  • Star Citizen Hits $77 Million, Up $1 Million in Five Days

Star Citizen Hits $77 Million, Up $1 Million in Five Days

The crowfunding campaign for Wing Commander creator Chris Roberts’ upcoming PC space game Star Citizen continues to soar. The “first-person universe” game’s total funding now stands at just over $77 million, which is up by $1 million in just five days. At press time, funding was $77,136,384 from 856,663 total backers.

Star Citizen is already said to be the most successful crowdfunded project, of any kind, in history. All additional funds raised for Star Citizen will go towards expanding the scope of the game.

Roberts previously predicted that Star Citizen would eventually reach $100 million. If funding continues at this pace, the game will hit that mark before the end of the year. Just recently, Roberts said, “I don’t think we’re close to the addressable market” in terms of how much room the game still had to grow.

In other Star Citizen news, developer Cloud Imperium Games has launched an official Instagram account for the game, giving you yet another way to track the title’s development. Check out the page here.

  • Following Violent Threats Against His Family, Mortal Kombat Producer Leaves Twitter

Following Violent Threats Against His Family, Mortal Kombat Producer Leaves Twitter

Veteran Mortal Kombat producer Shaun Himmerick is stepping away from social media site Twitter in the wake of violent and disturbing threats against his family, some of which were sexual in nature.

On March 26, Himmerick posted a threatening message [NSFW] he received from a fan regarding his wife. At this time, Himmerick announced he would be leaving Twitter, and he also changed his Twitter handle to “come on people.”

Across a series of follow-up tweets, Himmerick went on to offer more insight into why he’s decided to quit Twitter. It’s not because he’s inundated with messages from fans asking about new Mortal Kombat characters and other details about the game. He says he understands this passion and it’s what drives him at work, too. Instead, he’s stepping away because he won’t stand for threats against his wife and daughters.

So to be clear. The reason I don’t want to do this twitter anymore is not fans asking for characters or hints or whatever. I get that ->

    — come on people (@lover_of_tacos) March 27, 2015

That is passion and love for the Mortal Kombat and I also have that. So I get it. No problem. I’m glad people care about their favorites ->

    — come on people (@lover_of_tacos) March 27, 2015

I used to be thick skinned enough for the random personal attacks. I’m a big boy I can handle it. I’ve been in my share of fights. ->

    — come on people (@lover_of_tacos) March 27, 2015

However I cannot deal with the threats of violence to my wife and now young daughter. threats of sexual violence are even more disturbing ->

    — come on people (@lover_of_tacos) March 27, 2015

You wanna fight me for Any reason. I’m probably willing to go, verbally or physically. I can hold my own. But threats on my ladies? No

    — come on people (@lover_of_tacos) March 27, 2015

Earlier this year, Twitter CEO Dick Costolo admitted: “We suck at handling abuse” for its millions of users.

“I’m frankly ashamed of how poorly we’ve dealt with this issue during my tenure as CEO,” he said in February. “It’s absurd. There’s no excuse for it. I take full responsibility for not being more aggressive on this front. It’s nobody’s fault but mine, and it’s embarrassing.”

As it faced an avalanche of criticism, Twitter in December announced new harassment reporting features that the company says it hopes will make Twitter a safer place. However, when Electronic Arts COO Peter Moore reported death threats made against him and his family to Twitter, he was told that the harassing tweets did not violate the company’s rules.

Moore says he receives similar threats on a daily basis. And he’s not the only one with ties to gaming taking abuse through Twitter. Call of Duty developer David Vonderhaar has also faced threats against his life from people upset with gameplay tweaks.

More recently, Feminist Frequency creator Anita Sarkeesian published an account of the harassment she received on Twitter from January 20 through the 26th, which included death and rape threats, among other things.

  • PS4 Music Streaming Through Spotify Goes LIve

PS4 Music Streaming Through Spotify Goes LIve

Music streaming service Spotify on Monday released its first-ever console app, launching a dedicated experience exclusively (at least for the time being) for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and Xperia mobile devices. “PlayStation Music” is the name of the Spotify-PlayStation app, replacing Music Unlimited.

Users can stream more than 30 million songs and 1.5 billion playlists across devices. On PS4, users will be able to stream Spotify music while playing games, though this feature was not announced for PS3.

A special “Spotify Connect” feature is also now available through the Android/iOS Spotify app, allowing PS3 and PS4 users to control the music that gets played on their console remotely.

