There’s no getting around it: a lot of modern, graphically intense games look kinda same-y. At a glance, it can be hard to tell the difference. But show me a shot of the Mass Effect series and I’ll instantly be like, “Yeah, that’s Mass Effect.” Why? A single shape that’s everywhere.

On July 10th, 2014, a small, mysterious game called “Do Not Believe His Lies” was uploaded to the iOS app store. Since then, over 40,000 people have downloaded the app. Nobody has beaten it. Hell, nobody quite knows what it is, either.
Then, the game throws you its first riddle: The first puzzle stumped me for a while. I tried the time, AT&T, Share, Feedback. It turns out, you can only see the answer if you have your brightness on your phone all the way up. If you’re viewing this on a PC or a mobile device with the brightness turned up, the answer might be more immediately visible to you. Either way: this is just the first puzzle. Nothing major. The solution is: When you punch that in, the game automatically throws you the next puzzle: Morse! Pretty simple. The message translates to: So far, pretty easy. Then it gives you this riddle:This is where I got completely lost. I turned to the , and found that people have been posting there for the last eight months, diligently solving puzzles from this game. Some puzzles took months to figure out. For this one in particular, someone actually inverted the picture, cut it into squares, and rearranged it into the text. This is what it says: If you’re playing the game seriously, my bet is that you’re going to be inputting a looot of wrong answers—and therefore seeing a lot of ads. Every puzzle also gives you the option to purchase a hint. The hints aren’t solutions, but they do cost money. I do understand that the developer needs to make money off this game somehow, but it’s hard not to walk away with the sense that it was deliberately made difficult to try to squeeze as much money away from people as possible. Maybe that’s just me being cynical. And maybe it doesn’t matter in the end—the game is pretty damn good. Even though I’ve only played a small portion of it, the game managed to unsettle me. Now I’m eating all the mystery up.

While we’re still waiting for Kevin Smith to deliver his holiday horror anthology Anti-Claus, the folks at Legendary Pictures are beginning production on their own Christmas-themed horror comedy called Krampus. The film tells the story of young Max, who turns his back on Christmas as his dysfunctional family comes together and comically clashes over the holidays. But things get even worse when they unleash the wrath of Krampus, a vicious, ancient entity from European folklore, who begins to wreak havoc, giving monstrous life to holiday icons and creating even more terror for this fractured family. Following yesterday’s news that Star Wars: Episode VIII would arrive on May 26th, 2017, bringing the sci-fi saga back to summer where it belongs, 20th Century Fox made a smart decision to move one of their blockbusters out of the way. Though Fantastic Four 2 wasn’t hitting theaters until June 2nd, 2017, the studio wants to give Disney (and themselves) another week of box office breathing room by moving the comic book sequel back one week to June 9th, 2017. It’s not a big move, but one extra week will give more people time to see Episode VIII without harming the box office gross of Fantastic Four 2, so it’s a good call. ›››

Even though writer/director Kevin Smith was once leaning towards retirement from filmmaking, the past couple years have actually seen him take on more projects at once than he’s ever had before. He’s going to finish his horror trilogy that he revealed last summer, which already began with Tusk last year, will continue with Yoga Hosers on June 1st this summer, and end with Moose Jaws sometime next year. There’s also Clerks III shooting this May, and the holiday horror flick Anti-Claus on the way as well. And now Smith seems to be hinting at a sequel to the biggest box office bomb of his career after all those are done. Read on! ›››

Right around the time of the Academy Awards, we got a “Sesame Street” parody of Birdman with Caroll Spinney, the man who brings Big Bird to life on the iconic children’s television show. Now we have the traile for a documentary called I Am Big Bird: The Caroll Spinney Story on the way looking at the man who few people know, despite his work as one of the most iconic Muppets of all-time. You may not know, but Spinney is also the voice of Oscar the Grouch, and this doc, which has been on the festival circuit for awhile, chronicles Spinney’s life and career starting from life as a child to work with Jim Henson. ›››
