  • Super Smash Bros. 3DS Amiibo Updates Arrives Tuesday

Super Smash Bros. 3DS Amiibo Updates Arrives Tuesday

Nintendo on Tuesday will release a new update for Super Smash Bros. 3DS that enables support for the company’s NFC-powered Amiibo toys, the company confirmed in a statement to NintendoLife.

The update, which will be free, arrives just days before the launch of the New Nintendo 3DS. The system will be released across North America and Europe on February 13.

The ‘New Nintendo 3DS’ is the latest variant of the popular handheld gaming system, which includes built-in NFC technology. This means users can simply place their Amiibo toy onto the system to “warp” it into the virtual world.

Nintendo also plans to release a peripheral for the existing 3DS, 3DS XL, and 2DS models allowing those devices to sync up with Amiibo toys. However, Nintendo has not announced an official launch date or price for the add-on.

Amiibo support has been available for Super Smash Bros. Wii U since November 2014. For more on how the Wii U version of Super Smash Bros. makes use of Amiibo toys, check out the video below.

Nintendo has sold around 5.7 million Amiibo toys worldwide to date. By comparison, Activision has sold more than 240 million Skylanders toys so far, though the Call of Duty publisher’s line of toys have been around much longer than Nintendo’s have.

Do you plan to utilize Amiibo support in Super Smash Bros. for 3DS? Let us know in the comments below!

  • Battlefield Hardline Beta Hits 6 Million Players, More Than Destiny Beta

Battlefield Hardline Beta Hits 6 Million Players, More Than Destiny Beta

[UPDATE] As the Hardline Beta closed on its final day on Sunday, EA has announced that the number of registered users has surpassed 6 million.

    The original story is below.

The Battlefield Hardline beta is proving to be incredibly popular as it passed the 5 million player mark.

“Wow, we’ve passed 5 MILLION players in the #BFHardline beta!” General Manager of developer Visceral Games and Executive Producer of Battlefield Hardline Steve Papoutsis said on Twitter. “So proud of our team. Glad you’re having fun and keep that feedback coming.”

To put things into perspective, Destiny‘s beta, which was the biggest for a new IP on consoles, had 4.6 million players. However, Battlefield Hardline’s beta has the advantage of both being on the PC, and coming from a well established franchise.

The beta started on Tuesday, February 3 across North America, Europe, and all other major territories that the game will ship on, and ends today. It was available on PC (Origin), PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360. The one exception is Japan, where the beta was not available on Xbox platforms.

The Battlefield Hardline release date is March 17 in the US and March 20 in the UK on Origin for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, and Xbox 360.

  • SWAT Team Raids Gamer's Home During Twitch Stream

SWAT Team Raids Gamer's Home During Twitch Stream

A Twitch streamer based in St Cloud, Minnesota, on Thursday aired an emotional message to the anonymous culprit who summoned a SWAT team to raid his home.

Joshua Peters, who serves in the US Air Force, broke down in tears on camera after explaining that–moments prior–an armed SWAT team of about ten officers had forced their way through his home.

Police were called to Peters’ abode while he was playing a livestream of Runescape in front of an estimated 60,000 viewers. Webcam footage shows Peters lifting off his headset after his mother, off-camera, explains that officers have entered the house.

Joshua Peters addressed the hoaxer shortly after police raided his home

Moments later, Peter returns to the camera to explain his family had been raided by police due to a fake distress call. It was one of Peters’ ten year-old brothers who answered the front door when armed police arrived.

“I had police point a gun at my little brothers because of you,” Peters said in a message to the anonymous culprit, who had also posted his address on the Twitch stream chat log.

“They could have been shot, they could have died because you chose to SWAT my stream,” he said, holding his emotions.

“I don’t give a shit about what you have against me, or what I did to you. For that, I am at a loss for words. Your gripe is with me so let it be with me and do not involve my family in any way, shape or form with this. They don’t deserve that.”

The illegal hoax call, known as swatting, involves obtaining someone’s home address (usually via their IP address) and making a distress call to the police. Often the hoaxer will use masking software that makes the call appear to come from the victim’s house.

While no one has yet died from the prank, one victim of the hoax believes the punishment for the culprits should be an attempted murder sentence.

In an unrelated case, a 19 year-old Las Vegas teen is expected to appear in court on Monday, charged with a spate of Swatting hoaxes. Brandon Wilson, who goes by the online handle “Famed God,” faces up to five years in prison.

Peters, meanwhile, says he has been overwhelmed with support from the community following the prank.

Going live in 10 min because of all the support this amazing online community has shown in the past 24 hours. My family and I thank you. <3

  • Evolve 3GB Day-One Patch Improves Loading Times

Evolve will get a day-one patch that will improve several aspects of the game, developer Turtle Rock Studios has announced.

