Maybe it's the stylization, the personality, the
humor that makes the game unique. Really,
the mindless shooting has been done so
many times before, but injecting surreal
concepts certainly adds a whole lot to the
game. The World's Smallest Nuclear
Explosion, now there's a unique power-up, a
funny one, too.
But the level design is something that
separates itself from the first-person shooters. Each has been laid out
in a
straightforward, point-a-to-b design that eliminates the trademark "where
the
heck is that exit" syndrome, an annoying factor in corridor games that
leaves
the gamer searching every nook and cranny in the game.
Many levels require platform hopping to reach certain heights. Due to a
possible oversight, unfortunately, the fact that the character doesn't
cast a
shadow when he's in the air makes the controls a little too dependent on
guesswork. And while the "zoom into the target" scoping feature is really
slick, using it leaves the character open to attacks.
MDK originally hit the PC a few months back, and the PlayStation version
is
an excellent conversion. Truthfully, we didn't think to much of the title
when
shown in early form, but the developers really pushed to get this title
on par
with the gorgeous PC version. Tomb Raider 2 will most likely steal the
game's
thunder when its released, so give MDK a go before it gets lost on the
shelves.
