  • The best smartphone of 2020: 15 top mobile phones tested and ranked

The best smartphone of 2020: 15 top mobile phones tested and ranked

Our best smartphone list brings you 15 of the top phones available right now, but if you already have your mobile OS allegiance set you may want to check out either our ranking of the best Android phones or best iPhones.

If what’s on offer in our best smartphone list is a little too pricey for your taste, then don’t fear, as we’ve also got a list of the best cheap phones available right now.

The last two months has meant big changes to this list. Our best phone ranking witnessed a big shake-up with a whole bunch of new entries appearing in the list including the OnePlus 8 Pro, iPhone SE, Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra and many more.

We know that it’s not all about the high-cost, super spec phones all the time so we’ve made you a handy list of all the top smartphones that you can get on the market right now, assessing what really matters to you.

We test these phones rigorously, making sure that we check every angle and feature – but most importantly, considering whether they’ve got a decent battery, great screen, strong design and a cracking camera.

On top of that, they can’t be too exorbitant in price either – not everyone wants or can afford a supercar of a handset, so we’ve made sure there are plenty of options for you there.

Our best phone list has never looked better, so let’s get started on our list of the top 15 handsets. You can see them quickly below, and then we’re set to talk you through the very best phone in the world right now.

    Best phone at a glance:

    1. Samsung Galaxy S20/S20 Plus
    2. iPhone 11 Pro/11 Pro Max
    3. Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Plus
    4. OnePlus 8 Pro
    5. iPhone 11
    6. Samsung Galaxy Note 10
    7. Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra
    8. Xiaomi Mi Note 10
    9. iPhone SE
    10. OnePlus 7T Pro
    11. Samsung Galaxy S10/S10 Plus
    12. Google Pixel 4 XL
    13. Honor View 20
    14. Samsung Galaxy S10e
    15. Huawei P30 Pro

    Samsung Galaxy S20 Plus

    The Samsung Galaxy S20 Plus

The Samsung Galaxy S20 is the best smartphone available right now. That covers both the S20 and the larger Galaxy S20 Plus, as there’s very little difference between the two handsets aside from size and a couple of specs.

They take the very best of what’s on the smartphone market and put it together in a compelling package that we loved testing.

Screen: Both these devices have phone screens that are a cut above the rest, and each is capable of a 120Hz refresh rate that will allow for far smoother scrolling and gameplay on your phone’s screen.

Battery life: The battery life on the Galaxy S20 and Galaxy S20 Plus isn’t the best we’ve ever seen on a smartphone, but larger batteries than the S10 series allow these devices to last longer and it’ll be enough for your day.

Both devices come with wireless charging, and there’s also a Reverse Power Share feature that allows you to top up your friend’s phone too.

Camera: Samsung has improved the camera suite on the Galaxy S20 devices compared to the Galaxy S10. It may not look far better on paper, but larger pixels and improved software adds to the flagship experience.

Mini verdict: The S20 and S20 Plus are packed full of the best Samsung has to offer, and it comes together to give you the best smartphone experience around right now. If we had to pick one, we’d go for the bigger screen, larger battery slightly improved rear camera of the Galaxy S20 Plus, but both phones deserve their best phone crown.

    iPhone 11 Pro

Want something a bit more from your iPhone? You’re in luck with the iPhone 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max, as they feature improved spec including a more high-end rear camera that can compete with the very best.

It’ll cost more than the iPhone 11 (which is probably the best phone for the average iPhone user), but if you’re after the very best iPhone, the Pro range is what you want.

Other than the obvious size, there’s very little difference between the 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max, which is why we grouped them together in our best phone roundup.

Screen: It’s the biggest decision you’ll have to make. Will you go for the 5.8-inch 11 Pro (which is easier to use one-handed) or the larger 6.5-inch 11 Pro Max (which is great for movies and gaming)? Either way, you get a great display which packs a colourful punch.

Battery life: The battery life on the 11 Pro series is slightly longer than the last few generations of the iPhone, but don’t expect anything game changing here when it comes to the length your phone will last for.

Camera: Apple has put most of its focus into the rear cameras on this device, and while the design of the rear of the phone has been controversial these cameras can create some truly stunning photography that competes with the very best camera phones.

Mini verdict: You’ll have to spend a bit extra to get the iPhone 11 Pro, but it’s well worth it if you want a phone that sports iOS 13 but comes with top-end features.

    Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Plus

The Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Plus is one of the largest phones there is, but this stylus-toting handset is our third favourite phone you can buy right now.

It’s expensive, but it features some of the best specs you’ll get on a smartphone in 2020.

Screen: The screen on this phone is huge and the Infinity-O cutout means there’s little interruption to the display here, allowing for an immersive experience.

Battery life: We found the battery life on the Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Plus to easily last the whole day, plus the fast charging tech means you’re able to pump it up quickly when you’re nearing 0%.

Camera: The camera setup on the Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Plus isn’t the best on the market, but it’s impressive and offers a lot of fun features that you may want to play around with.

Mini Verdict: Samsung’s Galaxy Note 10 Plus is a remarkable device, but it’s only for those who want a large phone and don’t mind spending that bit extra on a device. The S20 Plus will be more suitable for most, but the Note 10 Plus is a great phone too.

