  • Oddworld: New N Tasty Coming to Xbox One and PC Soon

Oddworld: New ‘n’ Tasty, a remake of the cult 1997 PlayStation game, is scheduled for release on Xbox One and PlayStation 3 in March.

That means the platformer will arrive on Microsoft’s platform about eight months after its initial release on PlayStation 4, which was well received by critics. A PC, Mac and Linux version of Oddworld: New N Tasty is also due for release, coming on February 25.

Meanwhile, developer Just Add Water has yet to put a date on the Wii U and PlayStation Vita version.

“Work continues on the Wii U and PlayStation Vita versions,” a company representative told Videogamer.

“Converting our bespoke code, physics, highly detailed art assets and complex audio engines for the two formats from the PlayStation 4 and PC base continues to present engineering challenges relating to performance and memory, but recent progress is encouraging as we strive to make every iteration of New ‘n’ Tasty the perfect fit for the platform.

“We’ll have more to share on the remaining versions in due course.”

  • Epic Laptop Mod Combines PS4 and Xbox One

Epic Laptop Mod Combines PS4 and Xbox One

Master modder Eddie Zarick, whose previous creations include PlayStation 4 and Xbox One laptops, has revealed his latest work, and it’s the grandest of them all. The PlayBox is a custom-made laptop that combines rivals consoles PS4 and Xbox One into a single 22″ laptop form factor.

Writing on his website, Zarick says he built the console mod specifically for a customer, and does not plan to produce more units unless they are requested. Due to the “high cost and complexity of the process,” the PlayBox will cost substantially more than his previous creations, Zarick said.

As for the console mod itself, as you can see in the image above and at left, the PS4 sits on the left-hand side of the unit, while the Xbox One is on the right. The entire unit requires only one power cord, though just a single system (PS4 or Xbox One) can be powered on at once so that the unit doesn’t overheat.

Zarick did need to make some compromises in the PlayBox’s development. For example, the USB ports on the side of the Xbox One are inaccessible, though all other input sources are free and available.

To go between PS4 and Xbox One, all you need to do is flip a switch on the back of the unit. What’s more, the unit comes with a smart HDMI switcher that can automatically detect which unit is powered on.

Zarick says the only major issue he encountered with the mod came down to the PS4’s power button, which doesn’t work consistently due to interference with the Xbox One. However, he points out that the PS4 turns on just fine using the DualShock 4 controller.

For more on the PlayBox, head to Zarick’s website.

  • Xbox One System Update Adds Game Hubs and Tile Transparency

Microsoft has detailed its first Xbox One system update of 2015, which introduces info hubs for each game, tile transparency on the Dashboard, as well as an assortment of other improvements and tweaks.

The system update, scheduled to go live in February, is now available for beta testing by those who have entered into the preview program.

At the centre of the Xbox One update is Game Hubs, which are attached to every game when selected on the Dashboard. These hubs will pool together information such as video clips, leaderboards, and friend activity.

Meanwhile, custom backgrounds will be given more exposure with transparency options on Dashboard tiles. Microsoft notes, however, that some tiles cannot be made as transparent due to restrictions on amending logos from third-party partners.

The update also includes various tweaks to the TV software, such as OneGuide and Trending.

Since the launch of the Xbox One in November 2013, Microsoft has taken a proactive approach to platform updates, and usually rolls out new system software on a monthly basis. The company says that, in 2014 alone, it had introduced more than 100 new features and adjustments to the operating system.

In June, Microsoft opened a dedicated feedback site for customers to request specific fixes.

Meanwhile, Microsoft has made significant changes to the console’s hardware, first by improving ESRAM performance, and then with an update that adjusts the Xbox One’s CPU performance so that more processing resources can be used by games.

“We’re excited to start the New Year off on the right foot by continuing our commitment to making Xbox One the best place to play,” Microsoft said.

At the time of going to press, there is no specific release date announced for the February update.

The list of changes, written by Microsoft, can be found below.

