Jason Bateman to Direct and Star in ‘IPO Man’

    Bad Words

Jason Bateman is going behind the camera again. The actor/director has just booked IPO Manbased on the real-life story of a guy who sold shares of himself and then let shareholders make his decisions for him. It sounds like horrible strategy for life, but could be a fun premise for a movie. Hit the jump for more on the Jason Bateman IPO Man movie.

The IPO Man of the title is Mike Merrill, whose story went viral last year thanks to a Wired magazine profile by Joshua Davis called Meet the Man Who Sold His Fate to Investors at $1 a Share. Deadline reports Fox Searchlight has just acquired that article, and set Bateman to star and direct. Bet the shareholders are happy about that.

In 2008, Merrill put himself on the market with 100,000 shares costing $1 apiece. 929 of them sold, and he kept the other 99,071 as a non-voting shareholder. His investors voted on everything from whether he should have a vasectomy (no) or invest in a Rwandan chicken farmer (yes). When Merrill’s IPO scheme cost him his girlfriend, a minority shareholder who was fed up with having strangers interfere in their lives, other investors weighted in on new potential love interests.

Micah Fitzerman-Blue and Noah Harpster will script IPO Man. The duo have written for Amazon’s acclaimed dramedy Transparent and are currently working on the Mister Rogers biopic I’m Proud of You, which Little Miss Sunshine helmers Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris will direct.

Bateman made his feature filmmaking debut this year with Bad Words, and quickly followed it up with his sophomore effort The Family Fang. The latter stars Nicole Kidman and Christopher Walken alongside Bateman and is expected out next year. His other recent projects as an actor include the dramedies The Longest Week and This Is Where I Leave You. Next month, he’ll be seen re-teaming with Charlie Day and Jason Sudeikis for Horrible Bosses 2.

  • ‘Terminator: Genisys’ Cast Squints at the Future in First Official Images

‘Terminator: Genisys’ Cast Squints at the Future in First Official Images

    Terminator Genisys cast

The two covers of the new issue of Entertainment Weekly feature our first official look at four of the stars of Terminator: Genisys. and one skeletal robot. “How to Save a Billion Dollar Franchise” blares the the copy in text only slightly smaller than the magazine’s title and the movie’s name. Well, here’s a hint on “saving a franchise”: don’t debut the characters in photos that look like they were taken at a mall during a festival for cosplayers on a budget. See the two covers below.

We have EW to thank for these images, which grace the magazine’s two latest covers. I can’t believe Skydance and Paramount approved these. I’m dying to see the ones the companies did not approve.

    Terminator: Genisys
    Terminator: Genisys

These photos range from not very good (Matt Smith’s cover) to really quite terrible (the other one). Do they mean the film will be bad? Nope! We’ve seen plenty of terrible photos for good films — these don’t even come from Paramount, but were likely shot by EW’s photographer. But it’s not the best move to debut these are the first thing most people will see for the movie. Let’s hope the footage is more compelling, when we see a trailer.

Oh, but wait. Here’s some of the plot. EW also offers this synopsis of the opening of the film.

The beginning of Terminator: Genisys, the first of three planned films that Paramount hopes will relaunch the beloved sci-fi franchise, is set in 2029, when the Future War is raging and a group of human rebels has the evil artificial-intelligence system Skynet on the ropes. John Connor (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes’ Jason Clarke) is the leader of the resistance, and Kyle Reese (Divergent‘s Jai Courtney) is his loyal soldier, raised in the ruins of post apocalyptic California. As in the original film, Connor sends Reese back to 1984 to save Connor’s mother, Sarah (Game of Thrones‘ Emilia Clarke), from a Terminator programmed to kill her so that she won’t ever give birth to John. But what Reese finds on the other side is nothing like he expected.

And if you want to know what that “nothing like he expected” looks like, here’s some info that could be considered spoilerish, if it hadn’t been approved by the studio for a first-look magazine feature. This stuff will probably all be in trailers.

Twist No. 1? Sarah Connor isn’t the innocent she was when Linda Hamilton first sported feathered hair and acid-washed jeans in the role. Nor is she Hamilton’s steely zero body-fat warrior in 1991’s T2. Rather, the mother of humanity’s messiah was orphaned by a Terminator at age 9. Since then, she’s been raised by (brace yourself) Schwarzenegger’s Terminator—an older T-800 she calls “Pops”—who is programmed to guard rather than to kill. As a result, Sarah is a highly trained antisocial recluse who’s great with a sniper rifle but not so skilled at the nuances of human emotion.

  • ‘Agent Carter’ TV Spot (Re)Introduces Marvel’s New Leading Lady

‘Agent Carter’ TV Spot (Re)Introduces Marvel’s New Leading Lady

    Agent Carter logo

Just hours after Marvel revealed plans for its first female-led superhero movie, it’s unveiled a first peek at its first female-led superhero show. Agent Carter stars Hayley Atwell, reprising the role of Peggy from Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

The first Agent Carter TV spot has Peggy in fine form, looking stylish as hell while gunning down bad guys. Watch it after the jump.

