The best iPhone 8 Plus deals and UK contracts in November 2019

Apple’s newer flagships are, well very expensive. So for those wanting to land a phablet sized iPhone at a lower price, iPhone 8 Plus deals could be the ideal way to go.

If you want one of the newest large screened Apple smartphones, but the new iPhone 11 deals make your head spin, then the 8 Plus will be the one for you.

So how are iPhone 8 Plus prices looking. On average, if you shop wisely (using our price comparison chart below) you’ll save yourself around £300 if you go for this handset over the iPhone X. We’ve seen monthly tariffs as low as the £25 region if you’re prepared to stick a wedge down upfront.

Still feeling a bit overwhelmed by these prices? Don’t forget that iPhone 8 deals are also available if you’d prefer the smaller smartphone, along with the smaller prices. And you can save £10 on the upfront cost of any iPhone 8 Plus deal at Mobiles.co.uk by using the voucher code 10OFF at the checkout.

iPhone 8 Plus price: how much does it cost?

A mighty £699. That’s how much the 64GB iPhone 8 Plus will cost you in the UK according to the RRP. That might seem like a lot but that’s one hundred pounds cheaper than when it first came out.

Need more memory? Then your only other option is spending an extra £150 and grabbing a £849 256GB iPhone 8 Plus.

If you opt to buy the iPhone 8 Plus upfront without a contract you will save money in the long run, but of course £699 is a lot of money to pay. If you can afford it though it the way to go once you pair it with a cheap SIM only deal.

This is the iPhone you want if you can’t quite afford the iPhone X or iPhone XS Max. It’s got the larger battery, same powerful innards and strong camera. If you don’t mind the poorer screen, it’s a good option – and the screen is still a beaut. And we prefer it quite a lot more to the regular iPhone 8.

But that doesn’t mean they’re not available anymore. Just expect to pay slightly more for the privilege of a full physical keyboard and don’t be surprised if it reaches the point where this phone is only available SIM-free.

But despite the phone slowly disappearing, this is still an excellent phone and if you can find an affordable Blackberry Keyone deal it will treat those with a love of nostalgia well.

Equipped with an updated version of that keyboard, Full HD screen and 12MP main camera, the Blackberry KEYone runs off Android. It may not quite be a match for the likes of the Samsung Galaxy Note 9, but it’s not far off and it’s way cheaper.

  • The best Nokia 3310 deals and prices in November 2019

The best Nokia 3310 deals and prices in November 2019

The reboot of the iconic Nokia 3310 phone has generated a lot of buzz since it was sensationally revealed in 2017. Do not underestimate the nostalgia for the simpler, cheaper mobile phones – or for Snake!

A growing number of retailers – including Amazon and Argos – sell the Nokia 3310, and we can tell you who has it cheapest below. And it’s now finally available on contract, too, although we think it makes far more sense just to buy the handset and grab a separate SIM only deal.

If you decide that you want something a bit more advanced than the Nokia 3310, then try our selection of the best SIM-free phones and deals or check out the Nokia 3 and Nokia 5.

The 2017 Nokia 3310 is looking like a great purchase for anyone looking for a spare mobile to take camping, or to festivals, thanks to its super-low cost and long life between battery charges. Maybe you just don’t need all the bells and whistles of a modern smartphone, or perhaps just want to bag a cheap mobile phone deal.

Where can I buy the new Nokia 3310 SIM-free?

Vodafone was the first big network to start stocking the new Nokia 3310, before other major retailers – such as Amazon, Argos and Tesco Direct – turned up to the 90s themed party. If you’ve got fifty pounds on you, you can get hold of a Nokia 3310 and still get change in return.

Once you’ve picked out the handset you want to buy, you can then head to our SIM only deals page to buy a cheap SIM to pop in it with prices starting from well less than a fiver per month.

Best Nokia 3310 deals on contract

We waited aaaaaaaages after the Nokia 3310’s release to see some contract plans, and now it feels like we shouldn’t have bothered. Although we’ve seen tariffs for as little as a tenner a month with nothing to pay upfront, we can’t imagine why you’d bother committing yourself to a lengthy contract, when you can just buy the handset cheap as chips and get a more flexible SIM or pay-as-you go price.

Is the Nokia 3310 any good?

A new Nokia 3310 was always going to make misty-eyed a generation whose youth was spent whiling away hours on Snake. But there’s more to this phone than purely nostalgia. Its featherweight design, convenient number keys, marathon battery and ridiculous price is going to appeal to people who just want a very cheap handset for festivals, holidays and emergencies. And did we mention Snake?

For those people who expect their smartphones to be kitted out with high resolution displays and industry leading cameras, clearly the Nokia 3310 is the polar opposite. Read more about the pros and cons in our full Nokia 3310 review.

What colours are available for the new Nokia 3310?

The new Nokia 3310 is available in a range of colours. Depending on where you buy it from, there are options in blue, black, red, yellow and grey.

