I don’t know what it is about battleship paintings, but I love ’em. They make me think of sitting under one in a wood-panelled room, in front of a fireplace, sipping on expensive booze and puffing on a big ol’ pipe.

The NES Was Once So Rare You Could Only Get It In Two Cities

It’s easy to forget now, given its enormous success, that the NES was once seen as a risky proposition. Coming on the heels of the great video game crash of 1983, into a market unsure if games were a fad that had already died out, the system didn’t just magically appear in stores across North America.

  • Neill Blomkamp’s Next Film Is His ‘Alien’ Reimagining

    Neill Blomkamp Alien Movie

We’re going to see that Neill Blomkamp Alien movie after all.

Details are scarce but Wednesday afternoon, the District 9 and Chappie director tweeted that his radical reimagining of the Alien universe – which was first revealed via concept art – will “officially” be his next film. Variety then confirmed the fact with 20th Century Fox and found out Ridley Scott is producing. Read more below.

UPDATE Feb. 18: Here’s the tweet in question. Variety confirmed with 20th Century Fox that a deal has been closed for Blomkamp to make an Alien movie and it’s not Prometheus 2.

Um… So I think it’s officially my next film. #alien

A photo posted by Brownsnout (@neillblomkamp) on Feb 18, 2015 at 3:55pm PST

Here’s the original story from February 10 where Blomkamp suggested the movie was all but read to get made. A fact we now know is happening:

February 10: This year kicked off with a bang when District 9 and Chappie writer/director Neill Blomkamp posted Alien concept images to Instagram. The pics featured renderings of Sigourney Weaver‘s character Ellen Ripley, the Hicks character originally played by Michael Biehn, and images of the engineers’ ship from Alien housed in a giant hangar.

There wasn’t much explanation of the images: were they for a film, or maybe a game? Had Blomkamp created them on his own, or as part of a quiet deal that hadn’t leaked outside Fox? Now the director reveals the truth about his Alien ideas — and he says that he could actually make the Alien movie heralded by the concept art. He just has to decide to do it.

Blomkamp talked to Uproxx, and the interview is surprisingly candid. The director explained that the art came out of a long-simmering desire to make an Alien movie.

Basically, what happened was, when Chappie got heavily into post-production, I could take my foot off the gas a bit. I was thinking about what I wanted to do next and I’ve been wanting to make an Alien film for like years and years.

The art came into being as the director was working on the post-process of Chappie, and he says we’ve only seen the beginning of it, teasing “I produced way more art than I put out.”

This all came about thanks to working with Sigourney Weaver on Chappie, which comes as a surprise to no one.

Speaking to Sigourney Weaver, when we were doing Chappie, she set off a bunch of thoughts in my head — I had come up with an idea that didn’t have Sigourney, it was a different idea. But I spent all of the shooting time with her, it was like, holy shit, that could actually be really interesting. When I came back to Vancouver, I had an entire year to work on Chappie. And when I wasn’t needed in the edit, I could think about Alien. So, I basically developed an entire movie and I did all of this artwork as well.

Blomkamp says he’s not giving up on the idea, and that Fox isn’t the roadblock to making it happen. According to him, it’s his own attitude about doing a franchise movie that keeps things at the theoretical stage. (“Sometimes Hollywood just sort of gets to me.”) If he gets his head around making it, Blomkamp says it’s a go.

    Seriously, he’s certain about this:

Me. I’m the problem. Fox, they would make it. Like, tomorrow. They would make it.

As a refresher, here’s the art.

  • New Line Will Make a New ‘Shaft’ Movie

    new Shaft movie

Shaft was born in the early ’70s, when Richard Roundtree played the seductive and violent private detective John Shaft for director Gordon Parks. The story continued in two sequels and a short TV series, then was picked up years later, in 2000, when Samuel L. Jackson played John Shaft’s nephew, with the character at the center of a film directed by John Singleton. Now New Line wants to make a new Shaft movie — we just don’t know what this one will look like.

The Wrap reports on the rights landing at New Line, saying that producer John Davis (Predator) will produce. There’s little info available about the new film, as it is just beginning development. There’s no writer to announce, much less a director or star.

We don’t even know if this will continue the family lineage of the characters, or simply reboot the character entirely. The report says that Shaft will be recast, so it’ll be a new version of the character at least based on that criteria.

And while we don’t know anything about plot, one guess for the story’s jumping-off point is that Shaft might address the increasingly tense relationships between black communities and cops. The previous films have featured corrupt cops, but attacking concepts of institutionalized corruption and racism would be an escalation for Shaft. Turning Shaft into a hero who fights for his community could be a way to make this movie relevant and even proactive, as long as the producers prevent the film from seeming crassly exploitative at the same time.

  • Crazy Fan Theory: Homer Simpson Has Been in a Coma for 20 Years

    simpsons

Simpsons executive producer Al Jean says this isn’t true. He would know, but no matter. A Reddit user has come up with a wild theory that attempts to explain why The Simpsons have never aged in 20-plus years. And even if it’s false, it’s an interesting, well-researched attempt to put a bow on a series that’s never been about wrapping things up.

Basically the idea is that Homer has been in a coma for twenty years. Read more details on this Simpsons fan theory below.

Here’s the Reddit Thread with the full Simpsons fan theory. I’m just going to bullet-point a few quotes.

    • “October 1992: Homer The Heretic airs and ends with Homer talking to God.” Mentions Homer will die in six months.
    • “April 1993 (SIX MONTHS LATER): So It’s Come To This: A Simpsons Clip Show airs and involves Bart’s April Fools prank inadvertently putting Homer into the hospital, where he is then crushed by a vending machine and put in a coma.” Homer wakes up at the end but the theory purposes this is where the coma begins.
    • If Homer is in a coma, it explains why the characters have never aged.
    • Some of the plots before April 1993 were much simpler and realistic (Bart cheats on an IQ test, Homer tries to give up drinking) than after (Homer goes into outer space, Mr. Burns captures the Loch Ness Monster).
    • How does Homer know about new pop culture references and characters? He overhears people talking in his hospital room.

If you head to the Reddit link, there are more examples, details and images to try and back up this theory too.

Again, The Simpsons has never been about telling a huge, cohesive story. It’s episodic. Every episode tells a single story that you can just jump into without seeing anything before it. Nothing that happens ever carries over into another episode as if the slate is wiped clean every week. Nevertheless, imagine when The Simpsons does end that they pull a Newhart on us (a famous instance of the whole series being a dream)? It would be a hilarious goodbye. Let’s just hope that never happens.

Even though we know it’s not true, what do you think about this Simpsons fan theory?
