  • ‘Dying of the Light’ Edit Protested by Paul Schrader, Anton Yelchin, Nicolas Refn, and Nicolas Cage

‘Dying of the Light’ Edit Protested by Paul Schrader, Anton Yelchin, Nicolas Refn, and Nicolas Cage

    Dying of the Light protest

Yesterday we saw the trailer for Dying of the Light, the new film directed by Paul Schrader from his own script, with Nicolas Cage and Anton Yelchin starring as intelligence agents. But there’s some troubled backstory to the movie, and it isn’t really Schrader’s film now. He was locked out of the edit as the producers took over final cut and added their own score. Nicolas Winding Refn, who is on the film as exec producer, called the process “artistic disrespect.” Now the creators have lodged a creative Dying of the Light protest.

Schrader can’t talk about it because of the non-disparagement clause in his contract. So he, Refn, and his stars have posed wearing shirts bearing the text of that contract. Those images accompany a statement from the director, released today.

    dying-of-the-light-poster

Schrader posted the pics and statement to Facebook. I’m curious to hear more of both sides of this story, but it’s obvious that it’ll be a long time before Schrader is willing and/or able to talk in more detail.

We lost the battle. “Dying of the Light,” a film I wrote and directed, was taken away from me, redited, scored and mixed without my imput. Yesterday Grindstone (a division of Lionsgate) released the poster and the trailer. They are available on line. Here we are, Nick Cage, Anton Yelchin, Nic Refn and myself, wearing our “non-disparagement” T shirts. The non-disparagement clause in an artist’s contract gives the owners of the film the right to sue the artist should the owner deem anything the artist has said about the film to be “derogatory.” I have no comment on the film or others connected with the picture.

Star Wars Bits: Episode VII 3 Weeks From Completion, How Many Movies Are Coming? Plus Posters, Rumors, Rebels

    Chris Skinner Falcon

The circle is now complete. In three weeks, J.J. Abrams will be done with principal photography on Star Wars Episode VII. In this edition of Star Wars Bits read about that milestone, and get info on the following items:

    • The new London ILM president suggests we’ll only get six Star Wars movies over the next ten years.
    • Could Darth Bane be the villain of Star Wars Episode VII?
    • John Boyega tweets a very curious image of an R2 unit.
    • Star Wars Rebels set a ratings record on Disney XD.
    • Read the titles and credits for Star Wars Rebels episodes 7 and 10.
    • Star Wars Rebels character Zare Leonis is NOT John Boyega’s Star Wars Episode VII character.
    • Get $190 worth of Star Wars comics for whatever price you want to pay.

Speaking at the opening of their new London Industrial Light and Magic, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy offered an update on the production of Star Wars Episode VII. Variety was on the scene:

We are standing here within three weeks of finishing ‘Episode VII. This continues a long tradition of filming ‘Star Wars’ in London, going back to 1976. It is remarkable this all came together in less than two years. ‘Star Wars’ is filmmaking that inspires technical excellence.

In the same article, they talk to the president of the new ILM office, Lynwen Brennan, who talked about job security six Star Wars movies in 10 years gives everyone. Now, we’d heard the plan was a Star Wars movie per year starting in 2015. Does this mean things have already been scaled back? We’ve reached out to Lucasfilm for confirmation on this point but it means one of three things:

    1. The plan for a movie per year starting in 2015 has been scaled back to give each film more time.
    2. The years before the release of Star Wars Episode VII are being counted in the ten.
    3. Lucasfilm hasn’t committed to any movies after the next six, being Episodes 7, 8, 9, the Gareth Edwards spin-off, the Josh Trank spin-off and one more. Anything after that is still up for discussion.

I’m leaning towards number three but, it’s worth thinking about.

Also – that new ILM office has one of Olly Moss’s Star Wars poster up as an image:

We still have no idea who is playing, or the name, of the bad guy (or guys/girls) in Star Wars Episode VII. A rumored description recently revealed some details and Star Wars 7 News has a pretty interesting argument that Darth Bane, a character from the Expanded Universe, could be the villain in the film. There’s a distinct effort to avoid the EU, which goes against the idea, but he appeared in The Clone Wars, so he’s canon. It’s an fun theory.

