What To Watch This Weekend: League of Legends, Soulcalibur VI, And Tetris

There are some pretty cool things to watch this weekend, if you’re willing to go outside your comfort zone. While League of Legends’ World competition continues, we see the competitive premier of Soulcalibur VI, as well some big tournaments for some interesting, smaller games. Enjoy!

League of Legends‘ biggest tournament enters its quarterfinals stage, wherein the top eight teams duke it out to see who makes it to semifinals. (Stream / Schedule)

This week’s big fighting game event is East Coast Throwdown, which not only has regular FGC mainstays Street Fighter V and Dragon Ball FighterZ, but is also the first major to have a post-release tournament for Soulcalibur VI. Let’s see those day-two strategies! (Streams and Schedule)

The Tetris World Championship descends on the Oregon Convention Center for the next couple days. Check out what it’s like to see people who are much better at Tetris than you play the game! (Stream)

For something a little different, check out the Killer Queen World Championship in Portland, Oregon this weekend. Curious about what Killer Queen actually is? Now’s a great time to find out! (Streams and Schedule)

Finally, we have the Brawlhalla Autumn Championship, which features some of the best competition the game has to offer in both one-on-one and two-on-two formats. (Stream and Schedule)

That’s it for this weekend! Let us know if we missed an event, or if there’s a scene you’d like us to cover, in the comments below.

  • Developer Splash Damage Ends Development On Dirty Bomb

Developer Splash Damage Ends Development On Dirty Bomb

The multiplayer PC shooter Dirty Bomb has enjoyed ups and downs. As one of the early success stories of Early Access, Dirty Bomb enjoyed a big enough player base to push it through beta into full release in August 2017. Unfortunately, the player base didn’t stick around from the game’s height and long-term support has become unfeasible.

The game was intended to act as a Games as a Service title with continued development and support. In a post on their website, developer Splash Damage explained why they can’t continue working on the game.

“After regaining publishing rights for DB nearly two years ago, we staffed up a load of developers and tried our best to deliver a Dirty Bomb experience that would be feature-rich with tons of new content, while maintaining its great gameplay feel & balance,” the post reads. “Unfortunately, despite all the added time and resources, there were some challenges we couldn’t overcome, and we were not able to make DB the success that we hoped it could be. The bottom line is that we can’t financially justify continuing to work on the game we love.”

The servers for the game are going to remain up as long as it has a meaningful player numbers still. Those who purchased the game’s All Merc DLC before January 2019 will get a refund while still retaining access to the mercenaries it comes with.

  • Weekend Warrior – This Town Ain’t Big Enough For The Both Of Us

Weekend Warrior – This Town Ain’t Big Enough For The Both Of Us

The Game Informer editors are trying to play a ton of games before Red Dead Redemption II releases next Friday. The nostalgia bug is going around, and Dark Souls: Remastered on Switch is on a lot of people’s minds. We’re all definitely still making time to create new gaming memories, though. Return of the Obra Dinn, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, Soulcalibur VI, Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, and Spider-Man also appear on this weekend’s must-play list.

Let us know what you’re doing this weekend in the comments below!

Brian Shea (@BrianPShea) – I’m continuing to push through Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, which I’m still loving. I feel bad, because I’ve been pouring all my time into Odyssey, which means I’ve neglected Forza Horizon 4. Maybe this weekend I’ll be able to carve some time out to play that and Soulcalibur VI, but I’ve also been getting the itch to start a replay of Breath of the Wild. Oh no.

Jill Grodt (@Finruin) – I need to clear my gaming plate now because Red Dead Redemption II is only one week away! So, this weekend I’m gorging myself on Kingdom Come: Deliverance’s DLC, The Amorous Adventures of Bold Sir Hans Capon, and Return of the Obra Dinn. Also, because my eyes are bigger than my stomach, I want to sample a few recently released old favorites like Luigi’s Mansion, Dark Souls, and The Room. It’s possible I’ll bite off more than I can chew.

Javy Gwaltney – I’m attending my partner’s sister’s wedding this weekend! When I’m not getting caught up in those festivities, I’ll be journeying to land of ancient lords once more with the Switch version of Dark Souls.

Suriel Vasquez (@SurielVazquez) – It’s-a me, Wario, and I’mma gonna run the Haunted Forest until I get my Horror Story auto rifle! Then I’ll run up to that jerk Siegfried and use 1AB to mix him up, then 6AB to apply some more pressure before going for a throw. Wahahahah! Mega Man 11.

Kyle Hilliard (@KyleMHilliard) – My wife and I have gotten wrapped up in Attack on Titan, randomly, so we’ll keep exploring that rabbit hole. We just finished season two last night. I would also like to keep playing Dark Souls Switch, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey on Google’s Project Stream, and also start Starlink somewhere in there. Of course, all that collapses once Red Dead Redemption II comes out, so I don’t know why I even bother.