    OnePlus 8 Pro

The OnePlus 8 Pro blew us away when we reviewed it, and the company is chasing Samsung and Apple on our best phones list for that very reason. While the OnePlus 8 is also an option, it’s missing many of the features we like about the Pro, which we outline below.

Screen: This 6.78-inch has the ability to impress you more than an iPhone for one simple reason: the ‘Fluid Display’ that sets the refresh rate to 120Hz. Not only does it make game look better, but simply scrolling the web looks smoother. You’ll also find nice upscaling and HDR10+ here, though false touches along the screen edges did give us trouble at times.

Battery life: If you need your phone battery to last all day long, the OnePlus 8 Pro achieves that, according to our tests. Its 4,510 battery capacity isn’t the biggest next to what Samsung’s phones are touting, but when setting the resolution to Full HD+, we did get by on a single charge very easily. We also took advantage of OnePlus (finally) adding wireless charging – in fact, it’s the fastest wirelessly charging device we’ve ever tested.

Camera: OnePlus has always lagged behind when it came to its cameras, though the OnePlus 8 Pro closes the gap. Its quad-lens array on the back of the phone allows for fine 48MP photos and a 3x optical zoom along with a 30x digital zoom. We can’t call it the best camera phone on the market, but it’s among the best cameras on an Android in this price range.

Mini verdict: It’s amazing that with Apple and Samsung’s top phones out of the way, we have the at-one-time-little-known OnePlus doing so well that it’s claimed a spot within the top 5 phones of 2020. While this version is more expensive than prior OnePlus phones, it doesn’t cut corners. You’re getting 5G, a 120Hz screen refresh rate, a great camera with 3x optical zoom, and super fast wireless charging. It’s a bit tall and only comes in one size (with the smaller OnePlus 8 a very different experience), and, to be expected, the camera is good but not good enough to rival the phones ranked ahead of it.

    iPhone 11 review

There’s a new hero for iPhone fans, with the iPhone 11 offering the best mix of features and price from Apple.

The specs here aren’t as impressive as they are on the iPhone 11 Pro or iPhone 11 Pro Max, but the trade-off in a lower price for this device still makes it a top-buy for many Apple fans.

Screen: This isn’t the best screen you’ll find on an iPhone, but it’s still a vibrant display that’s large enough to watch video on.

Battery life: The easiest way to describe battery life on the iPhone 11 is good, but not great. You’ll get around a day of usage from the iPhone 11, but it’s not as good as the Pro Max.

Camera: Expect a similar experience from the camera on the iPhone 11 as on the iPhone XR. If you want the best camera on an iPhone, you’ll want the Pro, but it’s still an impressive shooter on the rear of the standard 11.

Mini verdict: The iPhone 11 offers some of the best features from Apple in a more affordable package. Many will be happy with what the iPhone 11 can do, but others will want to look toward the high-spec iPhone 11 Pro or Pro Max to get the very best.

    Samsung Galaxy Note 10

Yeah, that’s right – Samsung now offers two versions of its S Pen-toting Note range, and this one comes with a lower spec than the one you’ve read about earlier in this list.

The Galaxy Note 10 is better for those with smaller hands, thanks to its much smaller display and smaller dimensions, but the battery life suffers a little for that.

Screen: This may be a Samsung Galaxy Note handset, but the display isn’t anywhere near as big as you’d expect. It’s a 6.3-inch display with an Infinity-O cutout for the selfie camera.

Battery life: The battery is where the Galaxy Note 10 begins to suffer a little as we found it regularly ran out before the end of a full day, but it’s enough for average usage.

Camera: The rear camera of the Galaxy Note 10 is similar to all other flagship Samsung phones released in 2019, and it’s good but not the best we’ve seen on a smartphone.

Mini verdict: The Galaxy Note 10 isn’t as high-spec as the Galaxy Note 10 Plus, but if you want a stylus on a smaller phone than the gargantuan Plus then you may want to opt for this.

    Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra

The Galaxy S20 Ultra is, indeed, ultra – billed as the ultimate Samsung phone thanks to top-of-the-line specs on paper. It’s an evolution of the max-specced Samsung Galaxy S10 5G from last year, though the Ultra’s execution isn’t the best.

Screen: The 6.9-inch Infinity-O AMOLED screen is the sharpest we’ve seen, coming in at a whopping 3200 x 1440 resolution (WQHD+) given the model’s slim bezels and the narrowest punch-hole we’ve ever seen. Plus its maximum refresh rate has been bumped up to 120Hz (though only if you bump the resolution down to FHD+) and touch sensor improved to 240Hz. It retains an in-screen fingerprint sensor, leaving the phone’s back unblemished.

Battery life: The Galaxy S20 Ultra has a massive 5,000mAh battery, which should help with the drains from the 120Hz and 5G connectivity, along with whatever Wireless PowerSharing and mundane binging or gaming you’re doing. It should last you a day or more, though we still haven’t hit the two-day battery life threshold yet.