This beautiful 24 x 36 inch screenprint by Chris Skinner is currently on sale at the Hero Complex Gallery. It’s a timed release through October 22 so anyone can get it. Click here for more info and to order.

John Boyega may not be on Twitter anymore, but he is on Instagram and he just put up this image. I have no idea what the emblem says, but that’s obviously the point. Very curious.

Though it premiered with a mini-movie, this week’s episode of Star Wars Rebels was technically considered the premiere. And it did great. Over 1 million people watched the show on Disney XD, making it the biggest series debut in that network’s history.

The new issue of Star Wars Insider, via Making Star Wars, has the titles and credits for the seventh through tenth episodes of Star Wars Rebels. Nothing super surprising or revealing there but worth reading.

One of the characters we’ll soon meet in Star Wars Rebels is Zare Leonis, a young, black Stormtrooper in training. Many suggested this meant he was somehow related to John Boyega’s Star Wars Episode VII character (who is also black and, potentially, a stormtrooper). Well, a new article on StarWars.com about Zare, and how he fits into a new series of novels, pretty much settles that argument. He’s a totally separate character whose backstory was primarily created by author Jason Fry. Here’s an image of one of the novels, head there for more.

Finally, this is super cool. Humble is offering an insane bundle of Star Wars comic books for whatever price you want to pay. Head there to pick it up.

  • CBS Starts Its Own Streaming Service

CBS Starts Its Own Streaming Service

    CBS All Access

Just in time to really get cord-cutters excited after this week’s news of HBO’s plan to offer internet-only subscriptions, CBS is launching its own all-access digital service. In fact, the project is called CBS All Access, and it launches today at CBS.com and via iOS and Android apps. Pricing info and more details are below.

CBS CEO Les Moonves said a bunch of jargon-y, business-type stuff,

CBS All Access is another key step in the company’s long-standing strategy of monetizing our local and national content in the ways that viewers want it. This new subscription service will deliver the most of CBS to our biggest fans while being additive to the overall ecosystem. Across the board, we continue to capitalize on technological advances that help consumers engage with our world-class programming, and we look forward to serving our viewers in this new and exciting way.

    Yeah, ok, so what’s the bottom line? Subscription is $5.99 per month, with access to full seasons of 15 primetime shows the day after they air; and currently past seasons of eight series. (The Good WifeBlue Bloods, and Survivor are in that list.);

More important, there’s ad-free access to more than 5,000 episodes of classic series such as Star TrekCheersMacGyverTwin Peaks, and CSI: Miami. Streaming versions of special broadcasts like the Grammys will have additional content, and the service will stream Big Brother live when it returns in 2015.

The big attraction there is the ad-free offer, which competes against Hulu pretty nicely. And while you may not be interested in the CBS offerings, or perhaps already have access to all the stuff you want, this could prove to be a provocation that sets other companies in motion with their own service. Having this and HBO hit within days of one another is not a minor turn of events.

Sequel Bits: ‘That’s What I’m Talking About,’ ‘The Terminator,’ ‘Fast & Furious 7′

    thats-what-im-talking-about-logo

The art above is the production logo for That’s What I’m Talking About, the new film from Richard Linklater. We’re stretching the definition of “sequel bits” just a little here, but the movie has been called a “spiritual sequel” to Dazed and Confused. Linklater started production on the movie this week, and that image is in celebration of the ongoing production.

    • The Woman in Black – Angel of Death gets a new US release date,
    • James Wan talks about Fast & Furious 7,
    • Producers suggest there’s a plan for a new Saw film in 2016,
    • A new Horrible Bosses 2 poster goes online,
    • As does a Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb poster,
    • And James Cameron talks Terminator.

The That’s What I’m Talking About image comes from producer Megan Ellison, who announced the shoot via Twitter.

The film features a college freshman showing up to school and getting acquainted with the school’s baseball team. Blake Jenner (Glee) and Wyatt Russell (22 Jump Street) star, and  Zoey Deutch, Will Brittain, and Glen Powell are in the cast.

The Lego Movie co-writer and co-director Chris Miller posted a note to Twitter about the announcement of release dates for the new Lego films. We’ll let you wonder if he’s joking about this Lego Movie 2 title, or if that could actually be the name of the film. Knowing these guys, it could go either way.

