  • No Prison Sentence For Hacker Linked to Xmas PSN/XBL Takedown

No Prison Sentence For Hacker Linked to Xmas PSN/XBL Takedown

A seventeen year-old with ties to black hat hacking group Lizard Squad has been convicted of more than 50,000 charges related to cyber crimes in a court in Espoo, Finland.

    Julius “Zeekill” Kivimaki

Local media reports claim that Julius “Zeekill” Kivimaki has been sentenced for a whole range of offences, such as data breaches, online harassment, fraud, and money laundering. He will serve a two-year suspended sentence and, according to the Finnish newspaper Kaleva, has been “ordered to fight against cyber crime.” He has not been given a prison sentence.

Kivimaki has previously represented himself has a member of Lizard Squad, an online group of hackers who claim responsibility for a number of high-profile network disruptions and website takedowns.

One of Lizard Squad’s most notorious attacks was the disruptions to Xbox Live and PlayStation Network, which were both knocked offline for several days between Christmas Day and New Year’s.

A massive distributed-denial-of-service (DDoS) attack ground both those networks to a halt, resulting in engineers at both Sony and Microsoft working during the holidays to restore the service.

During the downtime, Sky News aired an interview with Kivimaki, and he suggested he had no regrets over the attack.

“I can’t really say I feel bad. I might have forced some kids to spend more time with their families instead of playing games.”

Through its Twitter account, a representative for Lizard Squad appeared to mock those who hoped Kivimaki would receive a harsher sentence.

All the people that said we would rot in prison don’t want to comprehend what we’ve been saying since the beginning, we have free passes.

And no zeekill will not be extradited. Finnish citizens have the right to refuse extradition regardless of any treaty.

  • Xbox One Update Paves Way for Windows 10 Game Streaming

Microsoft has released a new patch for Xbox One, deploying some background changes to the system. The update doesn’t introduce any new features, and is instead designed to prepare the Xbox One for game streaming compatibility with Windows 10.

As well as this, the update will prime the console for backward compatibility support, which was announced at E3.

“There are no new user-facing features in this release,” Microsoft said. “The team [is focused] on the New Xbox One Experience that will be available later this year.”

Microsoft previously confirmed Windows 10 will be integrated into Xbox One as part of a wider philosophy of sharing applications across devices and platforms.

“We’ll treat gaming on Windows 10 with the same passion as we’ve put into the Xbox console,” said head of Xbox Phil Spencer.

Spencer also revealed PCs and tablets running the latest version of its operating system will support Xbox One game streaming later this year.

“We have to put the gamer at the center of every experience,” he added.

Microsoft has confirmed the Windows 10 release date as July 29. For the first twelve months following Windows 10’s launch, PCs running Windows 7 and 8 will be eligible for a free upgrade to the new OS.

Windows 10 features a new Xbox gaming app, which will not require Xbox Live Gold. Windows 10 will also support cross-platform play, starting with Fable Legends.

Microsoft’s chief executive Satya Nadella has said Xbox One, games, and HoloLens are key parts of his vision for the future of the company.

  • PewDiePie: "Money Doesn't Make You Happy"

Felix ‘PewDiePie’ Kjellberg has responded to negative comments resulting from recent reports claiming he earned $7.5 million in 2014.

A new six-minute video posted on YouTube, he recounts his rise to prominence–which starts with dropping out of university to work at a hot dog stand–before addressing the issue of money.

“Money is a topic that I purposefully tried to avoid for the five years I’ve been making videos,” he said. “I just feel like it’s not important to anyone. I just want to make entertaining videos.”

“Whenever it comes out how much I made a certain year, people just get so shocked,” he continues. “A lot of people were also very angry. They thought it was unfair. They thought I just sit on my ass and I yell at the screen over here–which is true–but there’s so much more to it than that.”

The YouTube superstar goes on to admit that money has certainly helped him, but added that he feels that people getting upset about him is “just sad.”

“I understand that haters are going to hate, but I really think that money doesn’t make you happy. I’m just as happy now as I was five years ago. I’m very happy that I don’t have to worry about paying rent.

“That was a huge issue when Marzia [another successful YouTuber and PewDiePie’s girlfriend] came to Sweden, we could barely afford it. So I’m happy about that, but other than that, it doesn’t change much. To see so many people upset about this thing–it’s just sad. I think it’s such a waste.”

