Mario 64 is one of the best games of all time. You probably know that, but have you ever wondered about the specifics of why that is? Here, let the game’s creators explain to you that it’s stuff like the momentum of Mario’s movement, the placement of the camera and the feel of Mario’s jumps.
“What are you?” Paramount has debuted a series of mysterious 15-second teasers for the upcoming Ghost in the Shell live-action movie, starring Scarlett Johansson as The Major. Each teaser has a tiny snippet of footage and provides a very interesting introduction to this movie. Three of them feature Johansson, in iconic scenes that anime fans will likely recognize. One of them features Takeshi Kitano playing Daisuke Aramaki looking pissed as hell firing a revolver then dumping the shells. And one features a mysterious kimono woman with a mask, potentially the villain who wants to sabotage Hanka Robotic’s AI technology. I have to admit – I really love these teasers, they’re unique and the perfect way to introduce the world to this movie. The way they glitch in and out is awesome. I want more promos like this. “This is just the beginning.”›››
“If this one doesn’t scare you, you’re already dead.” Horror fans already know this one well. Back in 1979, director Don Coscarelli introduced The Tall Man and his deadly silver Sentinel Spheres to the world in a sci-fi horror film called Phantasm. The film built up a cult following over the years and, believe it or not, they’re just about to release the fourth sequel titled Phantasm: Ravager (see the trailer for that here). In addition to the release of that new film, Coscarelli’s original film that started it all is getting a re-release as Phantasm: Remastered. This brand new 4K rereleae also features remastered 5.1 surround sound, all overseen by J.J. Abrams and the folks at Bad Robot. The film stars A. Michael Baldwin, Angus Scrimm, Reggie Bannister and Bill Thornbury. If you’ve never seen this film, it’s worth checking out. Seriously. ›››
“I’m gunna fight you… Parking lot. After school. It’s ON!” Warner Bros has unleashed the first trailer for a new comedy called Fist Fight, about an after school fight between Charlie Day and Ice Cube. Yep, it’s as fun as it sounds, but there’s tons of crazy stuff leading up to this battle – it’s not just a simple fist fight, it’s an epic rivalry. On the last day of school, these two teachers decide to finally fight it out at an “old-fashioned throw down”. Just fire it up and see for yourself. Also starring Tracy Morgan, Jillian Bell, Dean Norris, Christina Hendricks, Dennis Haysbert, and JoAnna Garcia Swisher. From this teaser, this movie actually looks like it might be crazy enough to watch, just hoping they don’t hold back at all. Let them fight! ›››
“A lot of people try to imitate Mifune, but nobody can.” Stop and watch this now! The first official trailer has debuted online for a fantastic documentary called Mifune: The Last Samurai, profiling the life and work of Japanese actor Toshiro Mifune. If you’re a cinephile you’re already very familiar with Mifune – he starred in numerous Akira Kurosawa films including The Seven Samurai, Yojimbo and Rashomon, as well as tons of other classic Japanese films. This doc examines his life work with old footage and photographs and tells his story from the early beginnings of his career, to his falling out with Kurosawa and final roles. Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg are two of the filmmakers who talk about how incredible Mifune was, with more special guests. I caught this film at the Telluride Film Festival and loved it – highly recommended. ›››
There are film festivals, and then there is Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas. The time of year die-hard film fans liken to Christmas is once again upon us, and we’re only moments away from this year’s batch of cinematic craziness and insane experiences being unleashed. If the last couple of years are any indication, 2016 is going to be a virtual madhouse in Austin thanks in large part to that special brand of madness only the Alamo Drafthouse can deliver. The movies are just the beginning, too, as the programming during the week of Fantastic Fest always seems bigger and better than the previous year. Movies and TV premieres; a Satanic escape room; a special, horror VR experience; and countless hours of additional insanity are just a few of the items that have piqued our interest for this year so far. And it’s only getting started. ›››
Publisher FDG Entertainment tweeted the picture below, which appears to show the game running on Sony’s portable device. “Thank you all for voting to port Oceanhorn to PS Vita,” the company said.
Oceanhorn, the full name of which is Oceanhorn: Monster of Uncharted Seas, is already available on PC and mobile devices. It was released for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on September 7. No further details are available for the PS Vita version, but we’ll bring you more information as it’s released.
The Oceanhorn series contains obvious references to Nintendo’s Legend of Zelda franchise, riffing on its art and gameplay mechanics. FDG Entertainment says the game is a “carefully crafted love letter” to classic action adventure titles, containing influences from not only Zelda, but also Final Fantasy and Seiken Densetsu (known as Mana in the west).
Oceanhorn and its sequel are developed by Finnish studio Cornfox & Bros.
Dead Rising 4 sees the franchise return to its roots in a way, as the game brings back elements from the first entry including main character Frank West and the Willamette setting itself. However, Frank West voice actor TJ Rotolo was not brought back for the new game and now Capcom has explained why.
As part of a fan Q&A this week, Dead Rising asset manager Trant Lee-Amies explained that Frank West has “evolved” since the last time fans saw him. “We wanted to work with someone to provide a more grizzled, older take on Frank at this stage–just don’t ask him about his age,” Lee-Amies said.
Dead Rising 4 takes place 16 years after the events of the first game. As such, Capcom decided to cast a new actor for the role that “reflected his age while still retaining the charm and humor that made him such a hit with fans.”
Capcom has not yet revealed who is voicing Frank West in Dead Rising 4, but Lee-Amies is excited for the opportunity to finally tell fans who it is.
“We think Frank’s new voice actor has done a phenomenal job, and we can’t wait to share more of him with you in the future,” Lee-Amies explained.
Lee-Amies went on to say that actors get replaced all the time in media and entertainment, pointing to the James Bond series as an example. “It’s no disrespect to history or previous actors–TJ has done a bang-up job,” Lee-Amies said. “It was a chance to with a new game to progress the franchise as best we can with a different vision just as we see new James Bonds over the years.
2K’s Mafia III is getting a mobile version, it has been announced. Mafia III: Rivals, as it’s called, will launch for iOS and Android devices on October 7, the same day that the console and PC edition comes out.
According to the announcement, Rivals is set in the same setting–New Orleans (called New Bordeaux in the game)–but is played from a “whole new perspective.” The game’s characters, locations, and events are based on those in developer Hangar 13’s Mafia III. But the mobile game is more of an RPG.
Here’s how it’s described in a press release:
“Begin your life of crime squaring off against rival gangs in battle RPG combat. Recruit and train 40 crime bosses from the Mafia III universe as they join your crew, and destroy any foes getting in the way. Outfit New Bordeaux’s newest hit squad with an assortment of deadly weaponry and other gear. Join up with friends and battle players worldwide to see who has the deadliest crew in New Bordeaux.”
EA’s FIFA 17 doesn’t officially come out until Tuesday, September 27, but some Xbox One and PC owners can play it right now. The professional soccer game was added to EA/Origin Access today.
Everyone with a subscription ($5/month or $30/year) can now play the full game, though only for 10 hours. The clock runs while the game is open, so be sure to close it when you’re not playing. Additionally, all progress from the EA/Origin Access version carries forward to the full game when it comes out. On top of that, EA/Origin Access members save 10 percent, so they can get the game for $54 instead of $60.
