found on the PlayStation Store and via the PlayStation twitter account (the code was unavailable at the time of going to press).

Meanwhile, Sony has also begun to extend users’ PS Plus subscriptions by five days at no extra cost. “You will receive an email in the coming days with a confirmation of details about the extension,” the company said.

The discount was offered in response to the PlayStation Network outages over the Christmas period, with Sony’s online network inaccessible following a DDoS attack. The culprit of the attack, an online group called Lizard Squad, is now being pursued by the authorities. At least one arrest has already been made.