According to a Swedish newspaper, PewDiePie Productions AB, Kjeilber’s company, generated 63 million SEK ($7.4m) in 2014, which was up from $3.5 million in 2013, and $850k in 2012.

PewDiePie, who is famous for his Let’s Play videos, currently has 37 million subscribers and is believed to generate more than $4 million in ad sales per year. In 2014, he raised $630,000 for the Save the Children charity.

  • "We Screwed Up," Reddit CEO Says in Apology Post

"We Screwed Up," Reddit CEO Says in Apology Post

Reddit CEO Ellen Pao has apologized for the drama of recent days and pledged to take “concrete steps” to improve communication and foster a better overall experience for moderators of the hugely popular site.

“We screwed up,” Pao wrote in her statement. “Not just on July 2, but also over the past several years. We haven’t communicated well, and we have surprised moderators and the community with big changes. We have apologized and made promises to you, the moderators and the community, over many years, but time and again, we haven’t delivered on them. When you’ve had feedback or requests, we haven’t always been responsive. The mods and the community have lost trust in me and in us, the administrators of reddit.”

“Today, we acknowledge this long history of mistakes,” she added. “We are grateful for all you do for reddit, and the buck stops with me.”

Pao explained that the Reddit management team will take three “concrete” steps to do better in the future. First, she pledged that Reddit will actually improve its moderator tools, “not just promise improvements.”

Second, she said Reddit has created a new position called Moderator Advocate. This person, u/krispykrackers, will act as the liason between moderators and the Reddit management team. “We’re also going to figure out the best way for more administrators, including myself, to talk more often with the whole community,” Pao explained.

And third, Pao said Reddit plans to allow moderators to default to the old version of search “to support your existing moderation workflows.” A list of instructions for setting old search as the default are available here.

“I know these are just words, and it may be hard for you to believe us. I don’t have all the answers, and it will take time for us to deliver concrete results,” Pao said at the end of her statement. “I mean it when I say we screwed up, and we want to have a meaningful ongoing discussion. I know we’ve drifted out of touch with the community as we’ve grown and added more people, and we want to connect more. I and the team are committed to talking more often with the community, starting now.”

Last week, popular subreddit pages, such as r/Gaming, r/IAmA, r/funny, r/books, r/science, r/music, and r/history, were taken private by their moderators in a deliberate message of solidarity to the site’s management. Game-specific subreddits, such as those for Fallout 4, Destiny, and Grand Theft Auto V, were also affected by the blackout.

At the heart of the issue was the dismissal of the employee u/chooter, who was known internally as Victoria Taylor, without explanation. Among other things, she coordinated Reddit’s hugely popular Ask Me Anything (AMA) ongoing feature. As part of this series, celebrities, politicians, and other pop culture figures took questions directly from fans. Barack Obama and a man with two penises were among the participants.

  • Tiger Woods Replacement Rory McIlory Goes Down With Injury One Week Before EA's New PGA Tour Launch

Tiger Woods Replacement Rory McIlory Goes Down With Injury One Week Before EA's New PGA Tour Launch

Professional golfer Rory McIlroy, who replaced the legendary Tiger Woods as the star of EA Sports’ PGA Tour series, has gone down with an injury just one week before Rory McIlroy PGA Tour is set to launch.

McIlroy shared the news on Instagram, writing that he suffered a “total rupture” of the left ankle ligament and associated joint capsule during a pick-up soccer match with friends over the weekend.

The 26-year-old, who has won three out of golf’s four majors, says he has already started rehab and is “working hard” to get back on the course “as soon as I can.”

But his status for The Open next week at St. Andrews is in question. Experts say recovery time for such an injury depends on the severity of the rupture, which McIlroy did not specify in his Instagram post. A spokesperson told the Washington Post that there is a 10 percent chance that McIlroy will play next week.

This is no doubt a huge bummer for McIlory, who is the defending Open champion and current World No. 1 golfer. Whether or not his injury and time away from the game affects Rory McIlory PGA Tour, however, remains to be seen.

Rory McIlroy PGA Tour launches on July 14 for Xbox One and PlayStation 4, but Xbox One owners with an EA Access membership can start playing five days early.

The game was originally expected to launch in June, but was later delayed so that EA could make sure the online infrastructure will be smooth and stable at release.

  • Witcher 3 DLC Leaks Early, Dev Warns Against Downloading It

Witcher 3 DLC Leaks Early, Dev Warns Against Downloading It

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt was not supposed to get any new DLC this week, but that’s exactly what happened. This content, which online reports reveal to be a new outfit for Ciri, was released ahead of schedule, developer CD Projekt Red has confirmed.