Ben Hanson (@yozetty) – I’ll be traveling home this weekend, but I look forward to getting home and seeing my loved ones again: Black and Out. Have a good weekend!

Leo Vader (@leovader) – This weekend I will play Return of the Obra Dinn for however long it takes to beat it! I love games like that where 90% of the story happens in your head, just from figuring out how everything fits together. Many other hours will disappear thanks to Maple Story 2 which is ridiculously cute and satisfying! Then of course the customary Siege, despite the current weird bug where “5 v 0” pops up inaccurately 10 times a match. HAGS!

Jeff Cork – I’m getting over a cold (hopefully?), which gives me an excuse not to leave the house. After I’m done getting my weekly loot crates in Overwatch, I’m going to shift over to Spider-Man and see if I can’t run through the story at a reasonable clip. My oldest kid just beat it, and I can tell it’s causing him physical discomfort to not shower me with spoilers. After that, I’m going to play some Warriors Orochi 4, because I’m one of those maniacs who likes those games. So there!

JP Gemborys (@JPGemborys) – I’m gonna try to evolve my Grotle into a Torterra, listen to hip hop, and write stuff. Maybe break down and buy a Nintendo Switch because my inability to play games here in Minnesota is becoming unbearable.

Andrew Reiner (@Andrew_Reiner) – I’m working my way through the big holiday games. Assassin’s Creed Odyssey and Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 are just the tip of the iceberg. When I’m not playing, I hope to start up that scary Netflix show, Haunting of Hill House. I heard it’s making people vomit and pass out. That sounds like a great Saturday night to me!

Joe Juba (@Joejuba) – Now that I’ve had my fill of ancient Greece in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, I’m finally putting some significant time into Spider-Man. This game is up my alley in a way I was not expecting, and it just continues to amaze me at every turn. So, when I’m not taking care of my two sick dogs, I’ll be swinging from skyscrapers this weekend.

Imran Khan (@imranzomg) – Hey, true believers! This weekend, I am cleaning up the remaining trophies in Spider-Man and going to try and resist the urge to go through new game+ on a harder difficulty. As soon as I finish this, I’m going to make the tough decision whether to start Dragon Quest XI or just wait for Red Dead without a 100-hour RPG hanging around my neck. I’m also going to finish watching Haunting of Hill House but this time I won’t watch five episodes in a row right before bed. Ex-excelsior?

Jeff Marchiafava (@GIJeffM) – This weekend I hope to get more time in Call of Duty. I’ve played 10 solo matches of Blackout so far, and have finished everywhere from #87 to #2. Coincidentally my enjoyment/frustration with the game has also swung just as widely. I may also try to jump back into Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, and take some more ridiculous pictures of my shenanigans.

  • Insomniac Caves On Puddlegate, Admits Spider-Man Needs More Puddles

Insomniac Caves On Puddlegate, Admits Spider-Man Needs More Puddles

While earlier we found out that today’s Spider-Man update includes a new game+ mode and a new difficulty, it also includes some features that were kept out of the update notes. The new update includes some photo mode improvements, like the ability to access photo mode quick, to rotate stickers, and even a few new stickers themselves.

The game’s lead UI artist, Gil Doron, showed off the new change in a tweet.

We have a new patch today! Not only do we have NG+, but we added a bunch of stuff in Photo Mode, including:
    stickers
    frames
    rotation for stickers
shortcut to Photo Mode with the D-Pad…
    …and I fixed this for you 🙂 pic.twitter.com/SW7Jxrxab6

    — Gil Doron (@GilFromUI) October 19, 2018

The sticker references a controversy surrounding the release of Spider-Man that we all somehow collectively decided to call Puddlegate. In a pre-release copy leaked out early, fans noticed that there were less puddles in the final version of the game than in the E3 footage. Citing this shot as proof, people called for Insomniac to acknowledge the downgrade. Insomniac explained that they moved some stuff around and it had nothing to with performance issues. I believe at the time I decided not to write about it because it was stupid.

Now, using photo mode, you can add puddles in wherever you want. You can flood New York City in puddles. You can become the greatest Spider-Man villain of all, Puddle-Man.

  • Spider-Man New Game Plus And Ultimate Difficulty Out Now

Spider-Man New Game Plus And Ultimate Difficulty Out Now

    Funny To A Point - Spider-Man Screen

A new update has gone live for Marvel’s Spider-Man today, pushing out the much requested New Game+ and Ultimate difficulty updates. There are also two new associated trophies.

New Game+ lets you go back through the story with all the suits, powers, gadgets, and upgrades you had when you ended it. Ultimate difficulty is the hardest Spider-Man challenge yet and is a good option for those that want to play the game in a different way while doing trophy cleanup.

Speaking of trophies, both New Game+ and Ultimate are getting their own trophies added, though presumably you can combine the two together to get both at the same time.

Spider-Man’s first DLC, The Heist, releases next Tuesday on October 23. It is part one of a multi-chapter story DLC that focuses on Spider-Man and Black Cat.

