Sega Master System

The Sega Master System was Sega's answer to Nintendo's 8-bit NES.  Technically superior, the system never gained much in the way of a large user base. It didn't have enough third party game developers like Nintendo had.   The Sega Master System did have quite a few games during its short life, however, such as the renowned RPG Phantasy Star and a few of the Alex Kid Series games.

The system wars are perennial. Don't believe us? Then
you must not have been around for the great Nintendo vs.
Sega Master System debate of the late '80s. Sega's system
could handle more sprites and colors, but Nintendo had
Mario and Zelda. One secret weapon in Sega's arsenal was
the secret game built directly into their console. It was a
dumb little game where you had to guide a snail through a
maze within a given period of time. But it was free, and
Nintendo didn't have it. Small consolation for the Sega
faithful left high and dry by their system's demise.

Recently, just for fun, I purchased an old NES system and began collecting games. Unfortunately, I'm still on the hunt for
an original tetris, but that's what makes it fun. A few weeks ago, though, I was in the basement and I found the Sega
Master System, and with a little more searching, I was able to find a controller, and a mess of old hook-up wires. The Sega
Master System wires weren't there, but I used a few nintendo and Sega Genesis hook-ups to get the system started, and it
now it works like magic! I came to here to find out the code for the maze game, as I forgot it years ago. I didn't realize
that there were two models of this system created. Apparently, I have the first. But I wanted to know if there are any
distinguishing features on each model so I can tell the difference?

I was playing with my SMS when I was 12, and I found it back 2 months ago. 15 years later I'm still having fun.

The master system is the only system that I know that you can use a pair of 3D glasses to play games!  The 3D effect is
very good, even for this 21st century!
Never I will sell those glasses.  Never!

For anyone with a master system, but messed up controllers, use sega genesis controllers, they work ust as well, (but don't
expect the start button to work on the controller, you still have to press the pause button on the console to pause the
game).

Hi Sega Master System,
I am an adult and have enjoyed your games on the Master system since the 1980's. I would
like to know if you have additional controllers available for the Sega Master System as well
as the game FANTASY MAZE.
I plan to purchase most of the games listed above and hope that you also have said game
not listed. Thanks Sega. I Love your
MASTER SYSTEM. Of course my son husband enjoy them as well.
Please feel free to email me at marshawhitaker3@att.net anytime regarding you Master
System.

Just FYI, for those SMS fans and useres out there that are still unaware of this "Snail Maze" game:
to play it, just keep pressed the buttons 1 and 2, and the control pad up, while turning the SEGA
Master System console WITHOUT A CART IN IT. A little while after the SEGA on-screen logo
appears, the whole screen will scroll left and the maze will appear. Control the snail with the pad.

Please note: this built-in game was available ONLY for the SEGA Master System Console First
Model. The Second Model (as you may know), was with the more playable Alex Kidd in Miracle
World inside.

The First Model, without cartridge and NO CONTROL PAD SEQUENCES, also provides the
games "Hang On/Safari Hunt", but it seems to be in latter models only.

As a curious note, and speaking about emulators, it seems that the only SMS emulator that is
realistic enough even to include the Snail Maze built-in game in it is MEKA. You can download
it anywhere you like. Of course, to bring Snail Maze game up in MEKA emulator, you need to
make the button_1+button_2+pad_up (er... "keyboard_up") sequence, just like the real thing... :o)

If you play fantasy zone 2 for 30 seconds on the master system and remove it from the console
without turning off the power, and then insert space harrier into the console(power still on) push
reset, space harrier character becomes a fully packed space jet with flight controls!!! Trust me it works!!!!

I have a lot of systems. im a begining collecter and have a very old Odyssey 500. i also have a sega
geneisis, sega dreamcast, sony playstation, and an N64. in my lifetime the major war has been between
n64 and psx. i think psx is the altime best system b/c of its gameplay. it doesnt have the best grafics
but it has a very wide selection of games and the are fairly cheap compared to n64s 50 to 60 bucks a
game. hopefully this will bring some insite to u. ttyl
