Watch: IBM's Artificial Intelligence-Created Trailer for Sci-Fi 'Morgan'

    Morgan Trailer IBM

Now this is unique marketing. Fox has partnered with IBM to create a special trailer for the sci-fi Morgan, about an artificially created being. It was made by IBM’s Watson and is the first-ever AI-created movie trailer. “Utilizing experimental Watson APIs and machine learning techniques, the IBM Research system analyzed hundreds of horror/thriller movie trailers. After learning what keeps audiences on the edge of their seats, the AI system suggested the top 10 best candidate moments for a trailer from the movie Morgan, which an IBM filmmaker then edited and arranged together.” The film stars Kate Mara as an expert called in to analyze the realistic aspects of an artificial person known as “Morgan”, played by Anya Taylor-Joy. They’ve been pushing some really fantastic marketing for this film, I just hope it all pays off. Have a watch. ›››

  • Activision Promising "Additional Game Reveals" for Call of Duty Event Today

Activision Promising "Additional Game Reveals" for Call of Duty Event Today

Activision’s Call of Duty fan event, Call of Duty XP, kicks off today in California. In a news release sent out this morning, the publisher teased that the show’s opening briefing will feature “additional game reveals,” as well as some kind of “news” and more. Additionally, Activision will for the first time show off Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare and Call of Duty Remastered‘s multiplayer modes during the event.

The briefing kicks off at 10 AM PT / 1 PM ET and you can watch it live on GameSpot.

Activision did not say if the “game reveals” are new features for Infinite Warfare and/or Modern Warfare Remastered or completely new games. Whatever the case, we’d expect them to be related to Call of Duty, given Call of Duty XP is focused completely on the juggernaut shooter series. GameSpot will bring you all the news from the show as it’s announced; we also have editors on the ground at the event itself.

Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare launches on November 4 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. Modern Warfare Remastered, the remastered version of 2007’s Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, is included with premium versions of Infinite Warfare, which start at $80. Activision has said Modern Warfare Remastered will not be sold on its own, but whether or not that is true forever remains to be seen.

The briefing is being held today to kick off Activision’s Call of Duty XP event in California.

We will update this post with an embed for the livestream as the event draws closer. For now, bookmark this page and come back soon to see the gameplay.

  • Destiny's Battle Axe Forged in Real Life

Destiny's Battle Axe Forged in Real Life

Destiny‘s Iron Battle Axe weapon has been forged in real life–and it looks incredible.

Bungie recruited the blacksmith company Sword and the Stone to make the weapon, which Lord Saladin wields in the new Rise of Iron expansion coming out later this month. As you can see, forging the weapon in real life required a lot of time and effort. If there’s one thing I’m disappointed by, it’s that they don’t end the video by slicing fruit with it as has become the norm for these kinds of videos. Oh well.

Based in Burbank, California, Sword and the Stone was founded by master blacksmith Tony Swatton (seen in the video) more than 25 years ago. The company makes all manner of weapons, armor, and props. One of its past video game creations was Sephiroth’s sword from Final Fantasy VII.

  • Destiny Servers Going Down Next Week, Here's When and for How Long

Destiny Servers Going Down Next Week, Here's When and for How Long

A new update for Destiny is coming next week on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The update, 2.4.0, will arrive on September 8 alongside server maintenance. As part of this, Destiny’s servers will be offline for around eight hours, running from 8 AM PT to 4 PM PT that day.

As explained in a Bungie news post, the Destiny Companion App won’t work normally during the downtime, as “functionality will be limited.” The full patch notes for 2.4.0 have not yet been posted.

    3111237-roi_strike_wretchedeye_3rdp_04.jpg

Bungie also explained that Destiny’s Clan features will be taken offline with the release of update 2.4.0. This is being done in preparation for the new in-game Clan Roster system on the way.

“Clan tags will not appear on player nameplates until functionality is restored,” the developer said. “Bungie.net Clan enrollment and moderation functionality will not be impacted.”

Another thing to note about Destiny 2.4.0 is that it changes the way players can acquire Sterling Treasure. Beginning on September 8, you can only acquire one Sterling Treasure every week through the Level 41 Prison of Elders mode. When the Rise of Iron expansion comes out on September 20, the in-game Eververse Trading Company store will stop selling Sterling Treasure for Silver, Destiny’s microtransaction system. Going forward, Sterling Treasure will be replaced by Radiant Treasures, Bungie said. These contain Silver Dust and new ornaments. You’ll know more about Radiant Treasures when Rise of Iron launches, the developer explained.

To help prepare players for the upcoming update, Bungie rounded up some things you should be aware of; these are listed below, as written by Bungie.

    • Please ensure that you have the proper amount of space available to accept Update 2.4.0.
    • Interrupting downloads may force all previous content to be re-downloaded on some consoles.
    • Some consoles will attempt to verify all previously downloaded content before downloading Update 2.4.0. If any issues are found, or the verification process is interrupted, all previous content will be deleted and downloaded once more.

Finally, Bungie said it’s aware of a Destiny issue that is blocking players on local networks from creating a fireteam. “We have identified the issue, and are investigating a potential resolution,” Bungie said.

If you’re running into this problem, you can visit this support thread to learn about workarounds.

  • Uncharted Movie Loses Release Date, as Writer Teases Opening Sequence

The long-in-development Uncharted movie has suffered another apparent setback.

Comingsoon.net reports that Sony Pictures has removed the action-adventure movie from its release calendar. Previously, the film was expected to come to theaters on June 30, 2017.