Camera: The massive 108MP main shooter allows you to crop into photos after the fact without as much distortion. However, the appeal is limited. Serious creatives with time on their hands may get use out of this feature more than most people. While there is a 16MP ultra-wide lens roughly akin to that from last year’s phone, it’s the zoom capabilities that take the cake. The 100x ‘Space Zoom’ is mostly for showing off, as photos at that zoom are muddied – but scan it back out and it will blow other phones out of the water, especially since the competition typically maxes out at 10x. Here, see our massive S20 Ultra camera test for a deep dive.

Mini verdict: The S20 Ultra is truly cutting-edge, with a 100x ‘Space Zoom’ and, yes 5G, capabilities compatible with both mmWave and sub-6 networks. But you’ll pay a premium for the privilege: the phone starts at $1,399, and while its camera has unbelievable specs, like a 108MP sensor, it doesn’t always get exposure or autofocus right, leading us to recommend the S20 Plus.

    Xiaomi Mi Note 10

The Xiaomi Mi Note 10 is close to perfection, but it just doesn’t quite make that. That said, we gave it a 4.5 star review, and it’s a cheaper alternative to a lot of the other phones you’ll find on this list. For those two reasons, this may be your next smartphone.

Screen: The Xiaomi Mi Note 10 comes with a beautiful 6.47-inch display that has curved edges and a fingerprint sensor embedded into it. It’s a great size, it looks amazing and it adds to the overall sleek look of the phone.

Battery life: There’s a massive 5,260mAh battery inside the Xiaomi Mi Note 10, and while on paper that looks fantastic we found it to be about the same as your average phone. It’ll last you a full day of normal usage, but don’t expect a longer life than a full day.

Camera: Here’s the highlight of the Xiaomi Mi Note 10 – it comes with a 108MP camera. Not a typo, that’s a 108MP shooter. Saying it takes great pictures is an understatement. Some of the phone’s rear cameras feel a little inconsistent, but we’ve still found this phone to be one of the best camera phones around.

Mini verdict: The Xiaomi Mi Note 10 is a great choice if you’re looking for a cheaper Android phone that doesn’t lose out on much spec. The chipset isn’t fantastic so it won’t always offer the very best power out of any of the devices on this list, but considering its price and camera you may want to consider this.

    iPhone SE review

The iPhone SE 2020 is the sequel to the one-hand-friendly iPhone from 2016, and it takes the power and specs we loved from the iPhone 11 series and crams them into the design of the iPhone 7 and iPhone 8.

Screen: This new iPhone SE has a 4.7-inch screen borrowed from the iPhone 7 and iPhone 8, so it’s bigger than the original iPhone SE, but remains one-hand-friendly. That’s become important for people who have been demanding a smaller phone. This is the one to get, even if the resolution and bezel won’t wow anyone.

Battery life: As long as you aren’t a power user (who would likely opt for the iPhone 11 series anyway), then you’ll be OK with what Apple offers in terms of battery life. It’s not going to last you any longer than a day, though, with generally the same amount of power as we saw on the iPhone 8, which had a 1,821mAh battery capacity.

Camera: For the money, the iPhone SE 2020 takes perfectly fine photos in good light. You won’t notice much of a difference outside of it occasionally failing to nail perfect exposure levels and depth of field outdoors during the daytime. Dim the lights, however, and you’ll notice one glaring omission: the night mode that’s on the more powerful iPhones. That requires an upgrade to at least the iPhone 11.

Mini verdict: This isn’t Apple’s most powerful iPhone, but it’s the best value for people who want to stick with iOS 13 without paying through the nose. Its screen technology won’t wow you like an iPhone 11 Pro, and there’s just one camera on the back, but starting £419 means this is hard to be if you’re on a budget and don’t want to switch to Android.

Read more: iPhone SE 2020 review

The OnePlus 7T Pro was the best smartphone from the Chinese phone manufacturer. Now it has been usurped by the OnePlus 8 Pro, but the OnePlus 7T Pro is still a top choice and it’s cheaper than ever.

Screen: One of the highlights of the 7T Pro is its gorgeous, large display. It can compete with any other top-end handset you may be considering, and beats some of them when it comes to price.

Battery life: The battery performs admirably, matching the 7 Pro and perhaps even exceeding it in some regards. We found it would comfortably last a whole day on a single charge, even with extensive usage..

Camera: The OnePlus 7T Pro can take very good shots, but it doesn’t have the best camera we’ve seen on a smartphone – one of the small compromises to keep costs down. Still, you’re getting three powerful rear snappers and a selfie camera on the front.

Mini verdict: The OnePlus 7T Pro is an impressive handset that costs less than a lot of the competition, while offering an almost full suite of flagship features. Opt for the OnePlus 8 Pro if you want the full blown flagship experience.

    Samsung Galaxy S10

Previously, the Samsung Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10 Plus were our best smartphones in the world. That’s no longer the case with the introduction of the S20 range, but these are still two fantastic phones.

There’s a lot of high-spec here, and with the S20 range on the market the prices of these handsets have dropped significantly too.

Screen: The Super AMOLED display previously measured as the very best around and while that’s no longer the case the phone does still have a strong screen. Plus, there’s a fingerprint scanner embedded in the display.

Battery life: The battery life on the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10 Plus was an improvement over the S9 series, thanks to the larger batteries inside. They easily reach bedtime with double digits still left in the tank.