The patch will vary in size depending on the platform, but it’s about 3GB, and most notably improves load times, matchmaking, and network bandwidth optimizations.

The patch also addresses several bugs discovered during the Big Alpha and Open Beta, balances Monsters and Hunters, and adds connectivity to the recently released Evolve mobile game.

Finally, the patch reworks the Elite skins for Hunters and Monsters based on feedback from the community. “We’ve updated or outright replaced the assets that were already in the game,” Turtle Rock said. “All you need to do to unlock them: EARN THEM.”

For examples of how the Elite skins were changed, head here, and for the complete list of what’s included in the day-one patch, head here.

  • The Witness' Developer Says Speedrun Still Took Him Over Six Hours

The Witness' Developer Says Speedrun Still Took Him Over Six Hours

Even knowing all of the ins and outs of the game’s puzzles, it still took developer Jonathan Blow over six hours to make it through a speedrun of his next work-in-progress game, The Witness

Though he said he forgot a part of the game after the fact, Blow played through The Witness as fast as he could yesterday, and managed to finish it in a little over six hours and 20 minutes. But that doesn’t mean Blow’s fastest time offers any indication of how long the average player will be able to make it through on their first playthrough; Blow also shared on Twitter that The Witness is somewhere in the range of “10x as big as Briad.” However, that comes with the disclaimer, “The time may change as the game continues to be worked on!”

Last month, Blow revealed that The Witness’ 677 puzzled are locked in. “This means that all puzzles that will be in the game when it ships are in the game now,” Blow said in a developer diary entry.

Blow also recently told Engadget that he’s put all the proceeds from Braid into funding the development of The Witness, and that he’s had to borrow money to finish the project.

[Editor’s Note: Due to some confusion with this article’s previous headline, which was “It Will Take You at Least Six Hours to Finish The Witness,” the headline and some introductory text have been updated to offer greater clarity. We apologize for any confusion the previous story’s wording may have caused.]

  • Watch 24 Minutes of Xenoblade Chronicles X Open World Gameplay

Nintendo has released a new, 24-minute video showing off open-world gameplay footage of the upcoming Wii U exclusive Xenoblade Chronicles X.

Unfortunately, the video is only available in Japanese at the moment, but you can still gather a lot about the game by just watching gameplay. You’ll get to see a little bit of group combat, exploring a few of the game’s huge open areas, and some of its giant robots flying around.

Xenoblade Chronicles X will launch in Japan on April 29, and in North America and Europe later this year.

In other Xenoblade Chronicles news, Nintendo recently announced that Xenoblade Chronicles 3D, the upcoming port of Monolith Soft’s Wii game, will launch exclusively for the New Nintendo 3DS on April 10.

The reason Xenoblade Chronicles 3D is exclusive to the New 3DS is because the system packs a speedier CPU that is necessary for running the game. It’s the only game to be announced so far that requires the new system, which also plays all regular 3DS games.

  • RadioShack Goes Bankrupt

Even RadioShack was making fun of how outdated RadioShack was before the electronics store filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy earlier this week. However, the stores won’t disappear entirely, the company is just no longer independently owned.

RadioShack operated 4,000 stores in the US. According to GameSpot sister site CNET, General Wireless, a unit of investing firm Standard General, will buy between 1,500 to 2,400 of those stores. Wireless service provider Sprint said it made a deal with General wireless to create 1,750 stores that will sell a combination of Sprint products and services and RadioShack goods.

Like another big electronics store franchise Circuit City, which tried to rebrand itself as “The City” before it went bankrupt in 2009, RadioShack previously tried to rebrand itself as “The Shack.” It also reconfigured its stores, as you can see in the commercial above, but kept losing ground to online retailers like Amazon and big box stores.

RadioShack was founded in 1921, and over its lifetime sold electronics, tools for hobbyists, RC cars, and even games and consoles.

  • Contrast Dev's Next Game Involves Masks, Drugs, and Memory Loss

Contrast Dev's Next Game Involves Masks, Drugs, and Memory Loss

Compulsion Games, the developer behind 2013’s puzzle platformer Contrast, has teased its next game.

At this point, we don’t know much about Compulsion Games’ new project other than that it won’t be a sequel to Contrast. “We haven’t ruled out doing one in the future, but after so long working on Contrast, we wanted to make something fresh,” the developer said in a post to its official site. “Something new and exciting. It involves masks, drugs and memory loss, but we swear it’s not a swinger’s party.”

In addition, Compulsion Games released the concept art images you can see here. It said that you should keep checking its website over the next month if you want to hear more about the game, or sign up for its newsletter.

Contrast was released on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and last generation systems. The game blended 2D and 3D, using objects and their shadows to solve puzzles. GameSpot’s review gave Contrast a mediocre score of 5/10.
