Star Trek: Discovery Boldly Going Where No Series Has Before With New Lead Character

From James T. Kirk to Jean-Luc Picard, Star Trek has a strong tradition of iconic starship captains as its lead character. However, it has been revealed that not only will the upcoming show Star Trek: Discovery focus on a lieutenant, the lead role will be female .

Showrunner Bryan Fuller discussed his decision to focus upon a lower-ranking crew member of the Starship Discovery at the Television Critics Association conference in LA. “The story that’s fascinating for me now is not from the captain’s perspective,” he said, via Polygon. “We’ve seen six series from the captain’s point of view and we wanted to do something different.”

Fuller went on to explain that one of the most important things for him when casting was diversity, hence the decision to have a female lead. “Star Trek started with a wonderful diversity in its cast,” he said. “Infinite diversity in infinite combinations, as Spock would say. We are absolutely continuing that tradition. We’ll probably have some more aliens than usual in our cast, too.”

The last show to feature a female lead was Star Trek: Voyager, which starred Kate Mulgrew as Captain Kathryn Janeway.

Last week it was revealed that Star Trek: Discovery will be set before the events of the original ’60s series. Fuller was asked whether this meant that younger versions of some classic characters might make an appearance in the new show. “Maybe. It could happen,” he said. “It’s in the realm of possibilities.”

Star Trek: Discovery is to premiere in January 2017, with production beginning this fall in Toronto. Last month it was reported that Netflix had picked up the show for streaming outside of the US and Canada. It can be seen in 188 territories within 24 hours of every new episode premiering in the US.

American viewers will able to watch the first episode on the CBS network channel, with all subsequent episodes screening initially on the company’s All Access digital subscription service. In Canada, it will be broadcast on the streaming channel CraveTV.

Disclosure: CBS is GameSpot’s parent company.

Final Fantasy XI Was So Challenging, It Brought People Together

Hardship is a social glue, especially in games. Shared victories and mutual defeat, confusion, frustration— these are bonding mechanisms that transcend the IRL-URL barrier. In MMORPGs, in which community is a main draw, the difference between a challenging game and an easy game can also mean the difference between a strong and weak community. I experienced this when I migrated from Final Fantasy XI to Final Fantasy XIV, two games that are on opposite ends of the inscrutability spectrum.

  • One More Quick Trailer for Ron Howard's 'Inferno' with Tom Hanks

One More Quick Trailer for Ron Howard's 'Inferno' with Tom Hanks

    Inferno Trailer

“Only he can unlock the mystery. Only he can stop the unthinkable.” Another new fast-paced trailer has debuted online for Ron Howard’s adaptation of the other Dan Brown novel, Inferno, once again starring Tom Hanks as symbologist Robert Langdon. We’ve already seen a couple of different trailers for this movie already, and this new one tries to hype up the excitement of the story even more. The cast includes Felicity Jones as Dr. Sienna Brooks, Langdon’s beautiful sidekick in this one, plus Ben Foster, Irrfan Khan, Omar Sy, Sidse Babett Knudsen, Ana Ularu, and Ida Darvish. As much as I have enjoyed reading the novels, this particular big screen version of Langdon’s history-inspired, globe-trotting, solve-the-mystery thriller doesn’t seem to be that exciting. Here’s to hoping it’s much better than it looks, only time will tell. ›››

  • Official Trailer for Award-Winning Peru Doc 'When Two Worlds Collide'

    When Two Worlds Collide Doc

“This must end.” First Run Features has debuted an official trailer for a powerful environmental activism documentary called When Two Worlds Collide, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival this year and won a Special Jury Prize for Best Debut Feature. The doc is about the conflict between the Peruvian government and Peruvian activists trying to save the Amazon rainforest in Peru. The jury at Sundance gave the film an award stating that “this film impresses us because of the tenacity of the filmmakers in staying with the story of many years. This film was beautiful, raw and had incredible tension.” From the trailer, you can get a glimpse at some of the remarkable footage they have of the violent fight between the politicians and the people. This looks like investigative doc filmmaking at its finest, and most powerful. Watch below. ›››

    The Giant's Dream Doc

Warner Bros is going all-out with the release of the Signature Edition of The Iron Giant on Blu-ray this fall. One of the Special Features included is this documentary – called The Giant’s Dream, a comprehensive look at the Making of Brad Bird’s animated classic The Iron Giant, which first hit theaters in 1999. This is directed by Anthony Giacchino, brother of composer Michael Giacchino, who has been making docs for years. It seems like much more than some 20 minute extra, diving deep into the production and process of creating this beloved animated film. They have tons of behind-the-scenes footage of Brad Bird riling up everyone trying to pull off something unique. But it ends on such an ominous note – “what could go wrong?” ›››

  • First Trailer for Alison Maclean's 'The Rehearsal' Premiering at TIFF

    The Rehearsal Trailer

“So what happens here? And what can you do to minimize the damage?” The first trailer has arrived for a film playing at this year’s Toronto Film Festival (TIFF) called The Rehearsal, from Canadian director Alison Maclean. It’s a complex drama about a first-year acting student who “mines his girlfriend’s family scandal as material for the end-of-year show at drama school.” Yeah, that sounds a bit crazy, but this looks damn good. James Rolleston stars, along with Ella Edward, Alice Englert, Kerry Fox and Michelle Ny. I am expecting some exceptional performances from a film about acting, and from what I can tell, there will be plenty. The song featured in this is “Fragile” (MCHNCL Remix) by Maya Payne & Kabyn Walley. See below. ›››