  • Hackers use a photograph of a fingerprint to bypass phone security

It seems that using your fingerprints as a method of unlocking your phone might not be quite as secure as you first though. All it takes to trick a fingerprint reader is a photograph of a print, a special app, and some relatively cheap hardware.

Chinese hackers say they have devised a method for bypassing biometric security on smartphones in just 20 minutes. As Tom’s Guide reports, using photographs of fingerprints left on glass, the X-Lab team from Tencent Security showed how it was possible to create cloned physical fingerprints that were sophisticated enough to fool fingerprint scanners.

The team gave a demonstration at the GeekPwn 2019 hacking conference in Shanghai. During it, team leader Chen Yu invited an audience member to touch a glass, and the resulting fingerprints were then photographed.

Using a specially developed app, the photograph was processed and a physical model created using hardware that was not publicly revealed. The exact method used has not been explained, but it is assumed that some sort of advanced 3D printer was used. The technique was used to successfully trick three smartphones and two other machines with fingerprint readers.

    Time to wear gloves

As if the ability to bypass the biometric security was not worrying enough, it gets worse. The security breach can be executed in a mere 20 minutes, and it is far from expensive. Speaking to Chinese media, Yu revealed that hardware costing just $140 (about £110, AU$200) was needed, meaning that it’s something that’s hardly limited to being used by large organisation or rich individuals.

Time to remember to wipe away any evidence you might leave behind after yourself, perhaps… or just take to wearing gloves all of the time! You might also want to consider switching to a different security mechanism on your phone, such as facial recognition, or just a really lengthy PIN.

  • NHS gets millions to move to digital prescriptions

The government has announced a fresh batch of funding to the tune of £26 million in order to help hospitals upgrade to digital prescriptions rather than handwritten efforts.

Some 25 NHS trusts will receive the money which aims to make all sorts of efficiency improvements, not least of which will be reducing medication errors by up to 30% compared to the old paper-based way of doing things. The move will also be a considerable time-saver, freeing up staff to do other things.

This is part of the goal for the NHS to get electronic prescriptions in place across all providers, and the £26 million to be given out in 2020 is the second dollop from a total pot of £78 million to speed up the rollout of such electronic systems over the next three years.

Edward Argar, who is Minister for Health, commented: “Electronic prescriptions in our hospitals will not only do away with old fashioned paper prescriptions but can help prevent avoidable and potentially catastrophic medication errors.”

An electronic system will also mean that NHS staff can get quick access to information on prescribed medicines for any particular patient. And the government further observes that it will facilitate a single electronic record which will reduce any duplication or other time-wasting aspects concerning information gathering.

    Secure storage

However, as Matt Eckersall – Region Director, EMEA West, SUSE – warns, there are some potentially tricky aspects to this part of the government’s plans.

Eckersall observes: “Building up a complete, single electronic record will come with its own challenges, including how to handle the rapid increase in digital data generated and how to store it in a safe, cost-efficient manner.

“While the NHS already collects a huge amount of data, including sensitive and personally identifiable patient information, this new development will require the organisation to carefully consider its existing data storage infrastructure. Data centre storage can be expensive, encouraging many organisations to look to cloud platforms instead.

“Although the NHS will be used to relying on the cloud to some extent, this may need to increase if the NHS is to successfully handle this huge influx of digital data while ensuring information security, integrity and processing performance without breaking the bank.”

And on the subject of cost-effective storage, he adds: “The open source community is providing the solutions to meet this demand for affordable storage. Organisations like the NHS can turn to easy-to-manage, future-proofed open source solutions that provide unlimited scalability, such as software-defined storage.”

  • Apple’s Mac Pro 2019 launch date could be soon – here’s why

The 2019 Apple Mac Pro launch is apparently imminent, with a recent device filing through the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) being made public. This would line up with general expectations of a late 2019 release for the new workstation.

It’s admittedly unclear exactly when the new Mac Pro could launch, but judging by previous late-year Apple Mac releases, particularly the iMac Pro of 2017, this new model could launch as late as mid-December. The iMac Pro didn’t hit retailers until December 14 of that year.

So, we could be another six weeks out from a Mac Pro 2019 release date, if Apple follows a similar pattern to 2017.

    A new accessory color scheme

Thanks to data mining discovered by software developer Steve Troughton-Smith and reported by AppleInsider, we now also know that the Mac Pro is likely to come with accessories in all-new colors.

Images within the code of the latest macOS 10.15.1 release reveal a newly-colored Magic Keyboard and Magic Trackpad: black keys and a black tracking surface on the silver aluminum keyboard deck and trackpad base, respectively.

These accessories were apparently on display during the Mac Pro debut earlier this year, but are now all but confirmed, thanks to some clutch data mining. This also lines up with the Apple Pro Display XDR color scheme, as well as the clean silver of the Mac Pro workstation tower itself.

At any rate, expect to see some shiny new colors when the 2019 Mac Pro finally releases, which we could be waiting another six weeks for – hopefully at most.

    • Will we see any big Mac deals on Black Friday? Fingers crossed
