X-Men Spinoff Movie Gambit Might Lose Another Director–Report

While the X-Men franchise continues from strength-to-strength, with Deadpool and X-Men: Apocalypse both major box office hits and Wolverine 3 currently in production, there one upcoming movie in that universe that isn’t having quite as much luck. Gambit has already suffered from directors leaving and release dates disappearing, and it has now been reported that the status of current director Doug Liman is uncertain.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Liman is close to signing on to direct the futuristic Young Adult thriller Chaos Walking, replacing Robert Zemeckis. THR reports that production is scheduled to begin in the Fall, which is when Gambit is set to shoot. While Liman is still officially attached to Gambit, involvement with Chaos Walking would obviously mean the superhero movie either moving back again, or another director having to be found.

Gambit was originally scheduled for a release in October this year, with Rise of the Planet of the Apes‘ Rupert Wyatt as director. He left the film in September 2015, citing citing scheduling conflicts. However, a story in Deadline at the time suggested that there had been ongoing disagreements over both the script and budget.

Even though Liman was announced as director late last year, the film is yet to be given another release date. Production was due to start in the spring, before moving back to the end of 2016, to allow time for further rewrites on the film.

Gambit will star Channing Tatum as the card-throwing superhero of the title, alongside Spectre‘s Léa Seydoux. Like Deadpool, Gambit is a character spun off from the X-Men, first appearing in a 1990 issue of The Uncanny X-Men. He appeared briefly in 2009’s critically panned X-Men Origins: Wolverine, portrayed by Taylor Kitsch.