I am also super pumped for the NINJAGO movie and TH2 L2GO MOVI2 which were already announced and are going to be really special

Yahoo has a new Horrible Bosses 2 poster. The November 26 release stars Jason Bateman, Charlie Day, Jason Sudeikis, Jennifer Aniston, Jamie Foxx, Kevin Spacey, Chris Pine and Christoph Waltz, most of whom are seen on this poster.

Fed up with answering to higher-ups, Nick, Dale and Kurt decide to become their own bosses by launching their own business in the sequel. But a slick investor soon pulls the rug out from under them. Outplayed and desperate, and with no legal recourse, the three would-be entrepreneurs hatch a misguided plan to kidnap the investor’s adult son and ransom him to regain control of their company.

And here’s the new Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb poster, which features the late Robin Williams.

    NATM3_VerB_sm

Fandango has that poster. The film also stars Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson, Ricky Gervais, Ben Kingsley and Rebel Wilson. Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb opens on December 19.

Release of The Woman in Black – Angel of Death has been pulled forward from January 30 2015 to January 2 2015. That makes it the first official release of the new year, as it is currently the only film set to open on that date. Jeremy Irvine and Helen McCrory star in the film directed by Tom Harper from a script by Jon Croker. The sequel takes place in the same house seen in the first film, but finds children evacuated from London during the Blitz in WWII taking refuge in the house.[Variety]

James Wan took part in a little press event this week to celebrate the ten-year anniversary of Saw. Along the way he ended up talking about Fast & Furious 7 to Collider. He calls it the hardest film he’s ever had to make. While he doesn’t mention the death of Paul Walker here, undoubtedly that played a big part in making the shoot particularly difficult.

It doesn’t matter how big or small your film is, you still don’t have enough money. You don’t have enough time to shoot it. When you’re making a bigger movie you have much bigger set pieces that require more time and more effort and more people. But Fast 7 is definitely the hardest movie I’ve had to do in my career. And it’s not just me. Neil Moritz [the film’s producer] has been doing this for a long time and is a very successful, seasoned producer and he said that to me too. That Fast 7 is the hardest movie he’s ever had to make as well in his entire career. And it’s very true. But I think the final product will surprise a lot of people. It’s that hardest film I’ve ever had to make but it’s also the one I’m proudest of. I’m really proud of this film.

Fast & Furious 7 opens on April 3, 2015. Saw will be back in theaters on October 31 of this year.

    ***

Speaking of Saw, at the same event producers told STYD that they’re working towards making a new film in the series. Oren Koules said,

James [Wan] and Leigh [Whannell, co-creators]…when Saw came out they were so afraid of being ‘the Saw guys’ and they were trying to make their own mark. Now that they’ve made their own mark, they’re very comfortable to come back. We’re getting there. James and Leigh are absolutely going to put their mark on it.

It’s one of the reasons we agreed to [put Saw back in theaters]. We kind of wanted to build it up. Our goal is to go to Comic-Con, not next summer but the summer after [2016] with our heads up saying, ‘Here we go.’ James and Leigh are comfortable with the success they’ve had. And it’s time. James is in post on his movie. Leigh’s on post on [Insidious Chapter 3]. Everyone has time and it’s time.

So will Wan and Whannell do another film? Wan told STYD,

I’ve entertained the idea. But that’s more of a fantasy, I think. It’s a story Leigh and I really like and…who knows?

    ***

James Cameron turned up for a 30th anniversary screening of The Terminator last night in Hollywood, and talked about both the past and the future of the Terminator film series. He talked to Empire about being happy watching his friend Laeta Kalogridis script the new film and looking forward to seeing where it goes.

I’m friendly with the filmmakers, the writer Laeta Kalogridis has worked with me on projects. I’m hoping it’s great. I’d like them to get it right, and based on the script that I read there’s a pretty good chance that it could. It looks like it could be fun. … [The quality of the film] is not my problem! It’s like being a grandparent, the kids come over and you can send them back! When I walked away from the franchise, I had to do it with the sense that I can invest in emotion. To me, it’s all upside, because if it’s good, it’s good for Arnold (Schwarzenegger), my friend Laeta and if it’s not good? It doesn’t bother me personally.