Camera: The trio of cameras on the S10 and S10 Plus are still impressive although they may not be the best on the market. The setup on each builds on the excellent S9 series by offering more features, shooting modes and overall clarity.

Mini verdict: The Galaxy S10 phones are no longer the powerhouse devices they once were, but if you’re looking for a slightly more affordable phone choice these will be a great choice for your next smartphone.

The Google Pixel 4 XL is a handsome phone in its simplicity, perfect for those looking for a handset with fewer features to be confused by.

It’s the photography prowess that really excites us about the Pixel 4 XL however, with this phone capable of producing stunning shots, even in the middle of the night.

Screen: The 6.3-inch display is colourful, detailed and noticeably smooth thanks to its 90Hz refresh rate, which doesn’t only make scrolling web pages and social fluid, but also helps when it comes to gaming. Win, win.

Battery life: This is admittedly the weak point of the Pixel 4 XL, with the phone just about last a day on a single charge, but the likelihood is you’ll need to top it up when you hit early evening.

Camera: There are just two cameras on the rear of the handset, but boy do they perform. Google’s improved its Night Sight mode and added in astro-photography chops to really wow you when the sun goes down.

Mini verdict: The Pixel 4 XL is the pragmatist’s flagship, eschewing the shimmering gradients and waterfall-edged displays of the Galaxy Note 10 or Mate 30 Pro in favour of bold-hued simplicity. If you like shooting photos without much fuss, this is for you.

    Honor View 20

The Honor View 20 is the best phone to come out of the Chinese brand, with a striking rear design (which may divide opinion), plenty of power under the hood, an impressive 48MP camera and a ‘punch-hole’ display which ushers in the post-notch revolution.

However, we’re sad to say, it now comes with a huge caveat. After Google suspended parent-company Huawei’s future access to Android Play Store and security updates, there are serious question marks over the future of Honor phones.

While Google and Huawei have promised to support phones currently on the market, it’s not clear how long they’ll receive Android updates or access to the Google Play Store, which would severely curtail their usefulness compared to the competition.

Screen: There’s a huge 6.4-inch display on the View 20, giving you plenty of space to play with. It’s the location of the front-facing, 25MP camera within the screen which is the real talking point though, as rather than appearing in a bezel or a notch which juts into the screen, it’s surround by screen. It’s different, but will it catch on?

Battery life: The Honor View 20 has a big 4,000mAh and the result is a battery which will comfortably last through an entire day and into the next on a single charge.

Camera: The View 20 is the world’s first smartphone to boast a 48MP rear camera, as the firm has used Sony’s new sensor to provide a camera which really packs a punch.

Mini verdict: An ultra-high-resolution camera and punch hole screen are the highlights on the Honor View 20, and they set a standard this year’s more expensive phones will need to match.

There may be new Galaxy S phones on the market, but Samsung hasn’t unveiled a replacement for the Galaxy S10e. That means this is still one of the most affordable Samsung flagship phones, and it’s remaining in this list.

The Galaxy S10e has many of the flagship features of its pricier Galaxy S10 and S10 Plus siblings, while offering a more palm-friendly size and a few compromises to help keep the cost down.

Screen: You don’t get a QHD resolution here, instead you’ll have to accept a Full HD+ 5.8-inch screen – but the Super AMOLED display provides plenty of colour and pop.

Battery life: We found battery life lasted a day on a single charge – which is what we’ve come to expect from phones – plus its wireless charging and Wireless PowerShare making topping it up, and you other devices, even easier.

Camera: The dual camera setup on the S10e isn’t quite as good as the triple cameras on the S10 and S10 Plus, but they’re still highly capable snappers producing quality photos with ease.

Mini verdict: It’s hard not to recommend the S10e to anyone who prefers a smaller phone. Size queens, look elsewhere – this smartphone is for folks who want to text and browse apps one-handed without compromising performance.

The Huawei P30 Pro was so close to being the best smartphone in 2019, and it’s just clinging onto this list in 2020. It has since been usurped by the Huawei P40 Pro, but we’ve left the P30 Pro in this list as it continues to have access to Google Mobile Services unlike the P40 range.

Screen: The large 6.47-inch screen on the P30 Pro may ‘only’ have a Full HD+ resolution, but it’s bright, clear and colourful providing an excellent canvas for your apps and games.

Battery life: There’s no worry when it comes to the P30 Pro potentially running out of juice, the battery life here is excellent. We regularly got to the end of the day with 30% or more left in the tank.

Camera: The cameras are the P30 Pro’s real party piece, providing staggeringly good 5x and 10x zoom, and a digital 50x zoom with gets you insanely close to objects far off in the distance. Its low-light capabilities are also top-notch.

Mini Verdict: The P30 Pro not only set a new standard for Huawei, it set a new standard for the mobile industry. Its cameras were quite simply astonishing in 2019, the design is eye-catching and the power plentiful. It’s a true flagship smartphone, and it’s much cheaper in 2020.

  • New iPhone 12 release date, leaks, price, news and what you need to know

New iPhone 12 release date, leaks, price, news and what you need to know

We’ll say it now: the iPhone 12 needs to be a huge change to Apple’s smartphone. The iPhone 11 range brought very little in terms of an upgrade. With new camera tweaks and some more power inside, they were modest updates to the popular iPhone range.