Marvel debuted the new Agent Carter TV spot on Twitter. It’s not a ton of footage, but it’s a fun little taste.

#AgentCarter is coming to ABC Tuesdays this January.
    https://t.co/SjrLrVABgM

    — Agent Carter (@AgentCarterTV) October 29, 2014

The slogan is cheesy and the sexy garter bit is downright groan-worthy, but Peggy herself looks as badass as ever. She should make a great addition to ABC/Marvel’s small screen lineup when her show kicks off next year.

Years before Agent Coulson and his S.H.I.E.L.D. team swore to protect those who cannot protect themselves from threats they cannot conceive, there was Agent Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell, Marvel’s “Captain America: The First Avenger,” Marvel’s “Captain America: The Winter Soldier”), who pledged the same oath but lived in a different time when women weren’t recognized as being as smart or as tough as their male counterparts.

But no one should ever underestimate Peggy.

It’s 1946 and peace has dealt Peggy a serious blow as she finds herself marginalized when the men return home from fighting abroad. Working for the covert SSR (Strategic Scientific Reserve), Peggy finds herself stuck doing administrative work when she would rather be back out in the field; putting her vast skills into play and taking down the bad guys. But she is also trying to navigate life as a single woman in America, in the wake of losing the love of her life, Steve Rogers – aka Captain America.

When old acquaintance Howard Stark (Dominic Cooper, Marvel’s “Captain America: The First Avenger”) finds himself being framed for unleashing his deadliest weapons to anyone willing to pony up the cash, he contacts Peggy – the only person he can trust – to track down those responsible, dispose of the weapons and clear his name. He empowers his butler, Edwin Jarvis (James D’Arcy, “Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World”), to be at her beck and call when needed to help assist her as she investigates and tracks down those responsible for releasing these weapons of mass destruction. But Jarvis, who is a creature of habit and sticks to a rigid daily routine, is going to have to make some major life changes if he’s going to be able to keep up with Peggy.

If caught going on these secret missions for Stark, Peggy could be targeted as a traitor and spend the rest of her days in prison – or worse. And as she delves deeper into her investigation, she may find that those she works for are not who they seem, and she might even begin to question whether Stark is as innocent as he claims.

  • Who Is Captain Marvel? Learn More About Marvel’s 2018 Superheroine

Who Is Captain Marvel? Learn More About Marvel’s 2018 Superheroine

    Who Is Captain Marvel?

One of the many new superheroes announced for the Marvel Cinematic Universe this week was Captain Marvel. To comic book readers, that name is a big deal — she’s a fan favorite character that people have been asking Kevin Feige about for years. But to everyone else, the name may not ring a bell.

To get you better acquainted with her in time for her 2018 debut, we’ve put together a primer explaining who she is, how she got here, and what her introduction might mean for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. If you’re going “Who is Captain Marvel?” you’ll get all the answers after the jump.

    Who Is Captain Marvel

    Who is Captain Marvel?

The short answer: As Kevin Feige said, “This Captain Marvel’s name is Carol Danvers.”

The long answer: Kevin Feige had to clarify the above because Captain Marvel has the nom de guerre of many different characters in the Marvel Comics universe. (To make matters even more confusing, Captain Marvel also used to be the name of the unrelated DC Comics superhero now known as Shazam.) The first Captain Marvel who debuted in 1967 was a Kree (alien) soldier called Mar-Vell, and the mantle passed through several more characters before landing with Carol Danvers in 2012.

    Carol Danvers

Okay, so who is Carol Danvers?

Carol Danvers first appeared in 1968 as a supporting character in Marvel Super-Heroes. She was a top U.S. Air Force pilot who moved on to the CIA and then NASA, where she met and eventually fell into a romance with the original Captain Marvel. During a battle with Mar-Vell’s nemesis Yon-Rogg, a radioactive explosion leads to Danvers’ DNA absorbing Mar-Vell’s genetic structure. That meant she also gained his powers, including flight and enhanced strength and durability. Danvers took on the superhero name Ms. Marvel for the first time in 1977.

    Ms Marvel

Over the next several decades, Danvers underwent all the sci-fi soap operatics typical for a Marvel superhero: She made new friends, fell in love, suffered losses, battled foes, gained and lost other powers, forayed into other realities, got trapped in an alternate dimension where she was raped and impregnated, and so on. At various points she’s taken on the aliases Binary and Warbird, and she’s rolled with the X-Men, the Avengers, the Starjammers, and the Guardians of the Galaxy.

    Captain Marvel

When did Carol Danvers become Captain Marvel?

Carol Danvers took on the Captain Marvel mantle in 2012, headlining her own series from writer Kelly Sue DeConnick and artist Dexter Soy. At the time, Captain Marvel was the publisher’s only solo female superhero title. It proved an immediate hit, and launched Carol Danvers to new heights. The new Captain Marvel inspired a devoted following calling themselves the Carol Corps, many of them women and girls excited to see a lady in the lead and eager to push for still more diversity in comics. And they seem to be succeeding, based on the recent announcements of a Muslim Ms. Marvel, a black Captain America, and a female Thor.