Sony did not say if PlayStation Music will be available on PlayStation Vita.

Spotify is currently available as a free, ad-supported streaming service on desktop and mobile. The company also offers a $10/month subscription that kills ads, allows offline play, and more.

PlayStation rival Xbox has its own music-streaming service, Xbox Music.

People who had a Music Unlimited account active as of March 29, 2015 can receive two free months of Spotify Premium. Meanwhile, new users can try Spotify Premium for one month at no cost.

Sony also teased that the arrival of Spotify today on PlayStation consoles is “just the beginning” for PlayStation Music. The service will “continue to evolve” with “exciting new features.”

Will Spotify ever come to Xbox or other gaming consoles? That’s still to be decided.

Eurogamer asked Sony marketing director Murray Pannell how long PlayStation will have exclusivity for Spotify on consoles. He responded, “That’s to be decided exactly, but certainly for the foreseeable.”

Are you going to try out Spotify on your PlayStation console? Let us know in the comments below!

The PlayStation Music launch markets are: Andorra, Austria, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Malta, Mexico, Monaco, New Zealand, Netherlands, Norway, Peru, Poland, Portugal, Singapore, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Turkey, UK, and USA.

  • New Halo 5 Trailers Confirm October Release Date

Microsoft has unveiled two new trailers for its upcoming sci-fi shooter, Halo 5: Guardians. Posted on the official Xbox YouTube account, the trailers confirm the game’s release date of October 27 this year on Xbox One.

The Xbox twitter account also posted tweets accompanying each trailer, with the text stating that they are two sides of the same story. One features Master Chief (embedded above) and the other features newcomer Spartan Locke (embedded below), who refers to Master Chief as “the one who was supposed to save us all.”

Last week Microsoft launched a “Hunt the Truth” teaser website for Halo 5: Guardians offering vague new details about the upcoming game. The site poses the question, “Who is the real Master Chief?” with an audio recording that parodies the popular Serial podcast.

It has been confirmed that Agent Locke would be a playable character in Halo 5, and that Cortana will make an appearance in the game. Halo 5: Guardians is in development at 343 Industries exclusively for Xbox One. Producer Josh Holmes recently confirmed that the game will use dedicated servers for all multiplayer, including custom games.

  • Resident Evil 5 Gets Steamworks Instead of Games for Windows Live, New Content

Resident Evil 5 Gets Steamworks Instead of Games for Windows Live, New Content

Resident Evil 5 can now use Steamworks on PC instead of Games for Windows Live for its online features, Capcom has announced.

If you purchased the game on Steam, you’ll be automatically upgraded to the full Steamworks edition so you don’t have to use GFWL anymore. If you originally bought a retail package GFWL version, you can use the GFWL activation code on Steam to redeem the Steamworks-enabled version. The game also has a built-in tool to allow you to transfer save data and Achievements from the GFWL version to Steam.

Sadly, any DLC content you bought directly from Microsoft’s GFWL Marketplace store will not carry over to Steam due to the lack of a CD or activation key.

If you want, you can also just keep playing the GFWL you have installed.

The new Steamworks version also adds the Gold Edition content that was released on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Available for $15, the Untold Stories Bundle adds a versus mode, four new costumes, Mercenaries Reunion, and two new story-based chapters.

  • Changing PC Hardware Too Often Can Lock You Out of Origin Games, EA Confirms

If you’re benchmarking different PC hardware components in a short period of time you can accidentally lock yourself out of games that use Electronic Arts’ digital distribution platform Origin, the publisher has confirmed.

The news comes out of Guru 3D, where writer Hilbert Hagedoorn discovered he had locked himself out of Battlefield Hardline while running a graphics performance test using different graphics cards.

After using a “handful” of graphics cards, he received a notification from Origin that too many computers have accessed his account’s version of Battlefield Hardline. Hagedoorn thought that this was a new kind of digital rights management software associated with Battlefield Hardline, but Electronic Arts has since released a statement that this is a part of Origin in general.

“Origin authentication allows players to install a game on up to five different PCs every 24 hours,” Electronic Arts said in a statement. “Players looking to benchmark more than five hardware configurations in one 24 hour period can contact our Customer Support team who can help.”

It’s not going to be an issue for most players, but at least now you know that if you’re going to be testing a lot of new PC hardware components, you’ll need to contact EA’s Customer Support team first.