  • Days Gone Delayed

    Days Gone Delayed

Bend Studio’s take on zombies and motorcycles has been delayed, Sony announced this morning. The game will now release on April 26.

The publisher took the time to explain the reasoning behind the delay as well:

We want to share a change in release date for this highly anticipated title from Bend Studio. We recently decided to move the release of Days Gone from the crowded February timeframe to April 26, 2019. While the studio is eager to see Days Gone in the hands of fans, Bend Studio will take the opportunity to further polish Days Gone.

Considering that the late January/February releases include Kingdom Hearts 3, Anthem, Metro Exodus, Resident Evil 2 Remake, it’s easy to see Sony and Bend’s reasoning.

  • Netflix Will Continue Making Marvel Shows

Netflix Will Continue Making Marvel Shows

With the recent cancellation of Marvel’s Iron Fist, one of Netflix’s original programs designed to lead into a Defenders crossover, fans have been wondering whether all the Marvel Netflix shows will eventually go away. Disney is launching its own streaming service, so the theory has been that the house of mouse pushed for cancellation to bring the series home and the same fate is inevitable for the rest. Not so, says Netflix, at least until they decide to lower the axe themselves.

When Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos was asked about the future of the superheroes currently tied to Netflix and whether they too will fade into dust, Sarandos was brief.

“Those shows are for us to cancel,” he said, “and we’re super happy with their performance so far.”

So that more or less confirms that Netflix was behind Iron Fist’s cancellation and the continued existence of Daredevil, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, and The Punisher. Still, if Disney wants the shows, they’ll probably find a way to get them back, unless Netflix signed that ironclad of a deal.

Daredevil’s third season begins tomorrow, October 19.

  • Skybound CEO Wants The Walking Dead Finale To Be Entirely Developed By Former Telltale Staff

Skybound CEO Wants The Walking Dead Finale To Be Entirely Developed By Former Telltale Staff

With Telltale having closed and laid off its staff, The Walking Dead’s incomplete final season hangs over a lot of the news for fans of the series. While Skybound confirmed they would be finishing the story out, the question of how exactly they would bring in the terminated Telltale staff to fix it was still important, and reminds people of the human cost behind their favorite games.

It did not take long for this subject to come up when Skybound CEO Ian Howe held an Ask Me Anything session on Reddit yesterday. While he did not go into specific detail about how he plans to bring in Telltale developers to finish the game, he was clear about how much of the team would be comprised of former Telltale employees.

“The plan is for it to be staffed 100% by former Telltale staff,” he answered. “The only time we’d look elsewhere is if we can’t fill a particular role from former TT people.”

Howe also added that he has been in contact with “most, if not all” of The Walking Dead team, but this is not confirmation that all of them are willing or able to return. Presumably, some degree of the team have plans that are incompatible with Skybound’s intentions to continue development.

There is no timeframe for the remainder of The Walking Dead: The Final Season, though the first two episodes are still for sale.

While the idea of going back and finishing a project I was working on sounds good, hopefully those who were laid off find a more permanent and agreeable solution than/after this. This is one of those situations where no one is really in the wrong right now, but things could definitely be way better.

  • Accounting+ Oculus Launch Trailer Reminds You Of The Wonder Of VR, Or Some Other Kind Of Wonder

When Accounting launched a few years ago, the employment-comedy virtual reality genre was still pretty nascent though large enough to have spawned a number of differently themed games already. The PlayStation VR got its hands on Accounting in 2016 and its DLC, Accounting+, the following year.

Now Accounting+ is available on Oculus and Vive stores. Part of that means that the William Pugh- and Justin Roiland-written game gets its own launch trailer with precisely those two people, which you can watch below if you need a laugh today.

Accounting+ is now available on Oculus, Vive, and PlayStation VR.

  • A Fan Has Recreated Dishonored 2's Karnaca In Planet Coaster

A Fan Has Recreated Dishonored 2's Karnaca In Planet Coaster

As strange as it may be to see the coastal city of Karnaca populated by balloon toting tourists, YouTuber Brad Hamilton has recreated the entire city from Dishonored 2 complete with banners dedicated to “her majesty, Delilah Kaldwin.” Most impressive of all, however, is the roller coaster that guides you throughout major story beats and locations in the game.

Departing from Addermire Station, the ride begins in line with a short video featuring Meagan Foster who greets you and explains the game’s story, encouraging you to embark on the ride, saying “Hurry! – You can sneak aboard the Duke’s private transport system!”

Twisting and turning, the coaster takes riders past towering clockwork soldiers and Grand Serkonan Guards who shoot at you along the way as you pass through memorable locations like the Addermire Institue, the Clockwork Mansion, and The Palace. Along the way, riders help “defeat” Delilah’s retainers, before finally dispelling the evil witch herself and sending her spirit back to the void. Throughout the video, Dishonored 2’s haunting main theme plays, which is just the icing on the cake. For the full video of Brad Hamilton’s expansive project, you check it out below.