So what will the next iPhone – the first of a new decade – bring? Is Apple going to give us a truly new iPhone instead of an incremental upgrade?

The good news is that in the build up to the iPhone 11 launch we heard lots of rumors and leaks of a much-altered iPhone. These include the possibility of a 5G iPhone model, new cameras, a new design, a supercharged screen… if all of those rumors were referring instead to the iPhone 12, it could prove to be the big upgrade we’re hoping (and waiting) for.

We’ve mixed together all the latest leaks and updates on the new iPhone in the article below, and added in some thoughts on what we’re expecting, based on well over a decade of monitoring the growing rumor mill around the latest iPhone…

What is Apple doing in the world of phones before the iPhone 12? It just unveiled the new iPhone SE, which is a cheaper member of the company’s range of handsets. It features an A13 Bionic chipset, a Touch ID fingerprint scanner and a similar design to the iPhone 8.

Latest story: A massive leak has shown us what the iPhone 12 Pro Max could look like, and it’s… divisive.

    Cut to the chase

    • What is it? The new iPhone from Apple
    • When is it out? Almost certainly September
    • What will it cost? We’re expecting well over $700 / £700 for the base model

iPhone 12 release date and price

There isn’t any official iPhone 12 release date information as yet, but come on – we’re almost certain that we know when it will appear. Apple launches its new phones almost metronomically, and while every year there’s a rumor of it changing, it’s always held to a similar time.

Firstly, the new iPhone release date will almost certainly be September 2020 – and it’s always around the second week. So we’re going to guess that we’ll see Apple unveil the iPhone 12 on 8 September (or possibly 15 September if it wants to hit a later on-sale date).

You’ll be able to pick it up 10 days after that, so you’ll need a Friday off work if you’re desperate to get your hands on one.

That said, there’s a chance that the novel coronavirus outbreak in China may impact on the production of the next iPhone.

We had heard that development would be unaffected, and there are even now reports that the main manufacturing factories are fully staffed up. Plus, an exec at Foxconn (the main manufacturer of the iPhone) has said that company aims and hopes to make up for lost ground.

But elsewhere there are reports that the phone will be delayed until October or November, with Apple apparently not even having finalized the design yet (as of late March 2020). Some sources even say it could slip into 2021. Reuters has also talked about a delay being likely.

The latest release date information suggests Covid-19 might cause a delay, but only one of a few weeks. Apple seems to be able to release the new iPhone SE without many hitches, so it may also be able to provide the iPhone 12 without major delays too.

    iPhone 11 Pro

    The iPhone 11 Pro

When it comes to the iPhone 12 price, it’s likely to stay broadly in line with the current models. For reference, the iPhone 11 starts at $699 / £729 / AU$1,199, the iPhone 11 Pro starts at $999 / £1,049 / AU$1,749, and the iPhone 11 Pro Max starts at $1,099 / £1,149 / AU$1,899.

Having said that, one report suggests that the cost of materials for the iPhone 12 range might go up, which could mean even higher prices at retail.

Should I wait for the iPhone 12?

The iPhone 12 release date is still half a year away, if the September 2020 launch window stays constant, so you should probably consider the discounted iPhone 11 if you need a new iPhone in the next days, weeks or even months.

In an ordinary year, this is a long time to wait anyway – like, say, if you broke your phone and need a replacement as soon as possible – but it’s possible Apple’s launch date might be pushed back due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

A report has claimed that won’t be the case and it will launch on time, but it’s always possible that the outbreak’s disruption of supply chains and/or retail options inhibits the release.

In any case, if you need a new top-tier Apple phone now, you’re looking at the iPhone 11 or the higher-spec iPhone 11 Pro or iPhone 11 Pro Max. Here are the best prices in your region:

    iPhone 12 name

First things first: we’re pretty confident the 2020 Apple phones will be called the iPhone 12 series, not the 11S or similar thanks to an industry analyst (with a great track record) saying as such.

That’s why we’re calling it the iPhone 12, even though Apple hasn’t confirmed this name. Others might be calling it the iPhone 2020 or the ‘new iPhone’ – but we’re not thinking that will be the moniker Apple plumps for.

    iPhone 12 design

The iPhone 12 could have an angular design, like the iPhone 5, according to a huge design leak, and if true this new look could be hugely divisive. On one side it looks a lot like the iPad Pro models, so professional and sleek, but it’s also likely quite uncomfortable to hold too.

One of the upcoming phones might lack a notch according to analysts, with the front-facing camera potentially set to be embedded under the screen instead. If this happens we’d expect it to be the most expensive iPhone 12 model that has this feature – likely the iPhone 12 Pro Max, or whatever it launches as.

The first design leak suggests the phone will have a notch though, just a smaller one to before.

    iPhone 11 Pro Max

    The iPhone 11 Pro Max

Another leak suggests Apple is developing new Face ID tech which will lead to a redesigned and potentially slimmer notch. Allegedly, the company is trying out several combinations, including ones that minimize the front-facing optics so much that they fit in the top bezel.

