So you’ve found the love of your life. The two of you somehow tolerate one another enough that you’ve decided to share a home. Now you’ve got a problem: How do you convince them to let you get away with all those eight-hour binges on The Witcher 3?
Released yesterday via Steam’s Early Access program, Giga Wrecker is a messy little puzzle platforming game with messy dialogue, questionable physics and some strange design decisions. Other than all that, it shows promise.
Uncork’d Entertainment has released an official trailer for the documentary Doomed!: The Untold Story of Roger Corman’s The Fantastic Four, directed by Marty Langford, which is actually getting released on VOD + DVD later this year. As the title explains, the film examines the curious case of the 1994 version of The Fantastic Four, which was made by Roger Corman and distributed by New Horizons, but it was never actually released. The film has since ended up online as a bootleg, but this doc goes back and tells the complete story of how it all fell apart. “The average moviegoer doesn’t know that, ten years before releasing Tim Story’s version, Roger Corman was asked to produce a Fantastic Four movie. Unbeknownst to cast and crew, the film was never going to be released though – and for a variety of reasons.” Find out why in the film. ›››
“The past… the present… the future… A journey from the birth of the stars through the origin of humanity.” Whoa. I can’t wait for this, it looks so enchanting. Empire has released a trailer for the alternate full-length version of Terrence Malick’s long-awaited documentary Voyage of Time. This version is called Voyage of Time: Life’s Journey, a 90-minute feature extended from the separate Voyage of Time: The IMAX Experience which runs 45 minutes (see the trailer for that one) and is narrated by Brad Pitt. This version is narrated by Cate Blanchett, who you can hear in this trailer, and features all of the same footage with even more shots of the stars forming, and Earth being created, and life starting and evolving over millions of years of time. The score is by Simon Franglen & Hanan Townshend. You need to see this for yourself. ›››
“No party, alright!” Oscilloscope has debuted a trailer for the upcoming release of an Australian coming-of-age indie comedy called Girl Asleep, the filmmaking debut of theater director Rosemary Myers. The film stars Bethany Whitmore as Greta Driscoll, a girl about to turn fifteen whose whole life is thrown into disarray when her parents invite the whole school to her surprise birthday party. It has been described as “equal measures Wes Anderson and Lewis Carroll“, which sounds quite appealing, and an “enchanting journey into the absurd – and sometimes scary – depths of the teenage mind.” The cast includes Harrison Feldman, Matthew Whittet, Amber McMahon, Eamon Farren and others. This looks so weird and so wacky and definitely Wes Anderson-inspired, but it seems like it will be fun to watch. Have a look below. ›››
“We are at war – and you are the front-line troops in this war.” Vanish Films has released an official trailer for the “chilling” documentary Do Not Resist, a powerful look at the current state of policing in America. Directed by cinematographer Craig Atkinson, this doc begins on the streets of Ferguson, Missouri and progresses through a number of different situations and key moments in history. It also includes views from both sides of the battle – the public and the police – with a SWAT ride-along and police training seminar profiled. This is obviously a very major topic in America at this time in history, and it’s fascinating to see this kind of documentary arriving right in the thick of it, when there is no real solution to any problems just yet. This is a fantastic trailer – it let’s all the footage speak for itself without trying to explain too much else. ›››
Xbox One owners now have a new, more official way to use background music on the console. Microsoft’s Groove Music app has been updated to version 3.6.2395, which finally allows you to use it to listen to music while playing games.
The app can be snapped, too, so you can bring up the menu screen without leaving a game or other app you have open. Take a look at the video below from Windows Central to see how background music with Groove works on Xbox One.
If Groove Music doesn’t automatically update to the newest version, you can force the update by following the instructions below, provided by Windows Central.
Go to your Games & Apps section, located at the top right of the main dashboard screen.
Select the apps tab.
Select Groove with the view key on your controller, and hit update.
Microsoft operates Groove Music, a music-streaming service that is available for Xbox consoles, as well as PC and mobile devices. It boasts a library of more than 40 million tracks. You can listen for free (with ads) or buy a Groove Music Pass for $10/month to kill the ads and unlock more features.
Background music is already available on the competing PlayStation 4 by way of PlayStation Music, which is made in partnership between Sony and Spotify.
Though upcoming PC-exclusive arena shooter Quake Champions retains many of the series’ defining aspects–including hyper-fast movement speeds, open battle arenas littered with guns, and skill-based techniques like rocket-jumping–it also adds unique characters with their own distinct abilities, a first for the franchise.
Quake Champions project lead Tim Willits has downplayed the overall significance of the Champions–calling them “an additive thing” during a recent interview with GameSpot–but many fans have expressed concern over this new feature nonetheless, labeling Quake Champions a “hero shooter” in the same vein as games like Overwatch.
When asked if the studio would consider including an option that would allow players to turn off Champions’ unique abilities and compete using mechanically identical characters a la classic Quake, Willits responded: “Yeah, in custom game mode.”
“We want to make sure we give people what they want,” said Willits. “If you create custom game mode, you should be able to set the game up the way you want. If you need to turn off Champions, we’ll let you turn off Champions. That won’t be a problem.”
Though Quake Champions’ competitive modes will still utilize the titular heroes’ full ability sets, custom matches will at least provide Quake purists a means to enjoy the game on their own terms. But Willits still thinks everyone should give the Champions a shot.
“I really do believe it adds to the experience, because you don’t fundamentally change the way you play based on the Champion you have,” said Willits. “You still run and shoot and pick up all the weapons. But the subtle variations add that level of strategy and depth that I think is the next step we need to take.”
Quake Champions was announced during Bethesda’s E3 2016 briefing in June. The first gameplay footage was released during Bethesda’s recent QuakeCon event in Texas (watch it above), containing the kind of fast-paced gameplay fans may be familiar with from past entries in the series.