In late July, it was announced that Joe Carnahan (The Grey, The A-Team) would write the script for the Uncharted movie. At the time, he said he was interested in directing it, too, but it’s unclear if he has been assigned that role. Carnahan is directing 2018’s Bad Boys for Life, but whether or not this has anything to do with the Uncharted film losing its release date remains to be seen.

Whatever the case, despite the release date removal, Carnahan seems optimistic. He teased on Twitter that the film’s “action-heavy” opening scene will be “really good.”

The opening scene for UNCHARTED…at least in script form, is really, REALLY GOOD.

    — Joe Carnahan (@carnojoe) September 2, 2016

The Uncharted movie doesn’t currently have any actors on board. It does, however, have producers in Charles Roven, Avi Arad, and Alex Gartner, in addition to Sony creative exec Jonathan Kadin’s supervision. In 2015, Nathan Drake voice actor Nolan North said that fans don’t want a movie, “no matter who’s the star of it.”

Despite what fans may want, the Uncharted movie has had some difficulty getting off the ground. The production has seen many different castings and directors. Additionally, filming was supposed to start in 2015, though that didn’t happen. Details from the film were revealed as part of last year’s Sony email leak.

As for the Uncharted game franchise, Uncharted 4’s multiplayer mode got a new map this week and more are on the way for September.

  • Shenmue and Shenmue 2 Remakes Face Challenges, But Sega Wants Them to Happen

Sega has said it is internally discussing remakes of the first Shenmue and Shenmue 2, and explained why the project is proving difficult to get off the ground. Speaking to MCV, European exec Jurgen Post said there’s “definitely a desire” to remake the first two games.

“Even online, people are constantly talking about products they would like to see come back, and Shenmue 1 and 2 are probably in the top two places. We are looking into it. It is an old IP, it is a beloved IP–and not just by consumers, but also within Sega, we have people saying that if we could do Shenmue 1 and 2 all over again, we’d definitely go for it.”

However, remaking the Dreamcast classic and its sequel would require a considerable development effort, Post said, and this is one of the major hurdles Sega is facing.

“The issue is that it is a big game. It is a project from many years ago,” he added. “If we are to do it, we’d want to do a fantastic conversion to the current platforms, and there are a lot of licences in the game, which were cleared many years ago, so we will need to renegotiate those contracts. We are looking into it. We haven’t given it a green light, but it has our full attention.”

Shenmue 3 was one of the biggest announcements of E3 2015 and, following a successful Kickstarter campaign, went into full development. Shenmue 3 generated $6.3 million on Kickstarter, the most any video game has ever earned on the crowdfunding platform.

In July, it was announced that Keiji Okayasu, who served as game and program director on the first game, was returning for Shenmue 3.

  • Quantum Break PC Steam and Retail Release Delayed

The retail and Steam releases of Quantum Break on PC have been pushed from September 14 to September 29, it has been announced.

“Due to additional time required for mastering and manufacturing the Quantum Break – Timeless Collector’s Edition for retail, the decision has been made to move the release to September 29,” reads a press release. “This concerns both the Steam version as well as the retail edition.”

As previously detailed, these versions of Quantum Break will include “all of the latest updates” and will sell for $40/£40. The Timeless Collector’s Edition will feature premium packaging, a making-of Blu-ray, an artbook, a soundtrack CD, an A3 poster, and a quick-start guide.

Quantum Break originally launched in April for Xbox One and Windows 10 PC. The announcement of the Steam version today comes after Xbox boss Phil Spencer said more Steam releases of Microsoft-published games were on the way.

In GameSpot’s Quantum Break review, Peter Brown awarded it a 6/10, saying its “gameplay is essentially divided equally between combat and hapless environment traversal.”

He continued: “Getting to the end of Quantum Break can be an interesting ride at times, but no matter how impressive the combat is, or how great the game looks, there’s no getting around the fact that it’s driven by a story with limited appeal and hindered by disappointing design decisions.”

  • PlayStation Move Will Be Sold in Double-Pack for PlayStation VR

PlayStation Move Will Be Sold in Double-Pack for PlayStation VR

When Sony’s PlayStation VR headset goes on sale in October, PS3-era motion controller, PlayStation Move, will also be available again in stores. Images of its packing and a product description have now surfaced online, along with confirmation the controller will be available in a double-pack.

As reported by Australian site Press-Start, the PlayStation Move product description states the controller is “not required for [PlayStation VR] titles,” but they “will bring the best experience whilst playing VR titles that will utilise [controllers].”

It continues: “Nearly all PlayStation VR titles will support DualShock 4 controllers and several games will deliver an enhanced experience that further immerses gamers with the use of peripherals such as the Move controllers.

“For example, Batman: Arkham VR can be played without Move controllers, however you would be holding DualShock controllers in each hand so the PS4 camera [can] see the light bar for the movement of each hand.”

It is unclear whether a single Move controller option will also be available.

Take a look at the packaging for the PlayStation Move below.

    3123900-1714942143-21726.jpg

PlayStation VR will cost $400 and will arrive on October 13. Overseas, PlayStation VR will cost €399 in Europe, £349 in the United Kingdom, $549.95 in Australia, and ¥44,980 in Japan. It does not come with Move controllers or the PlayStation Camera, which are required for some games.

The package includes a small processor unit and a series of cables, including HDMI and USB, among others, along with the headset itself. Sony is set to show off a number of VR titles at Tokyo Games Show 2016, which starts on September 16. These games include Batman: Arkham VR, Rez Infinite, and the virtual reality version of Resident Evil 7.