    • Game hubs New in preview this month, game hubs are the go-to centers for all sorts of interesting content around your favorite games. Every Xbox One game will have a game hub where you can see which of your friends are playing the game, compete with your friends in game leaderboards, dive into the coolest game clips and game broadcasts, and follow the game’s VIPs and top players.
To get to the game hub for your favorite game, find a game in your pins, recently played list, or My games and apps, then press the Menu button and select View game hub. You can also search for any game in the Xbox Store and click on the game hub tile from the game’s store page.
    • Custom backgrounds and tile transparency – We listened to your feedback and added additional tile transparency to the Home tiles to make your background images more visible. As a reminder, to set a custom background, go to Settings > My Xbox> My background. Note: some items can’t be made transparent due to usage rights/restrictions for certain images.
    • TV updates – We’re releasing a lot of updates to the live TV experience and features are being released to additional countries in preview this month:
      • OneGuide for the Netherlands – Support for OneGuide will continue in preview for the Netherlands and the missing channels for the Netherlands OneGuide listings will become available over the next few weeks.
      • TV trending in OneGuide – As you scan the detailed OneGuide TV listings, you can see which shows are trending by a “Trending on Xbox” note and associated icon. Xbox – live TV trending is based on the number of Xbox One owners currently watching that show in each country, pulled from anonymous data collected at a national level. Currently, Xbox TV trending is available to all members in the U.S., UK and Canada.
      • Live TV trending (new countries) France, Germany, Brazil and Mexico will begin seeing live TV trending data in Xbox OneGuide.
      • Improved control of TVs, set-top boxes and audio/video receivers – Xbox One will work even better with more devices. This month’s preview release contains updates to the IR blasting database for new models and addresses issues reported by our fan community.
      • “Trick play” with Xbox One Digital TV Tuner – Preview members with the Xbox One Digital TV Tuner in supported countries (UK, France, Germany, Italy and Spain) will now be able to see video frames when fast-forwarding or rewinding paused TV on your Xbox One consoles.
      • Live TV streaming on Windows Phone and Android – We are continuing the preview of live TV streaming on Windows Phone and Android devices for Xbox One Digital TV Tuner owners in the UK, France, Germany, Italy and Spain.

  • Total War: Warhammer Leaked Ahead of Announcement

Total War: Warhammer Leaked Ahead of Announcement

A new Total War game has been accidentally revealed via a copy of “The Art of Total War” book. The artbook, which is scheduled for release on January 23, was shipped early to a fan who posted the information onto the Total War forums (via Kotaku.) An interview with The Creative Assembly’s creative director Mike Simpson published in the book reveals that the developer is working on a game titled Total War: Warhammer.

    Credit: StormOfRazors

Not much is known about the game, but given the attachment of the Total War name, it will feature similar elements of grand strategy and military tactics. GameSpot has reached out to a SEGA representative for comment.

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that The Creative Assembly is working on a Warhammer game, given that the developer signed a deal with Warhammer creator Games Workshop in December 2012. Total War: Warhammer will be the first Warhammer game Creative Assembly has worked on.

  • Shadowrun: Hong Kong Fully Funded In Just A Few Hours

Shadowrun: Hong Kong Fully Funded In Just A Few Hours

Independent developer Harebrained Schemes today launched a Kickstarter funding campaign for a brand new PC Shadowrun game called Shadowrun: Hong Kong. The project didn’t take long to find success, as the crowdfunding campaign blew past its $100,000 target in just a couple hours.

At press time (5:30 PM EDT), funding stood at $182,242 from more than 4,500 backers.

Shadowrun: Hong Kong, a follow-up to Shadowrun Returns and Shadowrun Returns: Dragonfall, is described as a “full-length standalone cyberpunk tactical cRPG” set in a “magically awakened” Hong Kong of 2056.

“Shadowrun: Hong Kong has everything you expect from a Harebrained Schemes Shadowrun game,” Harebrained Schemes says. “Strong storytelling and sharp writing, lots of morally gray choices, a crew of memorable characters with distinct personalities, challenging tactical turn-based combat, a robust character creation system, and a one of a kind cyberpunk-meets-magic game setting that’s endured for over 25 years.”