Indeed, a leak from Jon Prosser (a reputable leaker) points to four iPhone 12 models, all of which would have smaller notches. Additionally, the smallest of these models would apparently have a 5.4-inch screen, and that along with a 6.1-inch model are said to have an aluminum body, while another 6.1-inch model and a 6.7-inch one (the iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max) are said to use stainless steel.

One report has also suggested Face ID will be dropped entirely in favor of an under screen fingerprint scanner, though this seems unlikely.

We might get more than just a notch reduction or removal, with Kuo also saying that he expects the metal frame to be more like the iPhone 4’s frame, suggesting it won’t be curved like on current models. He also says that overall the design is likely to be “significantly” different to current iPhone models.

Indeed, sources speaking to Bloomberg claim similar, though make comparisons to the design of the iPad Pro, saying that the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max will have flat stainless steel edges,  more sharply rounded corners, and flat screens. They also point to smaller notches on all four rumored models.

Then again, another leak suggests that the designs will actually be staying much the same, other than some differences in the camera layout and the dimensions. Based on this leak, the 5.4-inch iPhone could be around 131mm tall, the 6.1-inch could be around 147mm, and the 6.7-inch model could be slightly taller than the 158mm iPhone 11 Pro Max.

However, it’s also said to be thinner, apparently coming in at 7.4mm thick, while the iPhone 11 Pro Max is 8.1mm thick.

In any case, the leak above from Kuo affirmed several much-rumored trends, like the iPhone 12 Pro versions adding a time-of-flight sensor, the budget flagship adding a telephoto lens, and series-wide support for 5G as well as finally switching to USB-C.

It might not just be the camera that’s built into the screen either, as Apple is also rumored to be equipping its next phones with an in-screen fingerprint scanner.

    iPhone 11 Pro

This would be a big change for the brand, since current models don’t have a fingerprint scanner at all. That said, if the camera really is in-screen then it might not be possible to have all the Face ID sensors, so it could be that this fingerprint scanner will replace Face ID, though we’re not convinced Apple would go that far.

As for colors, we’ve heard a rumor that the iPhone 12 will drop the forest green of its predecessor for a navy blue – a svelte hue more in line with dress colors, for sure. But like the divide between the ‘fun’ pastel colors in the standard iPhone 11 and the classier hues in the iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max, we might not see the blue come to the lower-priced model.

A new display for the iPhone 12?

One or more 2020 iPhone models might also have a 120Hz refresh rate, up from 60Hz on current models. This – which has been rumored by a reputable leaker – could make interactions feel smoother. This is a claim we’ve now heard more than once, and some phones already have higher refresh rates than 60Hz, as do some iPads, so this isn’t unbelievable.

The screen sizes could be changing too, with respected Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo saying that the iPhone 12 Pro Max could have a 6.7-inch screen (up from 6.5 inches on the iPhone 11 Pro Max), and the iPhone 12 Pro could have a 5.45-inch screen (down from 5.8 inches on the iPhone 11 Pro).

He adds that the standard iPhone 12 will apparently stay at 6.1 inches, but will get upgraded from LCD to OLED. That’s a claim we’ve heard more than once, and would mean all three 2020 iPhones would have an OLED screen.

Another source has broadly agreed, but said to expect a 5.4-inch screen on the iPhone 12 Pro. They also said that the two Pro models will use a form of OLED that’s both thinner and cheaper to produce than the screens used in the iPhone 11 Pro range. That could mean lower prices, but we wouldn’t count on it.

    iPhone 11 Pro

The side of the iPhone 11 Pro

Elsewhere we’ve heard a similar selection of sizes, but that Apple could launch four new models in September. According to an analyst, Apple will launch a 6.7-inch phone, a 5.4-inch one, and two 6.1-inch ones.

They don’t go into any more detail but that suggests there will be both a top-end and slightly lower end model in a 6.1-inch size, if this claim is accurate.

And it might well be, because it’s claim that we’ve now heard again, this time from reputable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who adds that all four models will have OLED screens and 5G, but that one of the 6.1-inch models and the 5.4-inch one will have two rear cameras, while the other two models will have three.

Jon Prosser (another leaker) agrees with all of that (other than the OLED bit, which isn’t mentioned one way or another), but adds that the two top-end models will have a LiDAR scanner as well as three camera lenses.

We’ve also heard that at least some iPhone 12 models could have thinner, cheaper and more energy-efficient screens than the iPhone 11 range. This in turn may allow the phones themselves to be thinner, as well as lasting longer between charges.

    iPhone 12 specs and camera

Another big change could take the form of 5G, which has been widely rumored for the iPhone 12. Kuo even says that he thinks all three models will support 5G. We fully expect at least one of them will, given that multiple sources have suggested as much and that a number of other phones already support 5G.

That could well be supported by both a custom-made 5G antenna, an a 5nm A14 Bionic processor inside the iPhone 12 – what that means for the average consumer is an iPhone with an even longer battery life and more power than ever. That would be rather impressive, given the iPhone battery life is currently the best we’ve ever seen from Apple.

The RAM could also get a boost, with analysts claiming that the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max will have 6GB of the stuff, up from 4GB on their predecessors – though the standard iPhone 12 will apparently stick with 4GB. This is something we’ve now heard again, so it may well be true.