In 2019, however, the rights to all things Terminator revert to Cameron, at least under the terms of the current deal. Does that mean he might think about making another one? While he muses on the concept, it doesn’t seem likely.

I haven’t really thought that far ahead yet. I’ve got plenty of time to think about it. It might be fun to completely re-invent the franchise. A lot has to do with what happens with it in the meantime, people may have Terminator fatigue.

  • George Romero’s Son Crowdfunding ‘Night of the Living Dead’ Prequel ‘Origins’

George Romero’s Son Crowdfunding ‘Night of the Living Dead’ Prequel ‘Origins’

    Night of the Living Dead

George A. Romero‘s iconic zombies will shuffle across this earth again. Today, Romero’s son G. Cameron Romero announced an Indiegogo campaign to fund Origins — the prequel to his dad’s 1968 horror classic Night of the Living Dead.

Hit the jump for all the details on the Night of the Living Dead prequel.

Romero is teaming with Bloody Disgusting for the Origins Indiegogo campaign, which kicked off this morning with a goal of $150,000 for pre-production costs. Additionally, Origins already has the support of several companies including Cold Steel, the Zombie Apocalypse Store, and Dogfish Head Brewery.

The Night of the Living Dead prequel’s logline reads as follows:

Set in the turbulent late sixties, the film tells the story of a brilliant scientist – Dr. Alan Cartwright – who strikes a deal with the military that will give him all the resources he needs to finalize his work in exchange for what he later learns is a price all mankind will have to pay.

The older Romero will help produce. In a statement, the younger Romero explained what drove him to make the movie: “I feel carrying on my dad’s legacy is something that I not only want to do, but it’s something I HAVE to do because I, like all my dad’s fans, was raised on his creation.”

    G. Cameron Romero (yes, the G stands for “George”) has followed in his father’s footsteps as a horror director. His feature films include Radical, Auteur, and Staunton Hill.

Romero’s Indiegogo page offers a pretty good summary of what he considers distasteful (overacting, excessive gore) and what qualities he wants to achieve (“terrifying,” “original,” “respectful”). On a grander scale, Romero expresses his desire to “take back the zombie genre” and offer “the definitive answer to your questions about the creatures.” He further promises to “re-define the genre,” which seems, uh, pretty ambitious, to say the least.

As with all crowdfunding campaigns, there are prizes including posters, lunchboxes, signed severed limbs (presumably not real ones), a walk-on role as a zombie, and an executive producer credit. Click over to HelpTelltheOrigin.com or Indiegogo.com to get more information or contribute.

The original Night of the Living Dead is iconic for having introduced the modern concept of the zombie into popular culture. George A. Romero followed it up with five sequels, the last of which, Survival of the Dead, was released in 2009. The 1968 film has also been remade a number of times, most recently as a 3D animated pic.

  • Filming on Warcraft is Now Complete

Though it won’t hit theaters until March of 2016, director (and David Bowie progeny) Duncan Jones has announced that filming on the World of Warcraft movie adaptation is now complete.

“Final day on Warcraft now officially… wrapped!! Off to bed for 3 hours before a meeting in the AM. Goodnight/good morning twitter!” Jones tweeted, before being showered in congratulations from his various followers and electronic hangers on.

Scant plot information is available, suffice to say Warcraft focuses on the eternal struggle between Azeroth’s human-led Alliance races and the Horde, a noble yet overtly aggressive group consisting of orcs, trolls, tauren and the like. Paula Patton (Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol) and Travis Fimmel (Vikings) reportedly headline the film’s cast.

  • Top 10 Japanese Monsters (That Aren’t Godzilla)

It came from Japan! The colossal monster rises from the harbour and lays an apocalyptic smackdown on the horizon, taking a moment to pose in front of the smoking carnage and… it’s not Godzilla.

In the wake of the original Gojira’s box office waves, Toho studios pitted their unhouse-trained anti-hero against an unsavoury assortment of kaiju – literally ‘strange beast’ or, more accurately, vast city killing-monsters.

Meanwhile, Toho’s rivals tried to piggyback on the big guy’s success with a series of remarkably similar, if legally distinctive, kaijus of their own.

And with Godzilla returning to renovate coastlines in May, here’s the coat-tail hangers that we’d like to see follow suit… ideally, in a rubber one.