Harebrained Schemes adds that Shadowrun: Hong Kong should offer around 12 hours of gameplay, though this could grow further if extra money pours in–and that’s definitely the case right now. Backing the project will increase its production budget, which will in turn lead to additional features, improvements, and more, the developer says. For example, now that the project has exceeded $150,000, that means Harebrained Schemes will add animatic scene transitions to the game.

Shadowrun: Hong Kong is in development for Windows, Mac, and Linux only. There was no mention of a console or tablet release, and it doesn’t sound like that’s going to change.

“We have elected to focus all our efforts on PC in order to deliver the best game we can without the current processing and memory limitations of tablets,” the studio said. “This focus allows us to have higher-fidelity visuals, larger map sizes, and more stuff on screen.”

To learn more about Shadowrun: Hong Kong, and to contribute to its crowdfunding campaign, visit the game’s Kickstarter page. Harebrained Schemes has not announced a release date yet.

  • Minecraft Players Can Change Their Usernames Soon

Minecraft Players Can Change Their Usernames Soon

Don’t like the in-game name you chose for Minecraft? Want to change it? If so, you’re in luck, as developer Mojang has announced that Minecraft players will be able to change their usernames starting February 4.

As explained on Monjang’s website, there is no fee associated with the much-requested name-change service. All you need to do is visit your Mojang account page and click the “change” link next to your name when it becomes available next month.

Players who don’t want to amend their names don’t need to worry about someone else copying their title, as Mojang says it will not allow duplicates. However, if a player changes their name, the former title will become available for anyone to register 37 days later.

Mojang also points out that you won’t be able to change your name every day, as there is a 30-day waiting period between each amendment. In addition, the developer makes clear that banned players will stay banned, even if they change their names.

Usernames from the earlier, free version of Minecraft will be discontinued when the name-change service arrives in February. If you want to hang on your unpaid name, you can switch it over to a paid account.

Xbox company Microsoft acquired Minecraft and Mojang in September through a deal worth an estimated $2.5 billion. As part of the buyout, Minecraft creator Markus “Notch” Persson left the company.

  • Next-Gen Hitman to be Revealed This Year

Next-Gen Hitman to be Revealed This Year

Hitman developer IO Interactive has confirmed that the latest instalment in the series is due for a full reveal later in the year.

Though the new Hitman game was first mentioned in January 2014, little has been said of it since. Developer IO Interactive previously confirmed that the game will depict “a globetrotting Agent 47 at the prime of his career”, and confirmed it will ship on Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC.

Following a protracted silence, one fan asked IO Interactive via its official twitter account when the new game will ship, to which the studio replied “there’s more info coming this year and we can’t wait to share it”.

@kirolos55 There’s more info coming this year and we can’t wait to share it!

    — Hitman (@Hitman) January 12, 2015

According to comments made by IO Interactive last year, the new Hitman game will retain the “core” of the series, insofar as players can use a “wide range” of tools to take out a diverse group of targets on a global scale.

The game will run on a form of the Glacier 2 engine, which powered 2012’s Hitman: Absolution.

This concept art is the only image of the new Hitman game revealed by IO Interactive

“We’re packing in an extreme level of detail on the largest levels we have ever built for a Hitman game,” IO Interactive stated at the time.

“We’ve adopted an open, non-linear level design approach to the game, ensuring the game will play out across huge, checkpoint-free, sandbox levels. Our aim is to create living, breathing, and believable levels which will allow gamers to play around with the AI to create those unique moments every fan of the Hitman franchise loves.”

Contracts Mode, a mission-editor feature that allows players to create murder scenarios, will also return for the new Hitman game. Players will be able to create these challenges and then share them online.

“You will also be glad to hear that we have removed 47’s magic pockets,” the developer said. “We believe that’s all we need to say about that subject.”

Hitman Absolution, the last triple-A instalment in the series, was released in 2012. Since then, series co-developer Square Enix Montreal has been working on expanding the IP to mobile, and in April last year it shipped a puzzle game called Hitman Go, which was nominated by GameSpot as one of the best mobile games of 2014.
