Wow. This is crazy. There’s a video going around online from the special features of The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies that is one of the most honest looks at filmmaking I’ve ever seen. It features extensive footage and interviews of the entire crew of The Hobbit trilogy, from director Peter Jackson to all of his various staff including script supervisor, production designer and set decorator talking about how they all had no idea what they were doing with these movies. It’s a very sad, remarkably rare look at how hard it is to make a massive movie on this scale, and how much stress there is on a director. Having finally watched this video, I just keep wondering: how the heck did this get made and actually released to the public? Amazing. ›››

“No one comes up here without a damn good reason.” It’s time to count down the days until Tarantino’s latest! There’s only one month left until The Hateful Eight hits theaters on Christmas Day, December 25th, next month. The Weinstein Company has released a new poster for Quentin Tarantino’s new snowy 70mm western, and it only shows the backs of all the characters. Their faces are lined up in boxes at the bottom and thank goodness the names above actually line up with the images below. I’m anxiously awaiting the chance to see this, and I hope it lives up to the hype. All of the footage we’ve seen in trailers and the buzz going around so far seems promising. A little Hart and a big Johnson. What a tagline that is! Warner Bros has debuted the first trailer and poster for next summer’s comedy Central Intelligence, starring Kevin Hart and Dwayne Johnson. The story is about a CIA agent who brings in his old high school friend to help on a mission, but obviously he doesn’t fit in. Central Intelligence also stars Oscar nominee Amy Ryan, plus Aaron Paul, Brett Azar, Megan Park and Danielle Nicolet. There’s nothing much to say before other than maybe a few people will laugh, maybe they won’t. Though I think we can all agree that shot at the end pretty much ruins everything, no? ›››

But if every show is sold out and you still have to see something, this is one of the alternatives – Sisters. It’s a comedy starring Tina Fey and Amy Poehler as sisters who return to their home town and decided to throw one last raging party. It opens the same day as Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which means it’s fairly smart counter-programming to offer up to everyone not interested in space operas. Protect your assets. Universal has unveiled a trailer for next year’s comedy The Boss from director Ben Falcone and writer/star Melissa McCarthy, the team behind 2014’s Tammy. The Boss stars McCarthy as Michelle Darnell, the “wealthiest woman in America” who loses everything when she gets caught for insider trading. She gets a chance to start anew thanks to the kindness of her former assistant, played by Kristen Bell. The cast includes Kristen Schaal, Kathy Bates, Peter Dinklage and a few others. This definitely won’t connect with everyone. Some of this looks pretty bad, but some of it doesn’t look so bad. Take a look. ›››

“Where are the missile codes?” Lionsgate has debuted a trailer for the action thriller Extraction from director Steven C. Miller. This movie stars Bruce Willis as a former CIA operative kidnapped by terrorists, with Kellan Lutz play his son out to find him and get him home. The cast includes Gina Carano who seems to be helping them, but maybe not; plus D.B. Sweeney, Dan Bilzerian and Olga Valentina. There’s not that much action in this, and if anything it makes me want to watch the original Taken movie instead. Nothing but generic blandness here, only worth taking a look if you’re a die-hard fan of this cast. ›››

A new set of trailers have been uploaded online for the French animated film The Little Prince, from director Mark Osborne based on the beloved book of the same name. We’ve already been posting a number of trailers, but these new ones have English voices thanks to an entirely new voice cast including: Jeff Bridges, Rachel McAdams, Marion Cotillard, James Franco, Paul Rudd, Benicio del Toro, Paul Giamatti, Ricky Gervais, Albert Brooks, and Bud Cort. I love the animation style of this movie, but I also like the way the narrative intertwines the life of a young girl growing up and the original charming Le Petit Prince story we know. “All I want is what’s best for your family.” Samuel Goldwyn Films has released the trailer for a film called The Benefactor, formerly known as Franny when it premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival this year. It stars veteran actor Richard Gere as an eccentric rich man who meddles with the life of a deceased friend’s young daughter, played by Dakota Fanning, and her new husband, played by Theo James. It looks like there’s some very mysterious things going on with Gere’s character that we don’t all see, but I’m curious for that reason – to find out what is happening and who he really is.