The Polish studio now warns against downloading the DLC–Ciri’s Zerrikanian outfit–because it “wasn’t ready.” And, as with any pre-release software, it might contain issues that could hurt your experience.

Though The Witcher 3’s DLC campaign is taking this week off, CD Projekt Red plans to release at least three more free add-ons in the weeks to come.

Ciri’s new outfit will follow previously released alternate attire for Geralt, Yennefer, and Triss.

What do you think of Ciri’s new look? Let us know in the comments below.

In other Witcher 3 news, CD Projekt Red has announced a major patch for all versions of the game that will make a long list of substantial changes. You can read some of the key changes here, while the full patch notes are coming later this week.

@feijoax @witchergame This DLC became available prematurely via XBL – wasn’t ready. We advise against using it until it releases officially.

  • Dragon Age: Inquisition DLC No Longer Coming to Xbox 360 and PS3

Developer BioWare has said it will no longer support the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of Dragon Age: Inquisition with downloadable content.

The news was revealed on the official Dragon Age blog, where BioWare said “all future Dragon Age: Inquisition DLC will be available on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One only.”

To encourage players to move to the versions released for newer consoles, BioWare has also introduced the ability to export saves and move them over.

“We designed our Save Importer feature to help make the transition to a new console as easy as possible,” it explained.

A step-by-step FAQ on importing saves is available here, for those interested.

Dragon Age: Inquisition creative director Mike Laidlaw has previously indicated more story DLC is in the works.

“We’re not quite done with story content for DAI just yet,” he said on Twitter.

One character who will not feature in any future story DLC for Dragon Age: Inquisition is the Hero of Ferelden from Dragon Age: Origins.

“I’ve already said that the Hero of Ferelden will not be appearing. Sorry!” Laidlaw said “I do not feel the HOF would work well as an NPC.”

Assassin's Creed Movie Casts The Wire's Omar, Sequel Planned

The upcoming Assassin’s Creed movie continues to add top talent to its cast.

According to Variety, Michael K. Williams, who is best known for his leading roles on The Wire and Boardwalk Empire, has joined New Regency’s Assassin’s Creed movie and will play a major role.

Interestingly, the report also reveals that New Regency and Ubisoft are planning to make at least one additional Assassin’s Creed movie. Sources told the site that Williams’ character “has a major stake in the franchise” and that, for a sequel, he will have a co-starring role alongside lead actor Michael Fassbender.

Neither New Regency nor Ubisoft have confirmed Williams’ involvement with the Assassin’s Creed movie project, but Williams basically validated the news on Twitter through a series of retweets.

The Assassin’s Creed movie starts shooting in September and is expected to hit theaters in December 2016. It also stars Oscar-winning actress Marion Cotillard, and will be directed by Macbeth‘s Justin Kurzel.

It is one of more than a dozen video game movie projects currently in development. Check out GameSpot’s new image gallery to learn about the others.

  • Metal Gear Solid 5 Gameplay Demo Features Rocket-Powered Arm Missile

Konami has released a lengthy new gameplay video for Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, offering another look at its open-world stealth gameplay.

In the video, which you can watch below, Snake embarks on a mission titled “A Hero’s Way,” in which he is tasked with taking out a Spetsnaz commander.

Snake is joined by Quiet, Diamond Dogs’ designated sniper and, along with the usual sneaking, tranquillising, and Fulton-recovering, there’s a point where Snake fires his arm, which is powered by rockets, and guides it around a base before slamming it into an enemy soldier.

Fans of the Metal Gear series may remember something similar happening in Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, when Vladimir Aleksandrovich Zadornov fired his prosthetic arm at Big Boss.

Kojima previously said Konami was planning to release a video depicting a “different way of infiltration” in the upcoming open-world stealth game. Rocket-arm definitely count as different.

The game’s publisher has addressed fears about micro-transactions impacting the Metal Gear Solid V experience by creating a pay-to-win component.

“While it is true that a few microtransactions option due exists, the entire game has been carefully balanced to be fair and enjoyable with or without using these options,” Konami said.

“There’s no pay to win option. Rest assured that every single item, weapon, and mission in the game is available to all players without paying a single cent.”

The Phantom Pain launches worldwide on September 1 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. According to sources, Kojima will leave Konami when the game ships.