After the jump, find out what Carol Danvers is like and how she might fit into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The Deadpool movie adaptation has sat in limbo for a long time despite comic book fans banging on the movie studio walls.  X-Men Origins: Wolverine left Deadpool laying in the rubble, disfigured, and his mouth sewn shut.  The comic book version of the character wears a costume that covers his whole body, including his head, so it is possible for the character to appear without showing the face underneath the mask.Reynolds has described the character as “a cross between Commando and Phantom of the Opera, by way of Caddyshack,” a wise-cracking mercenary with a tendency to break the fourth wall. The Civil War storyline centers around the Superhero Registration Act, which requires anyone with superpowers to identify themselves to the U.S. government and effectively work as a police force for the authorities. Have ‘Back to the Future’ Questions For Christopher Lloyd? Ask Them Here!

Back in Time Back to the Future Documentary

/Film readers, you’ve been recruited. The producer and director of a new Back to the Future documentary, Back in Time, have asked for your help. They’re well into production on a documentary about the history of Back to the Future and the long-lasting effect the film has had on popular culture. However, the twist is the film is being told through the eyes of the film’s third star: The DeLorean.

Director Jason Aron and producers Louis Krubich and Lee Leshen have traveled all over talking to people inspired by the film, many of whom own DeLoreans, and the next up is one of their biggest yet: Doctor Emmet Brown himself, Christopher Lloyd. Aron has created a video specifically for the /Film readers asking for questions they can ask Lloyd. Then, sometime in the future, we’ll be able to post his answers, even if they don’t make it into the final film.

Below, give us your best Christopher Lloyd question in the comments, check out some production stills from Back in Time and read more about the film.

First up, here’s the video from Aron:

So again, put those questions in the comments below.

Here’s some more general information on the film followed by a few stills as well. We’ll have much more on Back in Time as it gets closer to completion:

Three decades after the Back to the Future franchise launched, a visionary project aims to examine the iconic movies’ impact on its global audience from the viewpoint of the star: the time machine itself, the DeLorean.

The cultural influence of the movies is the main element Director Jason Aron and his partners want to examine. With regular references to phrases like “88 miles per hour,” “1.21 gigawatts,” “flux capacitor,” and many, many more having crept into the vernacular, the films have clearly had a lasting impact on modern pop culture. The documentary will look at how the franchise has inspired the fans, and how it’s impacted and changed peoples’ lives. Throughout production so far, the team has met and interviewed cast, production crew, and fans on two continents, and will continue to examine the depth and breadth of the ripples caused by the films over the coming months.

  • MTV Gives Series Order to ‘Scream’

MTV Gives Series Order to ‘Scream’

    MTV scream series

Teen Wolf has guaranteed company in the film-to-TV crowd on MTV. The cable company has given a series order to Scream, the show based on Wes Craven’s defining horror series. We’ve heard, however, that the show at this point won’t feature Ghostface, the recognizable masked killer who made his on-screen debut in the original 1996 film. (The Ghostface mask was actually an existing creation, owned by the company FunWorld.) But that doesn’t mean there won’t be another killer on the loose. After all, there’s no Scream without a killer.

In a move designed (I guess) to hit the audience, MTV announced the show with a tweet packed with emoji.

    https://twitter.com/MTV/status/527188067841753088

Variety reminds us of a few more details. Scream stars Willa Fitzgerald (Alpha House),  John Karna (Premature), Carlson Young (Key and Peele) and Amadeus SerafiniBex Taylor-Klaus (The Killing) replaces Amy Forsyth (Reign), who was originally cast as the character Audrey Jensen.

I mentioned FunWorld earlier; part of the reason is that it is through this company that we hear Ghostface won’t show up in the TV series. As we reported not long agoRJ Torbert of FunWorld says,

Please note, that I had been in communication with TWC regarding this and they have informed me, that as of now, and during the initial launch that GHOST FACE® is not involved in the new format. They also indicated that because of this direction, it does not mean, that Ghost Face® will not be involved at a later date. So, there is still a question, to the question. However, as of now, there is no involvement. We believe SCREAM is GHOST FACE, and GHOST FACE® is Scream. However, while GHOST FACE® is owned by Fun World, The Scream Motion Picture Franchise is owned by The Weinstein Company and it is their option to Film a movie or T.V. SHOW without GHOST FACE®. Regardless, we wish them the best of luck and I’m sure SCREAM FANS will check out the series. Who knows what will happen in the future regarding the series and Ghost Face®. Never say Never.

One possibility here is that producers didn’t want to pay FunWorld’s license, and that Torbert is using public interest to try to drum up a contract. But that statement could have been prompted by other factors, too.

Jamie Travis directed the pilot from a script by exec producer Jill Blotevogel (Ravenswood), who rewrote the draft by Jay Beattie and Dan Dworkin (Criminal Minds, Revenge).

The first ten-episode run of Scream will debut in October 2015.