The chipset seems ready to wow too, as an A14 Bionic leaked benchmark showed it had a single-core and multi-score score that was ahead of the Snapdragon 865, the processor you’ll find in almost all Android flagships in 2020.

And the iPhone 12 might also support the new 802.11ay specification, which could allow it to share content at speeds of at least 20-30Gbps. So in every sense this phone is likely to be fast.

The iPhone 12 might also get a camera upgrade, with a laser-powered 3D camera rumored for inclusion. This would be on the back, and while only one rumor mentions lasers, another also talks about a depth-sensing snapper, while one mentions 3D sensing, so this might well be something we see in some form.

We’ve also now seen a leaked sketch showing four rear lenses on the iPhone 12 Pro. This sketch supposedly came from a build of iOS 14 and is backed up by lots of sources.

    iPhone 12 camera

Three of the lenses look like those on the iPhone 11 Pro, if perhaps slightly bigger, but the new fourth lens looks like the LiDAR scanner found on the iPad Pro 2020. This can accurately judge distances and therefore depth, so it’s in line with the rumors above and would allow for improved augmented reality and Portrait mode.

We’ve since heard specific mention of a LiDAR scanner being included on the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max (alongside three lenses), while the basic iPhone 12 is said to have two camera lenses and no LiDAR scanner. These claims have been made by multiple sources.

Elsewhere, one source says the iPhone 12 might have a 64MP main camera, over the 12MP snapper on the previous few versions, which would be a huge upgrade. This leak also suggests that the phone will have multiple lenses that support night mode shooting, and the ultra-wide snapper could have a dedicated macro mode.

Another report from Fast Company cites sources close to production of the phone and says these same features are in development. One of the sources for this rumor claims the two top models would get this, along with a triple-lens camera, while the two lower end ones would just get a dual-lens camera without 3D sensing.

Elsewhere, we’ve heard that the top end iPhone 12 (likely the iPhone 12 Pro Max) will get a new image stabilization tech called ‘sensor-shift’, which would allow the sensor to move in order to counteract camera shake.

A recent EU ruling may also mean future iPhones won’t be able to use Lightning cables in Europe. That may force Apple to switch the connector on future phones to USB-C, and while it’s not clear yet whether this will be the case for the iPhone 12 it may be something to consider.

Another report from Chinese publication Caifa news also suggests Apple and other manufacturers may soon use GaN power adapters. These are currently used by Xiaomi, and allow for fast-charging speeds up to 65 watts.

There’s no gurantee this will debut on the iPhone 12 – or any future iPhone for that matter – but it may mean we see an improved fast-charging experience along the line.

Of course, the iPhone 12 will also use new software, namely iOS 14, and while we don’t know much about this yet, one leak suggests it could feature a new, iPadOS-inspired app switching screen.

What we want to see from the new iPhone

The iPhone 11 range is a strong – but safe, and thus a bit dull – upgrade for Apple. So for the iPhone 12 we want to see bigger, riskier changes, such as the following.

    1. Exciting new features

First things first – the new iPhone needs to be good. Brilliant. Better than expected. We’re talking things that we haven’t even thought of. Things that we’re hoping Apple’s brightest minds are currently dreaming up in the company’s labs.

This might sound like a very vague request, but Apple is one of the biggest companies in the world and if any brand could make a decent folding handset, or one with detachable VR glasses, it’s Cook’s Crew.

Because a tweaked design and improved specs are expected, ordinary, and no longer enough as consumers are holding onto their handsets for longer than ever. Come on Apple, give us something mind-blowing.

    2. A new design

    iPhone 11 Pro

The back of the iPhone 11 Pro

Perhaps the thing we want most from the iPhone 12 is a new design. Apple has been rolling out basically the same design for several years now, ever since it refreshed the look with the iPhone X.

Sure, some things get tweaked, but the core is the same. And it’s starting to look a bit dated. That’s thanks mostly to the large notch, which might be necessary for all the camera components needed for Face ID, but which we’d like to see shrunk or removed if possible.

Beyond that, we’d really like a whole new look. There’s not too much wrong with the rest of the iPhone 11 Pro’s design, but it certainly feels overly familiar at this point.

    3. An in-screen everything

We’d like the iPhone 12 to have an all-screen front, and one way to achieve that is to move the front-facing camera under the display. If Apple can effectively achieve that, it’s sure to impress.

While it’s on, we’d like Apple to re-add a fingerprint scanner, for those times when Face ID isn’t working quite as slickly as it should. But we want this in the screen too, or better yet, make the whole screen one big fingerprint scanner, as it has been rumored Apple might be planning for a future phone.

    4. A higher refresh rate

    iPhone 11 Pro

    The iPhone 11 Pro

One way some companies are further improving their displays is by upping the refresh rate from the standard 60Hz. The OnePlus 7 Pro for example has an optional 90Hz refresh rate, while the Razer Phone 2 goes up to 120Hz.

This can help make interactions with the handset and animations feel silky smooth, so we’d like to see Apple offer a higher refresh rate of its own. It’s not out of the question, especially as some iPad Pro models have a refresh rate of up to 120Hz. Indeed, exactly that refresh rate has been rumored for the upcoming iPhones.

    5. Further battery boosts

For the first time in years, with the iPhone 11 range it feels like Apple has really prioritized battery life in its phones, but we want the company to go even further with the iPhone 12. Or at the very least not go backwards.

We’re still waiting on an iPhone that can comfortably last two days, and we’d like the iPhone 12 (or at least the iPhone 12 Pro Max) to be it.

    6. 5G support

    Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus 5G

    Samsung’s Galaxy S10 Plus 5G

Apple is behind when it comes to 5G, as none of the iPhone 11 range offer it, while rival handsets like the Samsung Galaxy S20 family and OnePlus 7 Pro 5G do.

Apple’s lack of support isn’t a big deal right now, as 5G coverage is still very sparse in most countries, but by the time the iPhone 12 launches it will be more widely available and a large number of other handsets will support it, so it will be time for Apple to jump on board.

The good news is that it’s heavily rumored that 2020’s iPhones will support 5G, so this is one thing we’re likely to get.

    7. A lower price

We ask for this every year with new iPhones and this year we actually kind of got it, with the base iPhone 11 starting at less than the iPhone XR did. So it’s actually not impossible that we could see an even lower price – or a reduced price for the rest of the range – with the iPhone 12.

We wouldn’t count on it, but Apple’s more affordable phones are typically its best-selling in recent years, so there should be some incentive to cut costs where possible.

  • Streets of Rage 4 gets a release date – and there’s a retro surprise for older fans

Some of us may be stuck inside until at least the end of the month, but gamers will soon be able to hit the streets – figuratively speaking – when Streets of Rage 4 releases on April 30 for PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC. Oh, and Xbox Game Pass subscribers will get it on launch day for free.

Streets of Rage 4 co-developers Guard Crush Games and Lizardcube (makers of the fabulous Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap) made the announcement alongside a new trailer, which reveals a first look at the game’s new Battle Mode.

Last seen in Streets of Rage 2 and 3, Battle Mode is where you can settle feuds with your friends – maybe you accidentally punched them in the face during the co-op campaign. And if the fourth iteration of Streets of Rage is anything like its predecessors, you’ll definitely smack each other about a bit – by accident, of course.

    Smells like nostalgia

The premise for Streets of Rage 4 is simple: fight your way through a city full of threatening goons as you attempt to clean up the streets. You can gang up with a friend or go it alone.

Gamers who played the original games on Sega Genesis will be delighted to hear that Streets of Rage 4 also brings back the timeless pixel-art characters from Streets of Rage 1 and 2, in all their retro-fighting glory. Your ears are in for a treat, too, as the widely-renowned, head-bobbing, electronic dance soundtracks return.

It’s been 25 long years since the last entry in the Streets of Rage series, but you can finally reunite with Axel, Blaze and the excellently-named Adam when the retro beat ‘em up sequel returns for the tempting price of $24.99.

How to watch new Simpsons movie: stream Maggie’s Playdate with Destiny online free

The Simpsons is one of the jewels in the Disney Plus crown and fans are being rewarded for their loyalty with the release of a fresh short-film starring their favorite Springfield family. Read on and we’ll explain how to watch The Simpsons: Maggie’s Playdate with Destiny today – stream the new Simpsons movie wherever you are with the help of our guide.

This isn’t the first Simpsons episode to track the antics of Maggie, though. Back in 2012, we got treated to something similar in the form of ‘The Longest Daycare’ short. And before that, fans of the show learnt she was the silent assassin who (nearly) killed Mr. Burns in a famous two-part episode with eerie and hilarious parallels to the O.J Simpson trial.

Apologies if that ruined 1995 for you, but surely that can’t class as a spoiler at this stage?

Whatever the case, it’s safe to say that we’re seriously excited about the release of the new Simpsons Maggie movie onto Disney Plus – which is currently offering a FREE 7-day trial and costs just $6.99/£5.99 a month otherwise. With that in mind, here’s how to watch new Simpsons short Maggie’s Playdate with Destiny online from nearly anywhere in the world.

How to watch the Simpsons online: stream Maggie’s Playdate with Destiny online for free

This is the best bit – Disney Plus now has the new Simpsons Maggie movie available to stream across all of its core services – including the US, UK and Australia.

That means there’s no waiting around for global audiences – which has regrettably been the case with previous Disney Plus exclusives like new Pixar flick Onward and even Frozen 2.

It’s doubly good because when you take out such wait times, Disney Plus has quickly emerged as one of the very best – and best value – TV streaming services on the planet. With a catalogue full of Pixar hits, Marvel epics and the entire Simpsons back catalogue, it’s got pretty much every you need to survive a lockdown and still stay firmly in love with your TV.

Better still, can get a 7-day FREE TRIAL to Disney Plus, meaning you can enjoy the new Simpsons Maggie movie and all of the service’s other content without paying anything! Binge as much as you want and it won’t cost you a penny, provided you cancel in time.

Disney Plus has apps for iOS and Android (of course), and is available to watch online via the likes of Amazon Fire TV Stick, PS4, Xbox One and Roku streaming devices.
